We just had a blast at the Ice House for a skating party in Hackensack. There is another rink in Wayne, and Fritz Deitl in Westwood. Westwood is older and the least expensive, Wayne and Hackensack are similiarly priced but Wayne is a bit difficult to get to from the highway. Hackensack also offers a discounted rate for adults and siblings of kids invited to the party. Take a look. We also considered a bowling party but my dd loves skating! Good luck and have FUN!

I don't live in your area but we're planning a zoo birthday party for our soon to be 5 year old. If your child likes animals that may be an option.

I am not from your area obviously, but my daughter just turned 5 at the end of January. She chose to have a bowling party... and LOVED it! Everyone loved it.. we had guests of all ages ranging from 1.5 yrs clear up to my 78 yr old grandpa! For some it was their first time bowling and they were hesitant, but jumped right in. Most bowling alleys offer birthday packages. We had my DD's party at 2 p.m. so the Alley actually worked out a special package for us, that did not include the pizza's that were included w/ their "packages". It can get a little pricey.... but it was her 5th birthday! We spent approximately $225 for a party of 25 people.... thats including 2 games of bowling for all guests (including shoes), a bowling themed cake (which I made... but I decorate cakes as a hobby), drinks, plates, napkins, forks, invitations, and little bowling pin souveniers that I found online & had personalized.

My son's 5th birthday was a party at Van Saun park (but he has an October birthday). I've been to a lot of places however in the area for parties. My son had his 6th and 7th birthday at Parkway Lanes in Elmwood Park which was very easy. I've also been to all of the following: Funtime Junction in Fairfield, Kidz Kingdom in Northvale, the Children's Museum in Paramus, Little Gym in Hasbrook Heights, Kids U in Paramus, Extreme Parties in River Edge, and Build a Bear in Paramus Park mall.

I second Kids U. I had my sons 5th bithday there and all the kids loved it. They get to play on the playquad, then they do organized activities in the gym, then they have pizza and cake. They even let me bring a pinata.

What about a kid's gym, Build a Bear, or taking a friend to a movie?
