5 Month Old with Bad Gas

I have a 5 month old boy who is breastfed. We went on vacation this past week and his gas is worse than normal. He woke up every night screaming and would scream 2 hours during the day. I thought he was sick and took him to urgent care twice. He was perfectly fine. I then figured out it was his tummy that was hurting him. I gave him a glycerin suppository and he was better for about a day and a half. What else could I do for his poor tummy? I have not changed my diet any since he was born so I can't think of anything else to cut out. I already don't eat dairy and/or caffeine. Anyway, has anything worked for anyone else? I am back home now and he probably screamed more last night than he slept. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

Does he completely finish his feedings on each breast? Sometimes the gas is from a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance. Does he have green frothy stools? That could be an indication of the imbalance. I had this problem with my daughter, but that was earlier on around 1-2 months. Have you ruled out reflux? Well, hope this was helpful and hope that he feels better.

Mylicon drops on an as needed basis - they can be given every two hours safely. Gripewater with every feeding - you can give it to him with a dropper. FloraBaby, which is a powdered digestive bacteria for babies that they can suck off of a pacifier or your finger once a day. And as soon as he will eat solids, yogurt at least once a day.
My daughter was breastfed and had terrible gas as well and these are the things that worked for us. The gripewater and FloraBaby are natural products that treat the causes not just relieve the symptom like mylicon drops - but mylicon drops are sometimes necessary for immediate relief. We also used abdominal massage before bedtime, a heating pad on the lowest setting under the mattress pad and sheet to keep the abdominal muscles relaxed (she was a tummy sleeper so if yours is not or you are not comfortable with it because of the risk of SIDS, don't try it), and intermittent leg pumping exercises during the day to relieve the discomfort. When she go told enough to start eating solids, we fed her (and still do - she is 11 mos old now) yogurt every morning and night to help with her digestion and weaned her off of the gripewater. We still do FloraBaby, and mylicon only every great once in a while.
All of this took about a week to get under control so be patient - there is an end in sight! Good luck to you and feel free to message me if you have any other questions.

My son had bad gas also...and I cut everything I was supposed to out of my diet. The only thing that helped was Hyland's Colic tablets and then laying him on his back and pumping his legs up and down toward his chest until he felt better. Eventually he out grew it at about 8 months old. Hope that helps.

My twins had horrible gas pains also. I would give them a dose of Mylecon Drops everyday before they ate. It worked wonders. Also I would lay them facing away from me across my knees so that I was putting pressure on their tummies to relieve some of the gas. Hope that helps out. Good Luck

In addition to dairy and caffeine, you could eliminate peanuts, soy and gassy vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, onions, garlic, eggplant). It's not fun, but it helped my baby. Everything gave her gas, but she seemed to grow out of it by 4 1/2 months. Good luck.

My daughter had lots of gas problems, partly because of my diet and partly due to genetics I believe. There are several things that you can do to help him and, used in combination, I bet he and you will feel some relief. First of all, reflect on any changes to your diet including an increase in gas-producing foods like broccoli, cabbage or beans. You may wish to cut back on these for awhile to see if it helps him. You can also give him a gas medicine called simethicone. It comes in baby doses by companies like Little Tummies or Gas-x. It's very gentle yet highly effective. If you would prefer to go more homeopathic you could try gripe water which is a blend of ginger and anise extract that helps soothe the tummy. It's not usually as effective as the simethicone though. Finally, you can also try manually helping him move the gas through his body by laying him on his back and moving his legs in a bicycle motion for a few minutes. Or gently stroke his belly from the base of his ribcage to his pubis with your palms. You can also gently rub his belly in the shape of an L: lay him on his back, start at the top left of his belly (your left) and cross to the top right and then run your fingers down to the bottom right. This may sound strange but I learned it in a baby massage course and it seems to help. Good luck!

One of my boys would become very gassy (and stinky) if I ate broccoli or chicken. You can imagine our evening when BOTH were served at dinner! LOL Keep a diary for awhile like I did until you figure out what's affecting him.

Also try Mylicon, it worked well for me. Another thought is if maybe you ate some different stuff on vacation, ice cream, alchol, spicy food maybe it might take a while for that to get out of his system if that is the case. Good luck and this too shall pass. :)

Hi M.!
My son had the same trouble 18 years ago and I did two things to help him though it. I gave him baby Mylanta type medicine (can't remember the name. Just go to the Mylanta/Pepto Bismal area of the store to fond it.), but I think the best was the glycerin baby suppositorie. I was told that often a baby's phinxter (sp?)musclers work as a pair and don't always open properly. When I gave him a suppository, it opened up both muxcles and everything cam out quickly which settled his stomach. Sounds like you had some success with them. Hope this helps!
