My 4year old has had 4 ear infections since November, she just started school this year and has never had an ear infection until this year. Well everytime she gets on antibiotics she starts getting better then about a week or two it starts all over again. Runny nose cough fever and ear pain the doctor says every time it's an ear infection. Well this time around she's been on her antibiotic now for 8 days and she still has a fever it went away the first couple days but then came back it's not to high it's sitting around 99.8/100.0 but I find it strange to still have a fever this late into the antibiotic. She's switched antibiotics the past three ear infections she's been given different ones. Tonight though is a little strange she's sleeping and keeps coughing every couple minutes and right after she coughs she is making this gulping noise like a continuous gulp then after like 30 seconds stops and does it again after she coughs. I propped her head up and gave her water that has seemed to help so what is this? Post nasal drip? Idk i just feel bad for my baby girl, thanks for your time

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for all your advice and kind words. I'm calling her doctor in the morning and I'm going to ask to be referred to an ENT. I hate seeing her so sick today she has diarrhea and the slight fever still. Pour kid. I'll update soon! 😊💗

Have them swab and test her for Pseudomonas. It's a completely different sort of bug.

Other than that try giving her half a dose of real Sudafed a couple of times per day. It thins the goo so it can drain down the Eustachian tubes easier.

Go see an ENT/ORL doc. A pediatrician is okay but if it's lingering then you need to go to the right doc. I'd also say tubes might be a necessity. Soon.

Ear infections can be bacterial or viral. Normally, if an antibiotic isn't working, it's likely viral and has to run it's course. Now that said, I think there is something else going on with your child. The cough says it's more than just ears. If you can see an ENT, please do so.

Did she have a vaccine recently? Could also be whooping cough.

If she's just started school she'll probably be coming down with everything going around for a couple years before it settles down to just one or two colds per year.
The flu has been brutal this year.
Many doctors wold not consider 99/100 to be a fever - our doctor didn't want a call unless it was over 103.
With colds when they are this little listen for croup (a barky kind of cough) and get her into a steamy bathroom to help relieve it.
Use a humidifier in her room at night.
She might have to have ear tubes to help keep her ears draining.
Some kids do better after having tonsils and adenoids removed.

My daughter had chronic sinusitis in 3rd grade. She missed over 30 days of school. We took her to an allergist. No allergies. Then they ran blood work to see if she had immunity issues. To her doctors surprise she did. They gave her the pneumococcal vaccine and she rarely gets sinus infections any more.

That does sound like post nasal drip. My kids get it when sick or after a cold. Our doctor gave us meds to dry it up. You could ask about that if it goes on, because if she's not sleeping it will be hard to for to get better.

I would check with ENT where she's had 4 ear infections. We messed about with antibiotics forever with one of ours, and same thing - they kept trying different ones, we would go on them longer, etc. In the end, my son had tubes put in and life just got much easier.

I'm sorry you and your daughter going through this. It's really hard. My son used to have it when he was little, its almost every time he got cold, he gets ear infection . I reserched a lot and found out , they ( pediatrician ) quit giving antibiotic unless it is really bad deal or your tiny ones infection learn to deal with it and eventually meds quit working. Made sense to me so I quit giving it .And actually he got better , whole a lot. I'm not saying you should do same but maybe consider less strong meds for little one. It might help . Our body is pretty strong! I hope she grows out like mine did!
