How long has it been since the immunizations? Maybe she just doesn't feel like it still. If it hasn't been very long, give her a little more time!
My 4 month old niece started to verbalize at 3 to 3 1/2 months old. We were very excited. At four months she had another set of immunization shots. She had a fever and was very fussy for a couple of days. Then she stopped verbalizing. It seems she mumbles rather than the clear sounds she was making. I brought this to the baby's grandmother's attention and she called the 24 hour help line but they didn't giver her much info. She will contact the doctor on Monday. Does any one have any idea of what may have caused her to stop verbalizing?
Thanks to everyone for the information they sent. My sister is taking the baby to the doctor tomorrow. The good news is that she started to verbalize again this morning. It's not as clear or as loud as it was previously but she seems to be getting back to her "old" self. She has been turning over on her back and moving up on her knees for a couple of weeks. She has discovered her feet, hands, hair, face, and mouth. Thanks again for the info and references to books, etc.

Taking the vaccine out of the equation for a moment:
It is SUPER common for babies to switch "areas" that they're working on developmentally. AKA they'll be working on speech stuff, and then drop it entirely while working on large or fine motor skills. Or they'll be doing sensory stuff (licking and rubbing and squeezing and grabbing everything from fingers/ hair/ carpet/ the dog/ their bottle/ sliding glass doors/ everything they can get their hands on or face smooshed into... and then drop it for visual (like picture books, or faces), or auditory (sounds, making them and listening to them) or _________, or __________, etc.
What happens is that they're working on "a". Then they drop it and work on "b". Then they add the two together and work on "a" + "b". Sometimes they keep AB around while working on "c", or they'll drop b and work on "a" + "c"
Has she started sitting up or rolling over recently? (Large Motor) Or is she being given solids like rice cereal? (Fine Motor, tongue / lips/ jaw/ throat). Check out the developmental milstone list for ages 3mo - 9mo.
If she's hitting new milestones, or combining 2 or more old milestones (& I'll bet you $20 she is)... then what she's doing is perfectly normal, healthy, and needed. She'll come back to verbalizing. She's just doing it differently right now.
A lot of people think babies develop on these straight lines... but they don't. They skip and hop all over the place in something that looks more like stairs... or lilly pads. And they backtrack ALL the time. It's sort of like how most of us don't cook dinner while reading a book and watching TV and shaving our legs. Instead we focus on one area, move on, come back to an area that needs more work, move on.
One of the problems with gifted kids in general, and profoundly gifted kids in particular, is that they frequently hyperfocus on one area... leaving the rest in sorry condition (it's call asynchronistic development). We WANT the leapfrogging, stair climbing, and skipping about. OTW we end up with asynchronistic development. Ex) you end up with the toddler who can read but can't walk a straight line or feed themselves and chokes all the time and can't interact with peers. It's like only strengthening the muscles on the left side of your body.
So while there MIGHT be a problem, 1 will get you 20 she's just doing what is normal/natural/healthy.
Hi L.,
You will receive many opinions here on this question. I am not necessarily against the theory of vaccinations but I have personally seen reactions to vaccines similar to what you are describing. I chose not to vaccinate because of experiences I have had as well. There are many different ingredients that are included in preserving vaccines now that I believe are not necessary. Vaccines used to be preserved by refrigeration and now are preserved by synthetic chemicals which I know are not to be put in the human body. (Fro example, everybody knows that MSG causes brain damage but it is still included in some vaccines.) Research the ingredients of the particular vaccine and see what is in it. I advise any Mom to do that prior to innoculations. The disease itself (whether in the vaccine or contracted) is sometimes not as dangerous as the solution it is put into.
People will tell you that there is no documentation that vaccines cause damage. HOWEVER, there is NO documented proof that vaccines are not dangerous. Percentages don't matter when it is your child. Each parent has to make a determination with what they have been given. If vaccines were manufactured the way they were 50 years ago, I might have a different opinion.
Hope this helps!

If it were me I wouldn't do any more vaccines until this question was answered satisfactorily in my mind.
I'm not anti-vaccine - but I do believe some children are more vulnerable to side effects from them. That's just my non-medical opinion.
You may want to check some books out from the library. I loved a book by Dr. Stephanie Cave called "What your Doctor May Not Tell You about Vaccines" (think that's the title) as well as a "Healing the New Childhood Epidemics . . . " by Kenneth Bock, MD and Cameron Stauth.
Good luck to this sweet baby!
Yes, she is developing! My son was rolling over stomach to back and back to stomach at 7 weeks. He then stopped around 12 weeks and didn't start again until around 20. Development always goes backwards before it jumps forwards. Your niece is making new pathways in her brain. Her vocalizations are now being internalized.
I will echo what Mimi said. I choose not to vaccinate as well. If your niece did have a vaccine reaction. Then it would be wise before immunizing to have her blood levels titrated to see where her immune system is. She easily could be allergic or sensitive to anything in that particular vaccine.
The National Vaccine Information Center in Virginia is a great place to get clear information on vaccines.
Has she ever had an allergic reaction to a shot? I would take her to ER asap! Or call Doc after hours... You dont wanna wait to long in case she is having an allergic reaction! It could end up being Nothing but better to be safe than sorry. I am very cautious and study the vaccines that they give my children. I do agree they put harmful additives in the vaccinations. But You personally have to weight the Pros and Cons! I vaccinate my children but I also have concerns on the Additives they add to our childrens Vaccinations!
First off, I hope that you won't connect the immunization shots with the situation now. I would suggest that aside from the regular pediatrician that ou go to, you may also wish to have your baby checked by a developmental pediatrician so as to have a better profile of her developmental status and baselines.
This is so weird, I actually had a similar experience with my son when he was around 16 months...before his shot he was articulating very clearly, and then he started mumbling...it was so odd and I asked questions but never got a clear answer...everyone kept pointing me to developmental explanations, and eventually he did start speaking again and now speaks very well (he's 2 1/2 now). But it still nags at me so I'm interested in seeing responses to this. Also, which immunizations did she get? My son was delayed in some of his, so it would be interesting to see if it was the same one...
I cant tell you what caused it but i can tell you the same thing happened to my son when he went and got his 12 mth shots. He was saying 2-4letter words and then stopped right after his shots. Before the shots you could understand what he was saying then afterwards he started babbling sounds just like a baby. He never did talk right when he did start talking and at 3yrs. old, he was just starting to say momma and daddy, and maybe 9 other words. We had to take him to speech therapy. It took him until he was 8 before he could speak clearly. He is just turning 9yrs. old in two months. I am sorry, i dont care what doctors say, but i blame those shots they gives kids. Yes, they need these shots but i still dont understand why they wont admit to the problems they cause. I know first hand what they did to my son. And yes I would still make sure he got his shots but if I had some warning, I could have been prepared for it and done something about it sooner. Im not saying this will happen to ur niece, dont let it scare you. just know, this does happen. It could be many other reasons so if the doctor doesnt give her much info, someone needs to do there research online and maybe they can get some idea of the problem.
