3Yo Poop

Hi all,

So Google has freaked the living daylights out of me so I'm turning to you all to see if what is going on is pretty normal or if I should be contacting her ped asap.

Yesterday my 3yo had a bowel movement that was pretty loose, a little diarrhea like, but not worrisome in my opinion. Then, this morning, I heard her through the monitor to signal she was awake and as I approached her door, I could already smell she had pooped and when I opened the door, the smell was definitely stronger than usual. When I opened her diaper, she clearly had diarrhea but a large amount of mucus was also in the diaper. I've never seen this before and Google has me believing she has a parasite and needs to be rushed to the hospital. She has no other symptoms, no fever, no loss of appetite, she's drinking normally and right now she's singing and dancing along to Dora on TV. Does, this large amount of mucus warrant a call to the ped or would you wait it out a couple of days to see if any other symptoms arise?

TIA!

What can I do next?

Sometimes when a child is constipated, their large intestine secretes a mucuous sort of slime to allow the stool to pass through easier and it can be found in their poop.
Also, depending if she is coughing or not she might have a slight cold or allergies and sometimes there can be an over production of mucus which sometimes can pass through the colon into the childs stool.
If you want to call the pediatrician so you can have some peace of mind then do that. She does not need to be rushed to the hospital though, if you say she is eating normal , in good spirits, not lethargic, no vomiting etc then there is no cause for concern. I hope this helps.

Even if it is a parasite, it's not the end of the world and she will probably get over it on her own - especially if she doesn't get any antibiotics. Those clear away the good flora which allows the parasite to thrive.

We end up fighting my son's parasite for 13 months before he was diagnosed.

Did you know that doctors may not even consider what your child has as diarrhea? My doctor old me not to worry if my son did not have 7 or more bowel movements per day, weight loss, or other symptoms of illness. It doesn't appear that you need to worry.

If your daughter's symptoms do become a worry, take her to the doctor and tell him that she has been exposed to a parasite and ask for a stool test. It may take more than one. Perhaps that will save you what we went through. 7 doctors and 28 visits before they actually took it seriously enough to run the test and make a diagnosis. After all, these infections are very rare.

Ps. My son had no ill effects. He is playing baseball at a university and is set to graduate in only 2 1/2 years.

Call the pediatrician. They can best tell you if this is something you should worry about.

Call your pediatrician to discuss what may be going on. Also, there's apparently a virus going around so maybe she caught that.

You Dr. probably has a nurses line you could call w/out having to go in. I know tht when my daughter eats too many milk based products she can get like that... but she's not lactose intolerant, just too much yoghourt and milk

Has she had alot of sinus drainage? This can sometimes lead to yucky diapers. Call your pediatrician and ask if it is ok to give her benadryl. Our pediatrician let me in on this little secret when my daughter was younger...stops the diarrhea.

I'm a wait and see sorta mom (for most situations). If she is acting normal I would give her a day or two. If it persists or if she starts acting like she is ill, then i would take her to the doc.

I know my daughter has had a spell of diarrhea that was a little mucusy when she was younger, it was only once, and I think it was something she ate. She was fine.
