I don't know if she is too young, but try checking her thyroid. I have the same symptoms, but I've never heard a child suffering from thyroid problems.
Recently we noticed that our 3yo daughter is losing clumps of hair. Her hair is not tangled or in a knot, it just comes out in long strands, her handful size at a time. Her diet hasn't changed, her vitamins changed but after it started happening... Any thoughts? I will call her pediatrician when she is in next week, just wanted to see if I can get thoughts/ideas here first.. Thanks in advance for your help, it is much appreciated.

I loose my hair when my thyroid is out of whack. That might be worth checking.
One other mom commented that it could be thyroid related and my mom had something similar happen to her because of her thyroid and it was treated through medication. It could also be something like alopecia since the hair is coming out in large clumps. The main thing is just to bring her in and get her tested. Hair loss can happen for so many different reasons ... However, if it is the thyroid, she may be experiencing other symptoms that are harder for her to notice and you will want to get her on medication to regulate the hormone. The thyroid controls a lot of stuff that you wouldn't think of!
you sound just like my mom when i was 3. i have alopecia. if your doctor diagnoses your daughter with alopecia and you want to ask me specific questions, feel free to email me. a common sign of alopecia is quarter-sized bald spots.
Not sure about the hair loss, but are you sure it's OK to give kids Melatonin? My bottle says not for kids under 12.
You might want to ask your Dr. about that too. Best Wishes.
My sister lost all of her hair when she was 3. They found out she was allergic to dogs.
This has happened to my niece a few times, she has very thin light hair as it is, so it is sad. She is now 8 years old. My SIL has taken her to the doctor, at least the first two times, but she's tested fine for everything.
I would take her to her doctor when she gets back, it could be something, but it may be nothing, and I hope it is nothing. Good luck!

If you see bald spots then I would be concerned if it is coming out in clumps not to worry. My daughter at this age I think went through this. It had to do more with losing her baby hair. Her brother would grab her hair (he was a baby then) and giant clumps would come out and he didn't even pull hard! I freaked! Same happened if I did brush her hair. Our Pediatrician said if there wasn't bald spots showing up it was more likely her baby hair coming out and new hair coming in. As long as new hair is growing and she has no bald patches I wouldn't worry too much. She had baby fine hair and I was in a panic because she didn't have much to lose in the first place. Now at 7 her hair is a lot thicker and more full. I think it is normal but good you are going in to see your physician. Good luck.
It might be alopoecia areatta. I have had that often through out my life, starting as a teenager. The hair does come out in clumps. I was treated with little shots in my scalp.
It could be many thngs, though, so check with your doctor.

It could be alopecia or low thyroid. Have both checked, and also I would question the melatonin at 3 years old.
