So What Happened?

We are in China. We can't afford to go to an International Hospital. So we went to a Chinese hospital and nobody can or explain the situation clearly to me.

My son fell down and he's been complaining about pain in his shoulder. We took him to the Chinese hospital (as I've mentioned above). We do x-ray and found that his collar bone was broken or kind of cracked. The Chinese doctor said "mei shi". Means not a big deal. They put him an 8 figure bandage. They used simple bandage and the next day it loosen up. Me and my husband made our own 8 figure bandage following the instructions we found in the net and as what we'd seen how the Chinese doctor did it.

From that on, he's been coughing mostly in the evening. The doctor again said his lungs are ok. And the part of the fractured collar bone is bulging. Does his fractured collar bone healing right? would it not cause some problem later in his life? Or any one out there has the same problem when he was a toddler and how are you now?

You HAVE to take your baby to a HOSPITAL!!! In a case like this, you can't worry about the money right now. The hospital will surely make arrangements for you. Either way, this is your CHILD and he is hurt. It is your responsibility as his parents to get him proper medical care/treatment immediately! I can't even imagine the pain he must be in.........

Is his arm in a sling as well? I've read the arm should be in a sling here, and he should have his arm in a sling for about 3-4 weeks:

I don't know if the coughing could be related or not, I wouldn't think it would be. "In rare cases, a broken collarbone can injure a lung or rib or pinch nerves or blood vessels. This may cause the arm to turn pale, tingle, and feel cool or numb."

Since you mentioned a bulge, it sounds like what my pedi called a "green stick fracture" - something my oldest had many years ago! Is the bulge just over the spot where the fracture is? That's how it was w/my son. And they actually seem to have given you a very effective and cheap way to help it heal! My pedi back then used cloth diapers on his tables (much more comfortable than that old paper) - we stretched out the one on the table that son had just laid on and doc butterflied (your figure 8) it VERY TIGHTLY and diaper-pinned it between his shoulder blades! This is way cheaper than the darn brace - and it was very washable, a very good factor since this happened in the summer! Just keep doing the figure 8/butterfly and keep it TIGHT - little one will be fine and the swelling will go down in a few days!

ps - green stick fracture means the bone is cracked along the length of the bone not across it!

Wow, definitely give him medicine for the cough to keep it from throwing his collar bone out more. I hope he has sufficient pain medicine for that poor collar bone. Let him sleep upright at night. He could also have caught a secondary infection so if you can afford it, ask your dr for antibiotics if he hasn't already prescribed them.
Keep bandaging it tight. If that is what you have to work with, then you have to make do. Even in first rate hospitals, some types of injuries just have to heal on their own. My mother broke her collar bone and was in a neck brace for a month but the break was close to her shoulder so I don't know if a brace would help him.

Good Luck and try to keep your sanity!
