My son has severe allergies...he has been tested several times and only shows up with allergy to peanuts and dogs. He does have severe eczema.
We have no animals in our home, have removed all carpet and laid hard woods. I am a major clean freak...we are completely peanut free at home and school. He even has his own box of snacks at school to be on the safe side.
He is currently taking Aterax twice a day, Doxepin at night and Cingular once a day.
We apply Alclometasone to his face twice a day and Fluocinoncide twice a day to the rest of his body then cover that with Aquaphor. We apply all medicines with in three minutes of a bath...usually an Oatmeal bath.
I am at my wits end...The doctors cant seem to find the problem and the dermatologist just keeps increasing the dosage. I feel like he is just drugged all the time. He will be clear one minute and then all the sudden he is covered in welts all over his arms, legs, stomach, face and hands. We can give him 1 1/2 teaspoons of Benedryl and he usually clears up in a couple hours. We can only do this if he has not had a dose of the other meds in the past two hours...if so he just has to suffer.
He will scratch until it bleeds if he can.
Any ideas? Any one that has experienced this with their child?
I just cant stand to see my baby in this misery any more...

My son went through the same thing when he was younger. He has severe allergies and had bad eczema. We used the aquaphor and the oatmeal baths which helped very little. I also had a steroid cream that helped. Try elidel and lidamantle which is non steroid cream that helped alot. Also since its cold right now talk to the dermatologist about getting a script or some have them in their office for the tanning beds. It might help and during the summer when its hot have him active outside. The sun really helps. Also red dyes will cause him to break out and check to see if he is allergic to dairies. And just fyi eczema coincides with asthma which my son now has but outgrew the eczema. For allergies the cingular is the best I think so far. I hope this helps at least a little

I recently had a business partner tell me that her son (same age as yours) was on steroids since he was eleven months old and still woke up with bloody sheets and pj's every morning. So sad...and the steroids long term are not without consequences!

I don't have a cure for you (although it cured her son) but I sure have a scientifically proven suggestion. Melaleuca (www.melaleuca.com) has a product called ReNew - a pharmaceutical grade lotion that is all natural (no drugs whatsoever) and moms for years have raved about it helping with ezecema. I think there is 1000 reasons a child can have ezecema...but healing the sores and eliminating the itch is a major plus. Revew will do that.

Also...another thing I hear moms talk about is the difference when they switch their entire household to nontoxic personal care and cleaning products and how it has helped the allergy situation. Melaleuca manuafactures over 300 products that fit that category and they are less expensive than store brands since they do not advertize and put them on store shelves, but depend on word of mouth as I am telling you and ship straight to customers. I do not sell products (although I do get paid for referrals) - Melaleuca does not have distributors and is not MLM - but I don't care if you contact me or let them match you with someone else to check this out...you need to know there is help!

The advice you have been given to stay away from the sugar (and white flour) and make sure he gets enough rest is essential. It's an immune system problem you are dealing with and those things weaken the immune system - lack of regular scheduled sleep, sugar and white four. I could talk half a day about all that...but I'll let you get some sleep! <grin>

My daughter had a full body case of excema. After changing doctors several times it turned out she has a disorder where her body does not absorb zinc (and ectodermal dysplasia which is partly a skin disorder unless your child has issues with hair and teeth he probably doesnt have E.D but) the doctor gave her a presciption for zinc and the full body excema went away.

Are there other symptoms besides skin reactions? Have you gotten a second opinion? Someone told me that eating local honey will help build up resistence to allergies. I'm allergic to almost everything in my environment but I don't break out in rashes like that. I know what Aquaphor is but what are the other medicines that you are applying to his skin? Maybe the combination of ointments is causing a reaction. I know the idea of trying to go without one even just once is such a conflicting decision but its the only way to see if it could be whats making things worse.

As far as foods go. Are you reading all food labels? No peanut oils or any foods containg peanuts. Also If you or anyone near your son eat anything with peanuts or peanut oil in it and then kiss your son, he could have a reaction that way as well. Some people don't think of this because he not actually ingesting the peanuts but this could explain his face breaking out.

I hope you get to the bottom of this and get your son better. I will keep you in my thought and prayers.

My son is also allergic to peanuts and had severe eczema. He had it so young that they kept saying that he wasn't supposed to have it yet! Anyway, he is 5 now, and it's all gone. The peanut allergy is under control, and only periodically will he break out from an "unknown" cause. I sort of went the other way. I started using less medicine. I began running a humidifier at home, giving him short, tepid baths and bathing him with Cetaphil only every other day. Aquaphore didn't touch his eczema. Neither did the prescription stuff. We used Neutrogena Swiss Body Formula in the morning and at night. I have a friend who said that her daughter responds well to Arbonne Baby Care lotion. (I am a consultant and had her try it, because my son doesn't have it anymore, and I wanted to see if it worked.) So, once we got the eczema under control, I quit giving him the medcine all together. He takes nothing now. We steer clear of peanuts and long-haired cats or dogs. If he gets near them, we go for the Benedryl. I also use honey grown locally when it's pollen season. I try to make sure that he's eats very healthy and gets lots of sleep. (No caffeine when you've got eczema. And sugar weakens the body's ability to fight off germs.) He seems to fight things off better when he does. I hope this helps. I'm not a doctor, though, so make sure that your doctor knows what's going on.

Same thing happened to us. Have you tried changing your washing detergent? If it is an all over rash then that could be what it is. If you do try it, don't forget to wash everything including the linens.

I have a daughter who is now 13 years old and has had allergies her whole life. But we recently found out in the last year that there were shots that she could take once a week along with the daily medications that she takes. She is now doing much better. So if you are not already doing so, you may want to talk to the doctor about it. Also, if the baby is not already seeing a allergy specialist, it would be best to do so. Good luck.

T. - have they tested him for dustmite allergies? My daughter has some of the same symptons although she was diagnosed with psoraisis (sp?) and allergies to cats and dust mites. I have to give her baby oil baths and lotion several times a day - plus she is on a generic claritan. Have you taken him to an actual allergist - I would recommend AIA over on Gunbarrel - That is who I am recently taking my daughter to, they also deal in dermatology and asthma - Our next step isnt more medicine with her - we are going to try steroid cream if she isnt better at her may visit.

It sounds like your baby has hives. My oldest daughter is on medication regularly for them. She is on Atarax 3 times a day. She takes Singulair for her other allergies. She is on Advair for her asthma. She also has ecxema. So I do feel your pain. All of my kids and myself suffer with Asthma. You might want to get second opinion. All of those meds are not good for him. He will just become immune to them and the doctor will increase the dosage again. I have been thru several doctors before I found out that she was also allergic to trees and cats. The only food allergy is milk. That I can pretty much deal with. My kids see an allergist at the start of every season along with their primary care doctor. I wish you luck and you and your baby are in my prayers. I just hate to see kids go thru all of that.

Hi T.. I have a two year old who has severe allergies. She is allergic to peanuts, soy, oatmeal, wheat, eggs, milk, shellfish, fish, and dust mites. Before my baby was tested, I was frustrated to with all the medicine. It seemed as if nothing I did worked and the antibiotic would only clear it up for a couple of days and then everything would be back to normal. Since the tests, I only give her real food, by that I mean things like corn, greens, peas, chicken, and mashed potatoes. I've eliminated anything with ingredients she's allergic to. My question to you is did they test her blood for allergies? I asked because that is the best way, from my understanding, to test them. I can honestly say that since I had her tested, I've decreased the medicine and learned to pay attention to the warning signs of an allergic reaction, mainly the redness in her cheeks. This has been so helpful in maintaining her eczema and allergies, along with using the right soaps and chemicals around her.
