Hi all,

My 3 YO was put on a low dose course of a sulfa based antibiotic to manage his constant ear infections....He developed a bad rash all over his body. We of course stopped the drug and the doctor gave him some special drops to manage the reaction :)

Have any of your little ones experieced this? His rash is not itchy or anything, but just curious if there is anythng I can do to help the antibiotic leave his body quicker or help speed up the healing????

Thanks for your usual good insights.

Jilly

I... am allergic to Sulfa based drugs. AND sulfites... as in food preservatives. So LOOK AT LABELS carefully.

For ME... I get the inability to breathe.
It is very serious.
My Dad was like that too.
He ended up in the hospital once, because of it.

Now you know, he is allergic to it.

Give him fluids, water.

From now on, you will have to NOTE this down, on any paperwork/school info sheets etc., that he is allergic to Sulfa drugs and tell any doctor that he has not seen before.
AND as he gets older, you need to TEACH HIM, how to say himself, that he is allergic to it.

I'm also allergic to anything sulfa based. I wonderful hives and have major vomiting and awful stomach cramps for days. I had an eye infection 2 weeks ago and who would have thought eye drops have sulfa in them? Yep. Good thing my eye Doctor asked during the exam if I was allergic to anything. She said, I'm glad I asked.

My son has an allergy to sulfa-based products as well. I had given him some eye drops that the doctor had prescribed when he had pink eye last year. He immediately started to get hives on his face, neck and back. It turns out that the eye drops were sulfa-based.

Be sure to give your son lots of fluids. I don't think there is really much more that you can do. He will be better soon!

I have 5 kids. My oldest will be 18 in a couple of weeks. When he was a baby, he used to get ear infections all the time. He got the the point where they wouldn't go away at all so the doctor put him on a low dose of antibiotics. He was on them until he was 18 months old and then they put tubes in his ears. He did great until he was about 2 1/2 and his tubes fell out. Then he started having trouble all over again. He was sick and he couldn't hear. The doctor wanted to put him back on low dose antibiotics and do the tubes again. I didn't do it. I told the doctor no more and that I was going to try a natural alternative. The doctor said it wouldn't work but wanted to see him in two weeks after the antibiotic. I didn't give him the antibiotic but tried the natural stuff I was already researching. I brought in my healthy son two weeks later and the doctor checked him out and said "He looks great!" Of course, with my others, I was able to prevent and treat naturally without ever having to go through that again. My son is also allergic to sulfa antibiotics. He got hives all over his body. I treated and prevented ear infections with echinacea (one of my children is allergic though), colloidal silver, elderberries, vitamin C, ear cones etc. Also, after my son being on antibiotics so much, I had to give him MSM and acidopholus to clear up his candida that was caused by too much antibiotics. It helped though. Good luck to you!!

Be sure to always tell the pharmacist that he cannot take any meds that have sulfa in them. If the pharmacist blows you off then make sure you use one that pays attention and researches the med before they fill it. The docs don't look up the chemical compounds on the drug company website to make sure what is in the med before writing a prescription, they just really have a minimal idea about drugs, always talk to the pharmacist.

My friend is allergic to sulfa's too and you would not believe how many drug companies use sulfa in the filler. She can't take the generic of just about any med due to this. She has been in life threatening situations from this, like Plavix, the generic almost killed her and low and behold, the generic has sulfa in the filler.

It is a big issue for her, seriously, nearly every med has it in it.

Good thing you stopped the drug. Same thing happened to me, except I kept taking the drug and develped difficulty breathing. I am also sensitive to sulfa foods: wine, garlic, onion, also be careful about sulfites in dried fruit. Usually organic dried fruit is not treated with sulfites...read your labels.

The best thing you can do is give him lots of water and probiotics. We use Acidophilus Probiotic by Nature's Life. It is in liquid form and is delicious. The strawberry apple flavor is the best. When my daughter gets a cold, we give her the probiotic and the cold goes away almost immediately. When the intestinal health is good, so is the rest of your health. Antibiotics destroy your intestinal health. I learned this the hard way.

You can help avoid ear infections by limiting his dairy, organge juice, and wheat. These foods create mucus. I know of people who just eliminated dairy from thier kids life and their ear aches went away.

Good luck.

Yep, my son was prescribed Amoxycillin for Strep last year and he got a full body rash including the bottoms of his feet. His wasn't itchy either, but it didn't look good...very similar to pictures of measles. His Ped prescribed low dose steroids and Benadryl to get rid of the rash faster. Creams don't help, NOTHING else helped! And, after a bath, it always made it appear darker. Poor guy, I hope he feels better than he might seem/look ;)

I'm the same way with sulfa drugs! It goes away on its own fairly quickly, but another mama was right. He'll always have that allergy, so you'll have to be vigilant about informing his doctors. I had an orthopedic dr one time who wanted to put me on an anti-inflammatory drug, but guess what... you couldn't take it if you were allergic to sulfa drugs! So, it's not always antibiotics you have to look out for. Luckily, sulfa drugs aren't necessary. There are always alternatives. Good luck! =)

my daughter had the same reaction to a sulfa antibiotic. it went away quickly after we stopped the medication on it's own. She didn't seem to be in any pain or have any itching.

It's not uncommon for people to be allergic to sulfa type drugs and you need to make sure it is on his medical records stating he is as well!! Sulfa type drugs are also used in certain UTI medications as well. That's how I found out I was allergic. My arms and legs started to loose blood flow and I couldn't even stand up long enough to zip my pants from going to the bathroom!! It was scary and I was an adult too. You can give him benydral for any side effects that should help but nothing will make the antibiotic leave his system faster.
