Hi girls, we are trying to potty train my 3 1/2 year old daughter, she has no problem peeing on the potty but will not poop. She has very hard, very large bowel movements, which I think contributes to the problem. She won't drink prune juice, and she only drinks milk and water so I can't mix it with other juice. Any ideas?

What can I do next?

If she is having very hard stools, you may want to try Miralax or pedialax to help soften the stool and give her the urge to go. Talk with your ped first, but this may be an option. Also, the milk may be contributing to her constipation. Maybe try out Soy milk for awhile.

Agree with previous poster, go to the ped first, and have her checked out. They will probably recommend the Miralax. I have a 6yr old that still has the same issues. The Miralax helps soften it up, and helps them to go more often.

I agree with checking with your ped. about softening the stools. We are also training our 3 year old and he would only pee...not poop. We tried offering "prizes" (he picked fruit snacks) for pooping and it didn't seem to motivate him. Than 1 day he just started pooping on the potty (we were still using the fruit snacks as incentives)...It seemed like all of a sudden he decided he was ready b/c nothing else was different. This was about a week ago and he's been doing pretty good. He gets very excited when he poops now...2 weeks ago I never thought that would happen.
Good Luck!

Hi J.,
I have to put mineral oil in my daughter's cups because she have such hard stools. There is no taste but it helps it come out a little easier.
We are also 3-1/2 and training but I can't offer any suggestions since it is a very slow process here.
Good Luck to you (and your daughter)!
