First of all i am almost 47 and have a 5 year old daughter, and you have a granddaughter- amazing! We picked a school and found they did financial aid through F.A.C.T.S. I believe on their site you can enter a zip and find schools that work with them. Also just by calling around you can ask individual schools if they have a program. Some public elementary schools are also offering preschool noe. Hope this hekps H.

Depending on the location, they can probably qualify for low income preschool if they live in Torrance. LAUSD has a preschool program that is free at local schools. Just have them look to their local public schools for assistance first, since the private preschools do have a cost.

Try www.laup.net (Los Angeles Universal Preschool) or www.headstartinfo.org (Head Start). Also, look at the Child Development Center at El Camino College.

You might try Headstart. Tuition is based on income. Here is the link to help you locate a facility in your area......http://eclkc.ohs.acf.hhs.gov/hslc/HeadStartOffices.
I hope this is helpful.

Call your local elementary school and ask about the Head Start program. You can also search on the web by Googling Head Start Los Angeles. Ask around to other moms and grandmas - they could recommend a good preschool program and many offer some financial assistance. Good luck!

Hello C.,
You may want your daughter-in-law to check out the pre-school at El Camino College. I have heard they have a good program. I think some of the teaching may be done by supervised college students.

Hi there,
I enrolled my daughter in Good Shepherd PreK in Torrance for $160/month for 2 days a week. It's only for the morning and I know your DIL is looking for a job and may need to be away from home for more hours. I have heard of a program called Sonrise in....Lawndale (I think) and it's less than $200/month for a nearly full day (9-3). Also there is a preschool near my home that is subsidized for struggling families-who isn't struggling these days? It's on the corner of Rindge and Plant-sorry I don't know the name.

I know this is mostly vague info, I hope it has helped in some way. There are options out there! >sigh< it's not easy, but I'm sure you'll find the best fit for your family.

E.

Try the South Bay Adult School's program -- they start out with Mommy & Me Classes from birth - age 3 but at age 3 they have a wonderful parent-participation (the parents work in the class along side a teacher) pre-school through age 5. It is very affordable (the program I did before age 3 was only $169 for six months -- so about $350 for the whole year because the state matches funds!!) and I think the pre-school is not that much more. Parents do bring snacks and have to provide some supplies so there is a bit more cost to factor in through the year but it is not a lot. You must live in the South Bay and register (it is the parent that registers as it is considered a Continuing Education for Adults program in child development I think but it is a real preschool) and the classes do fill up -- but they take folks off the waiting list as there are openings even mid-year. The program is 3 days a week I think and it may go to 4 days when they turn 4. We were going to do it but we unexpectedly got into another school that we liked a lot that has a long waitlist (also not too expensive but with smaller classes) -- but we would have been fine continuing in South Bay Adult program and many of my friends are still in it and love it.

Hi C. -

There are a few co-op preschools around. One is in Westchester, not too geographically undesireable for South Bay. If Culver City isn't too far away, check out LaPlaya. There may be others I don't know of.

My daughter went to LaPlaya and we absolutely loved it. The co-ops are less expensive, because parent participation is how it's run. We started her at 3 days/week, going up to 5 days. She's in 3rd grade now, so I don't know how much they charge, but we paid around $250/mo at the highest. It's not full day, however. Just 1/2 day. But that's what I wanted anyway.

All the best to you & your family,
Colleen

If you can't find them, email me & I'll give you contact info. I just don't have it at my fingertips right now, but can easily get it.

Many of the public schools is the south bay have a CDC (child development)program and they offer financial assistance for families who need it. Check with the school that your granddaughter would be attending and see if they offer CDC, and if not, which school they recommend. There is also the South Bay Adult School, which has a wonderful preschool program with very little cost, but it does require parent/adult participation.

Go to your nearby preschool, & tell them you're looking to be enrolled in the low income program.

The preschool will bring you forms to fill out (for low income families).

If the preschool doesn't have these forms, then ask them to recommend a preschool that does offer low income programs.

Try looking for a Headstart in your area. They are government funded and free. They also provide students with meals and field trips as well. Good luck!
