3 Year Old Check up Meltdown

Hi All. I took our 3 year old for her "3 year check up" yesterday and she completely melted down to the point where the doc said "I'm sure she's fine - we'll see her when she's four." I think the problem is two-fold. 1) She woke up VERY early yesterday (not normal) so she was tired. 2) she's only been to the doctor for regular check-ups b/c she's never been sick (occasional sniffle or a slight fever yes, but never anything we needed to take her to the doc for) so she has only been there once since she was two and it scared her. She's a great eater/sleeper - she's a social butterfly in normal circumstances and talks up a storm - has all the basics down as far as learning goes BUT I weighed her and measured her height and they finally got a blood pressure on our way out the door when she calmed down but nobody really checked her out (eyes/ears/heart)...I felt like they should have tried again once she had her bp done and said "that was fun mommy" - the nurse seemed irritated and although I'm not usually sensitive when it comes to this stuff I left feeling like we were looked at as problematic...isn't it normal for a 3 year old to melt down at the doctor? We have a doctor kit at home that we play with...I talked to her about going and she was actually excited to tell the doc she was potty trained and had a birthday...not sure what else we could have done to make it go more smoothly. The doc was polite/nice about it but I felt like she just didn't want to deal with us and gave up too easy...thought???

What can I do next?

Your 3 year old probably was just having a bad day. All kids do. My issue would have been with the doctor and his/her staff. My pediatrician and all the doctors in the group are fabulous. They have such a wonderful way with children. My sons at times too have had melt downs at the office and the dr's have always been able to calm them down by allowing them to use the stethoscope or making a funny while checking there ears. The group is ABC Pediatrics and our primary physician is Dr. Erin Shanks. Every doctor in the group is FABULOUS. They will take 45 minutes if they have to with the children. If my children get sick I can call and they will fit me in the same day. There number is ###-###-#### if you are considering changing doctors they are the doctors to go to. They are in naperville on book and 75th st.

Find a new pediatrician. They deal with scared/wild/sleepy/melting down kids every day all day. There is no excuse for them to not give your child a full and proper check up.

Yes, you are right. Her assesment was not completed, and you should call and say that her check up was not completed due to her melt down, and you would like to reschedule. Pick a time that is not close to a meal time or naptime, and you think she would be most likely to cooperate. It is normal for 3 year olds to have meltdowns, and they should know that too. If they are not receptive to your concerns, however, and continue to treat you as "problematic" then maybe it is time to find a new doctor.

I'm not sure if your doctor will let you do this but he did it with my kids. He would listen to my heart and then look at them and say do you want to hear. Or would let them sqeeze the arm tickler (bp) you have to laugh like crazy, lol. he would draw a happy face on the tounge depresser and say Mr. smiley is going to look at mommy's throat. Do you want to see? Everytime I had something done to me I got to do it to them and I just had to show the doctor too!! This broke the ice with them and doc got what he needed.I had a physical every time my kids did. When the kids were little mommy had ponies in her ears. Frogs in her lower tummy, a bell in my throat, ect... If you doctor is not open to this idea then you might have one that does not have a childs bed side manor and may want to think about a new doctor. Your daugther has to be comfortable with the doctor so she will tell him how she feels when she is sick. That is something you can't do for her. Think about it.

I have to agree with Jennifer P. You did get ripped off. It is hard enough to go through something like this but to not have the support of the doctor and staff? These people are suppose to care about your child. Do you still trust them? I wouldn't. When it comes to kids, you can't assume anything. That's why we schedule regular check ups. I too would look for a new doc. Good Luck!

Sounds like you got ripped off! The doctor is there to perform a service. They should have checked her out. I would change pediatricians.

We just had our 3yr old check up a few months back. I was surprised at how little was done. Just a quick check and out the door! The ped actually told me this was the easiest check up in childhood. He also prepared me that next year at the 4yr old check up there will be tons of shots, and its the worse one you go thru. Something to look forward to! In any case, you might have been shuffled out of the office rather quickly regardless of your child having a meltdown or not. If you were truly unhappy, you could always switch docs, but if you've been happy up to this point, I wouldn't worry too much.
