3 Month Old Teething? - Playa del Rey,CA

We THINK my 3 month old son may be starting the teething process. He is constantly putting his fist in his mouth and drooling like crazy. But he also has a little dry cough which is not consistent nor does it produce any 'phlemmy coughing' and I was curious if this is something that may be the result of excessive saliva. Also about an hour after he has his bottle he gets a gurgling sound in his throat and it's almost as if he's about to spit up but doesn't all the time and if is held upright then nothing comes out most of the time. He's never been a big spitter upper-this has all started happening in the last week or so. He's 13 weeks tomorrow. Agin, I'm curious if it's the saliva factor? Anyone with the same type of experience? We are seeing his Pedi next week and I will of course ask these questions...but I'm curious of other experiences...THANKS!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your opinions and advice. After a trip to the pediatrician we have determined that the cough is not serious and could be because both myself and husband have 'coughs' following our colds at the moment. And that the excessive saliva may not be a contributing factor, although I really believe that it is.
But he has definitely begun the teething process although we won't see a tooth for some time. As for the spitting up, it has gotten alot better this week but his new thing is he HATES to be burped! So getting through bottles with a good burp or two is a challenge so my husband and I now have to try and distract him somehow to have him forget the whole burping thing.
I am now REALLY looking forward to the solids thing...

I'm glad you posted this. You have described my 2 month old to a Tee. She has actually been experiencing these symptoms for the past month and I swear she's teething also but everyone I ask thinks it's too soon. Now that I've read other responses, I still believe that she is teething, only slowly.

My daughter is 11 weeks today and she just started doing the same thing. I thought she was teething early. Unfortunately, with all this, she has gotten a cold. Her nose is also stuffed up in addition to the symptoms you've stated. No fever yet though. I'm only going to take her to the dr. if the cold part gets worse, not the teething symptoms.

J.,
When my daughter was three months she did the same thing. The pediatrician figured she was teething. The symptoms stopped and now at 5 1/2 months have started again. She still has no teeth. She also got congested with her teething symptoms. She congested and cranky right now....argh! Her pediatrician said teething is like fishing, you never know when you'll catch one.
Good luck,

Hi J....

It's strange that I just asked this almost exact question last week and my baby boy was also 13 weeks when I asked. Weird coincidence..lol. Anyhow My little boy is officially teething as well. His ped looked at it this past week and sure enough there is a little white nub right at the surface. She did tell me it can takes weeks for that little nub to pop through and that the excessive drooling, and fist sucking/ gnawing is completly normal. I hav noticed he gets a little fussy sometimes also when he has been gnawing at his first for a bit...so I'm thinking it may be uncomfortable. So we went out and got the Hylands teething tablets..they worked great with my daughter so hopefully they work with him. I would just rub the tablet on his gums till it dissolved and always seem to do the trick. I didnt even put the little cough together like you did...that answers a lot more of the questions behind the phantom cough. It makes so much sense that all that extra drool would roll to the back of the throat and they would start to cough. Guess this is why mamasource works. I look forward to reading other moms responses about the phantom cough and your question..good luck with your little teether too. Aloha, W.

p.s. along with the cold wet washcloth, and rubbing the gums to soothe. I found a teething ring for newborn that looks like a pacifier but instead of a nipple it had very gummy piece for them to gnaw on, and the base of it was almost diamond shaped. I do believe I got it at toysrus?

My daughter got teeth a three months and then lost her first before kindergaten which is really early- the only bad thing is their brushing technique-when their big teeth come in early and they are not great brushers yet because they are so young-it can affect their teeth- my daughter had a lot of cavities until we had sealents put on her adult teeth(she had a whole mouth full of adult teeth very early) so watch for that.
As far as the other stuff ask the pedi- make sure nothing else is going on with the back of his throat.

Every baby cuts teeth totally differently. My son got his bottom two teeth by 4 months and my daughter got her first teeth between 7 and 8 months. Your son could be beginning to cut his first teeth. One day you will feel his gums and there will be some razor sharp little teeth beggining to emerge. Have a good time with your new little one!

All three of my kids had teeth at 4 months old. I got to enjoy nursing twins with teeth whew hoo! :)
Their saliva becomes more acidic because it is trying to break down the gum a bit so that the tooth can come through. What your experiencing is normal. They can get an upset stomach as well again due to the acidic saliva. When the teeth do cut through, use a washcloth to wipe of his teeth. There are baby toothbrushes if you rather use those as well. It is very important to take care of those little teeth as soon as they come through.
Isnt teething fun? :)

It is very possible. My son whom is a few weeks shy of 6 months is already working on his third tooth. He took began teething at 3 months old. However his dr swore I was a crack pot mom and didn't know what I was talking about. 2 weeks before he turned 4 months his 2 bottoms had surfaced. Try freezing a wash cloth in the freezer and giving it to him to gnaw on, or even massaging his gums with your clean finger works well. I found it very hard and frustrating to find any sort of teething toy that he could manipulate into his mouth. One thing I found that did help him was they have feeding pacifiers that have little mesh nets, I would use crushed ice in them. It can happen as early as 3 months. Good luck!

HI,

Are the gums red or sore to the touch? This may or may not be an indication that he is teething. My daughter was teething at the age of 3 months and by the time she was 6 months, she had two teeth.

The doctor will probably say that he is not teething. With all the hormones in the food today, it is likely that he is. I would suggest that you buy some teething pills. They are "Hylands" teething pills. They work for all kinds of mouth and teeth problems on babies and adults. They are all natural and herbal pills. If they work, he is teething. You can give them to him several times a day.

Hi there.. I too have a 3.5 month old baby boy- he too has been having the same issues your baby is having. He started drooling a lot a few weeks ago and also is gnawing on his fists. He is not a big pacifier lover- but I notice that he will gnaw on it in the sides of his mouth. Normally, he doesn't cry and is a pretty happy baby- so I wondered if his gums were bothering him when he would fuss. I begin to think that- yes, he is teething and have asked friends about their experiences. They have had their kids start the teething process around this time- but maybe a tooth comes in around the 4th or 5th month. So, yes- it could be!

Also- something that I found that helps him is those homeopathic teething tablets that dissolve in their mouths. They seem to really work great! They calm him down. They have those along with the gassy/colic tablets. Same brand. They are great!

Hope that helps!

Hi J..

Not sure about all of the symptoms that you listed but I can tell you that my daughter cut her teeth EARLY. By the time she was 2.5 months old, she cut TWO TEETH! NOT good news for a first-time mommy trying to breastfeed. I remember bringing her in to her Ped's office and everyone was shocked.

From that point on, my kiddo cut a tooth for each month.

I recall that my daughter had a slight fever each time she came close to cutting her teeth, lots of drooling, but since she was too young for excessive mobility, we didn't see much hand-in-mouth action until she was a little older.

Good luck to you. OUr kiddos sure keep up on our feet, don't they?

I have a 3.5 mo. old as well. He started drooling as early as 4 wks old. He is my 4th child & the only one who started drooling this early. He has also been sticking his fist in his mouth. Also when I am holding him he tries to chomp down on my fingers. I am breastfeeding him & for the last few weeks he will chomp down really hard at times. My nephew got his first tooth in at 4 months,so, it may be possible that our boys are teething.

Your 3 month old son hopefully is not teething at such a young age. He could be seeking something to suck on and his hands serves as a pacifier on occassion. As for the gurgling in his throat, it is probably because he needs to be held in an upright position for at least 15 - 30 minutes after feeding. Propping a child with a bottle was something my sister's pediatrician told her not to do when her daughter (now almost 20) was a newborn baby. The doctor put it clearly, can you lay flat on your back and take a sip of something? I don't think so....it's liquid he's consuming. He's probably spitting up and gagging because the milk is coming back due to gravity. Hope this helps...good luck!

We had the exact same question...Is is really possible for them to start teething so YOUNG?!? Everyone told us it's possible and that would explain the symptoms our baby was having. But I'll tell 'ya...she's 8 1/2 months old now and just YESTERDAY we got our first glimpse of her little white tooth. :) I guess for some babies, teething is a long process.

I have a 5 month old son and he does both of these things. Sounds like the mild beginnings of teething. The gurgling COULD be that he has some saliva/drool in the back of his throat. They don't know how to swallow so he has fun making noises with it. I say "COULD" because I'm just speculating. Likewise, the cough COULD be a talking thing. Sometimes that's a noise they figure out and they use it to "talk". Mine does it sometimes when he's mad and my girlfriend's does it as a friendly talking thing (like if you smile at her). I think it really just stems from them playing and experimenting with different sounds.

Out of the 50 some moms that I know they all had their baby 'teeth' around 3 months. The baby drools, and fist in mouth. I recommend putting a bib on the baby and replacing that throughout the day instead of changing 'his' whole outfit. Maybe the tooth is beginning to descend down the gum, but you wont see it for a few more months. Although, some babies can cut a tooth really early. 4 months to a year old is normal.

My 3 1/2 month old is doing the same thing and I don't have an appointment to see my pediatrician until June. He has been slobbery and chewing his fists too, Ive tried to feel if I feel any teeth yet but I don't yet. This is my first baby so I don't really know what to expect yet either.
