3 Month Old Restlessly Waking at 4:30 Am

My 3 month old son has been sleeping through the night for about 3 weeks now. Recently he has developed a habit of waking around 4:30 and being very restless for about 2 hours. I am thinking he does this out of habit and not necessity. At first I thought he was hungry so I tried feeding him and he would just eat a small amount. I try giving him his pacifier and that calms him for about 10 minutes then he starts to become restless again. He will fall back asleep around 6:30 but he eats at 7am so I wake him up then. I am back at work and really need the extra sleep so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! :)

Hi K.,

It could be something simple like hunger or teething but think back and see if you changed anything about that time. Laundry detergent, perfume, YOUR bath soap....Anything that can affect the neurological system can stimulate, especially a little one, and cause restlessness. My 85 year old mom NEVER slept well until she moved into my home where I used a non-toxic laundry detergent on the sheets.....

God bless!

DO you think he could be teething? My twin girls had their first two bottom teeth at 3 months of age so it's possible and I know kids do some really wacky things with their "normal" schedule when those teeth start to come in. I would too-it's gotta be very uncomfortable I can only imagine. Just thought I would throw this one out there though! Good Luck.

According to the traditional Chinese organ clock theory, there would be an issue with the lungs. What kind of formula is the baby drinking? Most common issues are build up of mucous due to reactions to milk.

Sorry to say I think that is normal! My 6 month old still wakes up during the night. I would recommend trying to have a strict nap/feeding schedule, though. And one of the books I read suggested waking the baby up if a nap goes past 2 hours and keeping them up for a couple hours before bedtime... Good luck, and I'm sending the sandman your way :)

My first guess would say that he's hungry. My twins who are fantastic sleepers, will occasionally wake around that time to eat. But if you say he's not hungry, do you have a mobile? Try turning that on to lull him back to sleep.

Good luck!
