3 Month Old... Cold or Allergies or Teething or WHAT?

My 3 month old son has a clear runny nose... when it's not runny, he sounds snotty. He isn't really coughing (like a cold)... could it be the change in weather? I've noticed a thin layer of pollen on everything the past 2 days, and yes, we've been outside taking advantage of this beautiful spring weather. He's not necessarily acting sick... he's always been a cranky little man, but lately he seems like he's been a bit overtired. Overall I'd say he's been a pretty good baby the past couple of weeks... just this lingering snotty nose. If it was one of my older kids, I wouldn't have thought twice about it, but since he's 3 months old and this is the first 'cold' symptom he's had... I was just wondering. ALSO, he's been stuffing everything and anything he can get his hands on (including his hands) into his mouth to munch on, and he's begun drooling like a mad man... if it possible he's begun teething??

What can I do next?

Our oldest son, who is 4 now, has allergies. (got them from me. :( ) We found out when he was a couple monthes old. He was born in March so it didn't take long for us to find out. When they are that little there wasn't too much we could do. Tylenol sometimes helped. As for putting his hand in his mouth, he maybe starting to feel he is teething, but you may not see them yet or anytime soon. We went through that w/ our 2nd son. He forever was putting things in his mouth to chew on.

If you are nursing, take some breast milk and irrigate his nose. This could be a combo. of teething and allergies. If you are open to homeopathic remedies you can try Chammomilia, or teething tablets. There are also great homeopathic allergy remedies. These are safe for babies! Feel free to contact me if you wish more info.

My daughter (22 months) has had a clear runny nose for the past 3 weeks with no other symptoms and I am starting to think it's weather/pollen related , so yes it is possible.

Also the hand biting could be a teething sign , he may not get any teeth for a few months yet but movement sometimes happens around 3 months.

It's possible that he is suffering from both teething and allergies. The pollen situation is terrible this year so that could be the source of the runny nose. Does he have any other symptoms of allergies such as itchy red eyes? I would check with his pediatrician. Not sure, if it is allergies what hey can do for him at his age but you do want to rule out a cold. The fact that everything is being stuffed in his mouth along with the drooling probable means that he is teething. Again, you want to check everything out with his pediatrician. Only they can tell you for sure what is going on with him.

My bet is on teething mostly. My son had 4 teeth at age 4 months, so it's not too early. Could be a bit of allergies, but I'd bet the symptoms would be worse with allergy. They can also have a runny nose with teething, since the nose and throat are all connected and he could just be reacting to all the dirt and stuff that he is putting in his mouth. Also, the pollen we can see is generally too big to be the allergy source, it is usually smaller pollen grains that give us trouble. Good luck!

Sounds like a bit of a reaction to the changing seasons (not necessarily allergies, just his body getting used to a new type of air) and teething.
I would just make sure he's getting enough fluids and sleeping enough. Being a little sick and teething really take it out on babies, so he should be wanting to sleep more to allow his body to work through it.
Good luck! :)

The drooling and stuffing everything into his mouth are definitely signs of teething. My son drooled heavily for a good couple of weeks before any teeth were even visible to the human eye. As for the cold symptoms, I was told that if the runny nose is clear, it's allergies and if its yellow or green, its a cold. So it sounds to me like your son is having allergies especially if he's not running a fever or acting sick in any other way.
