3 Kidneys

Good evening ladies. Hope you all had a great day. My son and DIL went for a growth ultrasound today. She is 33 weeks along
with a baby girl. It seems like the u/s tech mentioned that she might have three kidneys. Now part of me says with technology
being what it is today, if they see anything at all, they must tell you. I call it (CYA) society. Cover you a---. Now that all my friends and myself are having grandchildren, it is amazing what they put pregnant women thru. One was told her baby had a heart
problem and would need to go to NICU and be evaluated. She was and is fine. Another they kept telling the baby was so small
they were concerned. Also they were concerned because her head was measuring small. She too is fine. Just saw her yesterday. She is a beautiful, happy 11 month old. I think you see what I mean. Tech also said her abdomen is large. However,
they said she is a big baby. Has anyone had an experience like this. My head says, these u/s pick up every little thing, but my
heart is scared for my son, DIL and baby.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I love you ladies. Thanks for your responses so far. I will sleep better tonight after reading your answers. She will talk to doc
tomorrow. As of right now, she was told to come back in four weeks for another scan. Not sure who told her that. If it turns out
she does have an extra kidney, so be it. She can live with it or if it creates problems have it out. She is healthy in every other way. Will let you know what happens. I am so grateful for this site and for the support and love that comes thru.

I have three kidneys. I have two on the right side and one on the left. The two on the right are connected. I've had a lot of issues with my kidneys, none of which are connected to having three. On the plus side, when I have issues with my right kidney, the extra kidney kinda takes over and helps my body pick up the slack from what my kidney isn't filtering.

Tell her that even if the baby has three kidneys, s/he will be fine. They can remove it if they need to. If not, then she'll be fine.

*hugs*

On a positive note my niece was born with 3 kidneys, one attached to one of her kidneys. She just had it removed and is doing great, she's 4 years old. There is a possibility that the ultrasound is correct and if this is the case they will know ahead of time which is great. I'm sure if there is reason to be worried she will be sent for more scans and to a high risk OB. Try not to worry too much, my son measured large and was born at just under 7lbs at 35 weeks gestation.

if it was just something that was casually mentioned.. and the tech/doctor wasnt like o my god u have 3 kidneys!!! i wouldnt be to concerned.. when i went for my 2nd trimester ultrasound a few weeks ago.. the tech was pointing things out on the screen and my fiance and i were like how the heck are u getting that from looking at that.. alot of the stuff she was pointing out was hard to figure out by looking at it it kinda makes you wonder it couldve been something else maybe it was a bad angle that they were looking at.. the only thing i was for sure about while looking at the screen during my u/s was when they did the 3d image of the babys face it was clear as day.. the rest not so much
and just to add to your list of things u/s techs say ..years ago my cousin was told throughout her entire pregnancy that she was having a girl and she ended up having a boy

They never could measure my kids right to save their soul. My first was measured a week before he was born, they said seven pounds at the most, he was eight pounds seven ounces. Err, no way in hell he gained that in a week when I was eating next to nothing since he took up residence in my stomach. :(

They can find a lot of things, measuring I just don't think they have down to a science.

A doctor once told me that ultrasounds are glorified fish finders. I was told after an u/s that my daughter had Down Syndrome... She does not. My cousin was told her baby may have a problem with his bladder...no problem... Another friend had to get additional testing for a heart defect because of finding in an U/S...once again, no problem.
What does the doctor say?
Best of luck!

Information like that can be scary sometimes but just wait and see what the doctor says.

Better to be told this information and it not be true than to not know at all and it actually be true.

Doctors are human, they also make error sometimes. So, I don't always trust them. Because I know God is in control, good or bad. Well, they say hope for the best, prepare for the worst. Let's hope that everything is fine, I'll pray that mother child are healthy.

The US tech told me with my oldest that there were some kind of uterine bands that could cut off my baby's arms or legs! I mean, what a thing to tell a first-time mom. My OB said not to worry about it, that everything would be fine. And my daughter was, and is, perfectly fine. I think you're right, they find any tiny thing on that US screen and blow it all out of proportion. I'm sure if there's anything to worry about, the OB will tell them - and medical technology being what it is today, there will be some way to resolve the problem, if there even is one! Thinking good thoughts for your grandbaby-to-be!

I would think 3 kidneys are better than 1. Sounds like she'll be fine.

It really depends on the level of the ultra sound. A level 2 or 3 is much more detailed and is performed in a medical center/hospital. The stronger ultra sounds are so strong that anyone can tell what is what. I had to have a level 2 and I could even tell my baby was a boy! I picked out his back bone and could see the top of his head. I could even count every one of his little fingers! The higher level ones are more accurate than an anmnio. They have a 99% accuracy. The ones in the doctors office are just "toys." They really can't see detail. The heart looks like a little blinking light pulsating. Technicians aren't really supposed to tell you anyting. It has to come from the doctor. Information kept from the public is that a binge drinker or alcoholic father or mother (Yes, fathers too...I looked it up out of curiosity and found a study on the affects of on the unborn baby from the father's side.) have a higher risk for having a baby with kidney abnormalities. That doesn't mean it can't happen if you or your hubby don't drink. I believe it, because my father was an alcoholic. We didn't acknowledge it, but he was. (He drank at least 6 bottles of beers every night and was at the local bar drinking more with the exception of a few weekdays.) He'd come home drunker than a skunk. Guess what? I was born with 2 kidneys, but they were "piggybacks." That means no kidney on one side and 2 on the other, one on top of the other. It wasn't discovered until I was 4 yrs. old. I was born that way, but back then there was no ultra sound. I won't go into how it was discovered, but they had to take one out. I now have one kidney and have no problems. No one can even tell, unless I tell them, so the baby will be ok.
