22 Weeks Pregnant with Twins - How to Know If I Am Leaking Fluid ?

I am 22 weeks along with twin boys. My due date is 2-14-2010. I had an US on 10-5 and the tech said the fluid looked fine to her - but I don't think she mentioned my concern to the DR. I am constantly wetting through my underwear. I was sitting at a football game today, did not feel like I needed to go to the bathroom but felt like it was time to get up and strech. When I got to the bathroom, I realized that my underwear were soaked through ! I thought I had read that the fluid will smell different but I couldn't really smell anything in a public bathroom.

After coming home, I went to the bathroom again. This time it smelled a little like urine - but it had a weird smell as well. I had sneezed a little bit before this though - so it could have been a leak from my bladder.

I just feel stupid to be calling the DR again or going to the hospital this early. I have had so many trips to the OB - hurt knee, back pain, carpal tunnel. I see her or the perinatologist every other week !

Thanks in advance.

So What Happened?

Well, after writing this I started getting cramps in my lower back and my abdomen kep tightening up on me. I finally called the on-call DR and he sent me to the hospital. I got put in a special OB triage instead of the ER. They hooked me up to machines, and decided the cramping was not contractions. They did a speculum exam and found out I had two infections: yeast and bacteria. I also was dehydrated. They also did an US and checked on the babies and the fluid. Everything seemed okay. After a few hours, i was sent home with antibiotics for the infections. They are thinking that I might have just wet my pants. I am still a little concerned because it seemed like such a large amount of fluid and I didn't feel like I needed to pee. However, the DR said that the infection could have caused that.

I have a visit with the perinatologist next Monday (1 wk) and a visit with the OB next friday (1 wk and 4 days). They told me I should be fine until then. I am supposed to take my pills and take it easy. Thanks for your responses.

Is it just a vaginal discharge? It could just be the "snail trail" discharge that comes along with being pregnant. I'm at 13 weeks and I've got it too.

Hello C.,

My sister leaked for days and went to the ER and they "tested" the liquid and told her it was not amniotic fluid and that she was over-reacting. She went to her doctor 2 days later for a follow-up and she was leaking fluid and should have been admitted when she was at the ER. She was told she had a hole in the amniotic sack and the baby can shift to cover it and shift back to expose it which is when the leaking would happen. She was soaking through maxi pads in an hour. GET CHECKED MORE THAN ONCE BY MORE THAN ONE SPECIALIST. She could have had serious complications or an infection but she was VERY lucky. Best of luck!

Never feel bad about calling your DR. I would call and ask for a phone nurse and then if I thought it was serious enough (which this may be), I would ask the phone nurse to leave a message for the DR to call me. Sometimes the DR would give the message to the nurse to relay to me, but several times the answer didn't match the question because there were too many 'middle men' translating my issue. ARG! Very frustrating, but I soon learned to demand to have the DR call me directly when it was a more serious issue. Anyway, I did all of that and only had a singlet! Get bold...it's your body and your babies! As a mother, that talent will be needed so practice now.

Good luck and I hope you're just peeing on yourself and all will be well once the babies are born:)
Congratulations,
B.
P.S. I just read your follow up. For some reason I couldn't see it before. Get on some probiotics to add the good flora/bacteria back into your system. That should help with future yeast infections and help this one to heal. If taking with antibiotics, take the probiotics 2 hours before or after the antibiotics and then continue the probiotics for at least two weeks after the antibiotics are gone. You may want to continue taking them throughout your pregnancy and recovery time, too.

Call the doc and tell them. They'd rather deal with it early than late if you ARE leaking. you HAVE TO HAVE that water in there. if there's a leak, it is an invitation to infection.
It's entirely possible that it's just pee...
From a mom who started with twins....CALL THE DOCTOR. They have a little strip to use (used to anyway). if it turns a certain color (no i don't remember which) then it's the amniotic fluid. if not...you're fine. Wear panti liners in the mean time. DON'T WAIT TO CALL.

I will only say that you should never feel "stupid" for repeated visits to ANY doctor (I have my OB and Pediatrician on speed dial, for crying out loud). Remember, you're their bread and butter. If you owned a store, would you get annoyed with a customer that came in frequently and purchased your products? Hardly!

If you're worried, call your doctor. Simple as that. No amount of embarassment is anywhere near as important as the health of your babies. That's just your pride talking. So you might as well learn this lesson now, because motherhood is about as humbling an experience as you can get. ;)

This is the best way to find out if you are leaking amniotic fluid. Sit on the toilet and bear down as if you are having a bowel movement but hold your anus closed, just push. If nothing comes out, your water has not broken. You would also have a constant flow if your waters are broken, which I actually just remembered my OB telling me that.

I'd definitely call the OB right away. No question is too dumb except the one you don't ask.

There is no such thing as stupid when it comes to the health of the babies. Err on the side of caution always because if you are leaking and do nothing about it you could lose a baby. And then you would never forgive yourself for being afraid of being "stupid".

No question is stupid or a waste of time except those that are never asked. You need to keep in touch with your dr. Being that you are carrying more than one baby it is even more important you contact the dr when you have questions.

I just had twins 5 weeks ago and I had the same experience that you have described. I was always wet, constantly felt like I was dripping. I told my Dr about it and she gave me a test and confirmed that it was not leaking. If you are concerned, you should tell your doctor.

Looking back, I guess it was just extra hormones/mucus. I have had several pregnancies and this was the first that I experienced this. I would just use panty liners all the time. My doctor told me that if it changed to needing to use pads, she would check again (or if other symptoms developed).

I found I was very susceptible to yeast infections as a result of this.
