22 Month Old with HUGE Tonsils!

My 22 month old son's pediatrician had us visit a ENT speciallist due to by sons HUGE tonsils. We went to Dr. Janelle Engle 2 weeks ago and she said the tonsils were definately very large, but he is still a bit too young to have them taken out. He snores so loud, breaths through his mouth off and on, is a very picky eater. The Dr. had us take him off different foods like milk/dairy, wheat, corn, soy, etc., to see if he had a food allergy that was making his tonsils enlarged. We tried and still HUGE! She has us trying him on Singulair for allaergies, so we will see if it helps. Anyone have this issue or can give me some advice on the next step to take?

What can I do next?

Hello,
One of sons had his tonsils and adnoids out when he was 2. The other had his out at 3 both had to have tubes put in their ears. My youngest ears were so bad, that the stuff pushed the tube out of one of his ears and had to be replaced. The Dr. asked me why I had waited so long. So I would ask the Dr why they are waiting? Hope this helps

do research on what the tonsils are used for in the body. they are used to fight infections. My son had large adnoids and cut off his breathing when he layed down to sleep. we had his adnoids removed at 4 or 6 and I told the doc that if the tonsils looked good, to leave them there. He has serious allergy problems and immunity issues at 16. but no tonsil issues. My daughter who is almost 12 would at times get enlarged tonsils causing concern, we would serve warm tang or warm drink to sooth them and they would reduce swelling. I suggest looking for natural ways to reduce swelling and boost immunity. Hope this encourages you.

My son had his tonsils and adenoids out at 2.5 y/o for the same reasons your son is suffering. He snored, had sleep apnea, all that. The surgery wasn't fun and it took him over a week to recover and I felt so bad for him and guilty for putting him through it, BUT, he is now sooooo much better. Sleeps great, eats great, etc. Get it done as soon as possible and he'll never remember the surgery or recovery, and will be much better off. Good Luck!

Our now almost 12 year old son had the same problem as a very young child - like from infancy on - along with overly enlarged adnoids (the doctor said they were the size of golf balls) He (and we) suffered through him having infection after infection - being additionally and overly poisoned by antibiotics until we finally put our foot down about that - at which point just before he turned 5 they finally conceded that he needed them removed. We had to prove to them that he was stopping breathing (sleep apnea) before they would believe that it had been going on for years even though we had been to the doctor several times (at a certain point we just didn't go anymore because all they wanted to do was give him more drugs) but up until then they just pushed us through the system. I strongly suggest that you insist on surgery the sooner the better so your child can get well. Once my son had surgery he did better and better and now he almost never gets sick. Good luck.

i had to chuckle a little when i read the subject of your post. the ENT who removed my daughters adenoids two days ago described them as 'huge' and said that her tonsils were 'huge' as well. he said that it was very likely that they will have to be removed later. i asked him why he wouldn't want to do them all at once. he said he preferred not to take them out on kids under 4. i figured if a surgeon doesn't want to cut, i'm not going to press it. i'm sure you can find an ENT who will remove his tonsils but i'd wait to see what the antihistamines do.

Hi J.,

Unfortunately, I have no answers for you, but I can offer my personal experience. My son always had large tonsils, but with no cases of sore throat or strep throat. He did suffer from upper-respiratory infections (wheezing/croup) a lot more than the average child, but the doctors did not feel these infections were related to his large tonsils. After several tests coming back normal, his doctor agreed that removing his tonsils will be beneficial, while not necessary. When he was almost four years old we opted for the procedure and it went very smoothly. To this day, we have no idea why his tonsils were enlarged and he's a healthy, active six year old. I hope this helps to reassure you a bit.

One of my boys went through the SAME thing. The tonsils came out when he was 20 months old. He stopped snoring, had a growth spurt, and was a MUCH happier little boy after the surgery. If the ENT won't help, see another. My eldest son had swollen tonsils and that doctor wouldn't take those out. He had impaired speech, sleep apnea until age 4.5, and suffered until one tonsil went down at age 5, then the other around age 7. If I knew then what I learned later...

We too have had these troubles. My daughter is now 10 and still has hguge tonsils. The ENT put her on a nose spray for allergies, but it does not affect her. We stopped that and are now using claritin 24 hour. The ENT told us we should avoid surgery as long as we can. She is not having constant infections and this is the key reason to have them removed. We also found out her andenoids are huge. They are causing her breathing problems. We are on a wait-and-see mode right now, but I cna tell you, these do not dissappear.

Kayle too had huge tonsils. She was 2 and I took her to Dr. Arya who said they had to come out. Dr. Arya is with Biltmore Ear Nose & Throat. Maybe you should get his opinion. The surgery was VERY QUICK and although we had to stay one night (because she was so young) everything went smoothly. I was sooo pleased and would recommend having the surgery while he is still this small. Let me know if you want Dr. Arya's number.

Tonsils are part of our immunity system. It would seem that his immunity system is compromised...allergies could do that. I would seek the advice of other natural healers, such as a naturapathic doctor or a herbalist. Removing the tonsils which are merely reflecting that there is something going on within the body, is not a very healthful way of dealing with the problem. That is akin to putting out a fire alarm without putting out the fire, just so one doesnt have to "hear" it anymore. This is the way allopathic medicine works, though. I am relieved the peditrician has considered allergies, but I would not give up on searching for what that is. How long did you you stay away from the possible allergens? It can take up to 4 weeks or longer for an allergen to get completely out of one's compromised system. It often is not easy to discover, but so worth it. I wish you well....I know this is a frustrating thing to deal with. My grandson had an array of different symptoms until they discovered he was allergic to gluten. His cough, rash and loose stools all went away once he got away from the offending foods. The allergen can be something other than food, too. It was a natural, alternative healer who uncovered my grandson's problem...MD's just wanted to put him in the hospital for his persistent cough. All his symptoms were related, but MD's just wanted to treat each individual symptom. I hope this info is helpful. Blessings to you and your son.

There may be something around your area that he is allergic to. I would wait and see if the singulair helps. my son was on that for a little while and it helped a little for his issue. Have you tried running a humidifier at night when he is sleeping to se if that helps with his snoring at night? That might help a little since it is so dry in the valley. I hope this helps a little.
