Well after we finally got our 22 month old to go to sleep on his own in his crib he has now started to climb or fall out.... we have yet to see. We are unsure of what to do. I dont think the crib tent is a very good idea for him. So my question is what has worked for you. I have read that sometimes it is to soon to change to a big bed. His crib turns into a full size bed. So we are considering just putting that up and getting bed rails? I know he wont stay in for a while but at least he would not hurt him self. We have also talked about putting his mattress on the floor? So if you can give me some advice on this matter that would be great!

What can I do next?

We put my little guy in a toddler bed at 15 months (mainly due to me having back issues, and I couldn't lift and lower him in the crib). He did great with the transition. Yes, they do get out of bed more often... but when we put him down, we leave his door open and put a gate up. He might cry for a bit, but then he usually just goes back to his bed to go to sleep. When we go to bed, we close his door.

This has worked really well for us.

Good luck!

I think that you should take him out of the crib. If he is getting out then the crib isn't doing what it is supposed to anyway. I say convert the crib into a toddler bed, or get rails if it is regular bed. Then, make his room completely baby-proof and put a gate on his door, so that he cannot get out of his room in the middle of the night and have free-run of the house. Falling out of the crib is only going to hurt him. This advice is what I did when my 18 month-old's legs kept getting caught in the bars of her crib, I was afraid she was going to break her leg!

I would convert it and just give it a try and if not then you can put it back. My daughter was a few months older when she climbed out of her crib and got her leg stuck in the slits on her way down. I went a bought a toddler bed the next day. It takes a few days to make them stay in there bed but they will soon do it on there own. I just told my daughter to stay in her bed and call mommy if she really needs me and I'll come in there and she still does that at age 4 now, She never gets out of her bed unless I tell her to. Well good luck!

I have two boys. My now 3.5 yo was climbing out of his bed at 15 months, so we lowered his rail and he climbed in and out with no problem. (future rock climber) On his second birthday he got bunk beds. I was 6 months pregnant at this point. At 14 mos now, the baby crawled out of his bed, with the rail up, so we moved him that night to the bottom bunk. At first we took the railing off and set the mattress on the floor and made a bed pit for him. About a month later we put the railing back on and he sleeps better with the bed the way it's supposed to be. Don't get me wrong, it is VERY trying to get him to stay in bed when he is wound up. We just put a baby gate in front of his door so that he can't roam the house in the middle of the night. The second night he slept on the bottom bunk, I found him asleep on the kitchen floor the next morning. That's why we keep the baby gate up! Good luck!

My daughter was around your son's age when we switched her to a regular bed. She has a full size bed with a headboard and a footboard. We put one side of it up against the wall and then bought a bed rail for the other side. We had no problems.

Good Luck

I'd go for an inexpensive toddler bed that will fit his crib mattress. They are good transition beds, when the crib is too small, but the double is just too big. However, every kiddo is different. I have one that HAD to transition from crib to toddler to twin, and another that pretty well jumped from crib to a double w/ very little problem... oddly enough, I just realized- the one that had to transition gave up her pacifer w/ relative ease. The bolder one that had no bed issues- we're still struggling with over paci/ thumb sucking... AND SHE"S ALMOST 5!
Kids are too funny!

I would turn it into the toddler bed. No need in him staying in a crib if he keeps climbing out of it.

buy him a toddler bed. its small just like a crib. i would think that a full size bed would be to big. in fact i have a toddler bed that my toddler uses but we are buying him a twin bed. he will be 3 in july.

I have a 3 yr old boy and a 2 yr old girl and they both were ready at about 18 months. So we moved them to a toddler bed with rails and then at age 2 then no longer needed the rails.

It was a much better option then them climbing out.
My son had started that and I wanted him to be safe.
So we went ahead and moved him. If your crib is one that converts, you might even be able to take the front off,
and leave the rest of the bed, and you can use a rail.

A bed lower to the ground is better than falling if he climbing over.

They both loved going to a big Boy or Big Girl bed and had no problem. Now keeping them in there room is a different subject.

I understand how frustrated you must be after just transitioning him to the crib but I think that once they start to climb out of the crib it is time to put them into a big boy bed. The idea with the bed rails is a good idea. I don't think that 22 months is to early. we had our daughter in a bed around 18 or 20 months and the transition went pretty well. We got her one of those princess beds at toys r us and I remember being so afraid the first time I put her into it that she would roll out of it so I stacked pillows all aound the sides. She was so excited about it that she slept in it the whole night through without any problems. Good luck

We are close to having the same problem you are. OUr 18 mo. old has been very very close to getting out several times. We are in the process of having a babyproofing agency come in and convert his bed to the toddler bed (its just the same crib with part of one rail down so that he can get out if he wants). Anyway, we had to put door top locks on all of his bedroom doors and drawer locks on the drawers and a gate for his bedroom door. Its crazy, I know, but I didn't want him to fall out and break an arm or something. This baby proofer that I am using recommended against the crib tent (due to its total restraint with no way out, even visual) , and recommended the gate on the door entry so that he could see out, but not get out. I think they were good ideas. We will see how it goes. I'm nervous about it, but I figure its what we have to do at this point.
