21 Month Old Waking Every Morning at 4? - Auburn,MA

My 21 month old has been waking up for the past three nights at 4am? She has been a bit stuffy and has cold symptoms, and won't go back to bed after we go up to try and soothe her. I'm wondering if we should let her cry it out or just soothe and hold her because she has been with a cold? She normally sleeps from 7pm to 7am, and I'm nervous she's going to get used to getting up at 4am?

What can I do next?

I say go see what's up with her. If she's waking at 4 there's a reason. 21 month olds don't just pop their eyes open at 4 to get you to let them cry it out.

She may be teething, have an upset tummy, a stuffy nose, had a bad dream, et cetera.

Whatever the case, she needs to be tended to - especially if she's sick.

Perhaps the book, "The Vital Touch" by Sharon Heller will help. Check your local library for it or grab it off of Amazon.com.

Good luck.

Hi C.,
I don't have an answer, I just want you to know you're not alone! My 21 month old has been waking up at 5am for the past 4 - 6 days! He usually sleeps til 6 or 6:30! 5 am is killing me! Especially since my other one sleeps til 7! LOL. Looking forward to the other responses. Good luck with your little one :o)

Both of my kids have gone through spurts where they are up incredibly early. I find that it lasts a week or two and then they go back to normal. I wouldn't let her just cry, because what's the point? You'd be up listening to her anyway, and, as you said, she doesn't feel good. Is she in a bed? If she is, I'd crawl into bed with her, in the dark, and not talk to her, but let her know that you are there. If not, I'd pick her up and sit with her in the dark. At least you'll get some quiet snuggle time before you have to face the day.

Good luck. Hope it passes quickly.

If she is sick then you should go in to soothe her and hopefully it is just the cold that is waking her up. However, here are some helpful tips that may get her back into a better sleeping schedule..good luck!

My 19 month old has been waking up around 4:30 as well the past few days. But her reason I think is because we took the pacifier away and she is learning to sooth herself back to sleep. I go in to check on her and make sure she is ok, turn on her music and she has typically gone back to sleep in about 30 minutes or so. I don't let her scream but she fusses a little bit. I am hoping this will pass and I am sure it will. Good luck!!
