My 2 yr old daughter started showing bumps under the skin of her knees about 2 weeks ago and just 2 days ago, it started itching and scarring. Now its spread almost like a trail onto the upper part of her legs and I'm getting worried. Have any of you mom's experienced this? Any remedies that will help treat it or better yet go away? Any advice is appreciated!

What can I do next?

If the bumps are only on top of the knees and spreading upward and not under the knees or elsewhere on her body, Also eczema usually itches from the start. I suggest that this might not be eczema. Eczema usually starts out on the more tender parts of the body. I agree with S.H. you need to have a doctor look at it to get a definitive diagnosis.

Hi! My 3 year old son started with eczema when he was 3 months old. The thing that I have found that works is the Gold Bond Ultimate Healing lotion with Aloe. This clears his flare ups sometimes overnight. His pediatrician has also prescribed some hydrocortizone cream which I only use when the eczema gets really bad! hope this helps! Its been a miracle lotion for us!

My daughters eczema shows up as mostly flat, scaley, slightly reddened (or very red depending on how bad) patches. Not bumps. She also itches her patches as soon as they are apparent, and hot weather/hot water seems to make it worse (not to mention clothing that could irritate where the patches might be). I mix aquaphor with aveeno ultra moisturizing lotion and lather her up about twice a day. I would take her to the dr, just to be sure it is actually eczema. good Luck!

I have a son with eczema also and I'm not sure that's what it is either. I wonder if it could be Impetigo, my daughter had that and it was hard to diagnose. You need to see a doctor, probably a dermotologist. It could be so many things, infection, poisin oak, bites, hives, allergic reaction to something, etc. You can make a paste out of oatmeal and water, it is very soothing. Good Luck

Take her to the Doctor... to get a proper diagnosis.
2 weeks is a long time and it is now spreading.

My son has had eczema since he was a newborn and the symptoms that you are describing don't quite match up with it. I would take her to a doc to get it checked out just in case its something else... good luck!

MS Nguyen, I have the more serious form of Eczema called Porisis. This is something that a dermatologist needs to look at as many pedi doctors miss it entirely.
My son when he started had only 1 patch but with weeks had spread to his legs. I would tell you what the doctors have told us. Use Dove soap or baby shampoo only for bathing in , keep the skin moist at all times with a good moisturizer or cortisod cream. They sell it at any pharmacy even at WallMart.
Take it seriously as it may not go away.
This can have both a genitic or an emotional cause for getting it. I know we kept myself and our son outside alot as the sun really doees help keep it in control.
Good Luck,Nana GLenda

We cut down on baths, make them cooler temperature when we give them and add a cap full of organic olive oil to the water or to my son's skin after bath. We also noticed a correlation to his breakouts after eating white rice of all things. Pediatrician said no way and white rice is a staple in my husband's culture, but we cut back and wella! No more breakouts (unless we slip up and he eats a big quantity). Good luck.

My 2 year-old son has a mild case of eczema and I went to the pediatrician all paranoid. She recommended when an outbreak occurs- a teaspoon of childrens benadryl and apply to the area hydrocortizone right before bed. In the morning his skin looks better and he doesn't seem to itch as much. She also recommend bath with cetaphil soap and using cetaphil lotion.

Good luck!

I would recommend checking with the doctor to be sure she doesn't have an allergy but Renew....it is a product line by Melaleuca. There is a wash, lotion, oil etc. It is better than the products sold in stores and is not a medication so it does not require a Rx.

Take her to the doctor for a diagnosis. Sounds like it could be scabies which is VERY itchy and spreads in "tracks". It is cured by applying Kwell lotion all over her body overnight.
Best wishes!

With the heat starting, I'd assume first that it's heat rash. My son gets it on his back, but I would think that behind teh knees is a very sweaty place. Is she still wearing heavy pants or bottoms? Try switching to something lighter and maybe no lotion in the morning? Or light sunscreen and sandals with no socks....
If it's spreading and itchy and it's not heat rash or the obvious chicken pox, another thing to look into might be scabbys which generally start in sweaty areas, in between toes, back of knees, inbetween fingers. It's VERY common, even though we all think it's gross, but it's a communicable so they can get it at parks, pre-school, daycare, etc. It's an easy fix to get rid of, with a lotion that you put on twice a day I think for a week or something to that effect.

Good Luck, hope I didnt scare you, but it doesnt' sound like Eczema to me these are just things to look into.

One way to deal with the itching is to apply baking soda watery paste onto the itchy part, it takes away the itch in no time.
Better check it with a doctor, could it be infection ?
Eczema (if it is the case) doesn't usually go away by itself, it is better to deal with it early with the appropriate medicine than to wait it out (never happens...), so that it won't spread, and ultimately you don't have to apply too much medication and for too long...
Unless the cause of the eczema is stress-related; once the stress is gone, even the long-time eczema miraculously disappear... (it happened to me once after I quit my job!)
