2 Yr Old with Lingering Cough

My 2 yr old son has been struggling for about 3 weeks with a cough. He has already completed 2 rounds of different antibiotics (amoxicillin and azithromycin). He's been off of them for 2 days and his cough is worse than ever. It's keeping him from sleeping well and his appetite is poor. I'm doing the Vick's on feet and chest, sudafed vaporcare plugin, humidifier, etc. Anyone else gone through this? He feels fine other than his cough. I guess I need to take him back to the Dr. Any thoughts?

What can I do next?

This may not be the same situation, but sounds close. My daughter will get a cough and at first it is only at night and progressively it moves into our day and gets worse at night; much worse. We have done allergy testing and she has nearly NO allergys, so we have determined it is a reaction to the temperature change. We have to give 2-3 breathing treatments a day when she is like this and that helps. After about 2 days and we don't have to continue the treatments. We did everything you listed that you are doing and this is the only thing that has helped (we eliminated all the other things except occasionally the vicks on her feet). We use the Xopenex in the machine.

Hi H.~
My 3 year old has been going thorugh the same thing for over 3 weeks. At first the cough was the only symptom,no fever present. I took her to the doctor 3 times over the last 3 weeks. She was checked for strep, flu, and even a UTI because she was complaining of abdominal pain every so often. Things took a change for the worse the other night when her fever spiked to 104 and her lips turned blue. Took her to the ER, sure enough, xrays showed a pretty serious case of Pneumonia. If you haven't already insisted, insist on a chest xray at this point. I wish I had earlier. He could have viral pneumonia which doesn't respond to antibiotics but still needs to be monitored closely.I don't think it is unreasonable at this point to request an xray considering his circumstances.
I hope I didn't scare you. Please PM me if you have any questions.

Has the doctor considered allergies or maybe even reflux? My oldest son has had a lingering cough for about a month and was just on antibiotics and cough syrup/antihistamine that knocked it out. I'm not sure which medication did it but it's gone. He also suggested reflux as our next course of treatment.

Hope he feels better...by the way...I love his name. My friend has a Tucker as well.

Hi H., my three year old is going through this right now, but his has been going on much longer. He got a cold in the middle of september and the cough never let up. We also did the amoxicillin and zpack. none worked. The doc has him doing breathing treatments four times a day and has also referred us to a specialist for lung and allergy testing. We are just trying to cover all the bases. I know my son has been going through this alot longer then yours, but I guess the advice is to stay on top of it and make sure the doc does as well. If you think there still a problem take him back to the doc. You know what is best, your the mom.

-lots of sleep
-no chills
-no stress
-no dairy (milk, cheese, whey, casein, etc.)
-no refined sugar
-very limited carbs, including
-no fruit juices

-several hefty pinches of sodium ascorbate throughout the day (buffered, crystallized/powder, most bioavailable form of vitamin c you can get that's also suitable for therapeutic doses, not just supplementation; we get ours from a local health food store and central market carries it too)

You may want to try seeing a pediatric pulmonologist. I don't know your son's history, or what type of cough, but we were there last month with the same thing- constant coughing, round of antibiotic..no difference! We are now on breathing treatments throughout the winter.
I am not sure if your son has any allergies, but mine does. And when he has a reaction, he begins coughing. In addition, your lungs and airways don't like the cold weather; thus, producing in a consistent, lingering cough.
If you want the name of a great pedi. pulm, there is one in Frisco. The wait time in the office is always aweful, but he is awesome! Dr. Rambecki at Kid Lungs in Frisco.
Keep warm and God bless!

I know that my pedi said coughs can linger for weeks and there is not much to do about it. The advice I get the most is use a humidifier. Good luck!
