2 Yr. Old Waking Several Times at Night

My almost-2-yr.-old frequently wakes up multiple times in the night. I think he rolls around and the blankets get twisted or come off of him, which eventually wakes him. All I need to do when he cries is straighten his blankets and he goes back to sleep, but then he just does it again a couple hours later. I often have a hard time falling right back to sleep. I am expecting a new baby at the end of April and I really want my son to sleep through the night, since I'll be getting up every 2 to 3 hours to feed the new baby!

What can I do next?

Keep him warm in a blanket sleeper, this way as he rolls around, and the blanket comes off he won't get cold. To allow for the sense of having a cover a large cotton diaper for coverup, he'll be able to control it since it's light weight and it won't bunch up as much. Hope it works, Good Luck on with s sleep full night.

If the 2 year old is able to fall back asleep quickly I wouldn't worry to much about it. I know you want him to sleep but at this age the majority of the time they will sleep through the night but 10% of the time they do wake up for variuos reasons and you may not always know why. This is one of those sacrifices you will have to make for a short time while you are in this stage.

They do make toddler "big kid" sleep sacks. Target sells them online and they were just on sale. My son is two and wears a 2T/3T right now and they also make 4T/5T. They are nice because they have where their feet can come out so they can walk with them on.

My son is almost 2 and was going through something similar a few weeks ago. It turned out he had an ear infection, but he never really complained. I'd take him in to the doctor, just to double check. With my son I noticed his ear oozing-(after a week of him waking up at night) otherwise I wouldn't have realized. Good Luck! Hopefully it's nothing.

Erin,

We've been dealing with something similar with our 4 yr old. Maybe try putting him to bed 15 mins earlier. We found that our "problem" was our daughter was overtired and not sleeping well. Once we got her down earlier, she doesn't wake at all because she's sleeping deeper.

Another consideration is to put your son in warmer jammies with feet or socks so even if his covers come off he doesn't get cold and wake.

Best of luck!

Skip the blankets all together. If he needs a blanket to fall asleep at first use it until he is asleep and then remove it. Put him in warm cuddley jammies with feet. Our almost 8 year old was always rolling around and still does to this day. Most nights her covers are on the floor, twisted up at the end,,,and it's been like that since day 1. We just started covering her recently....until she was probably 6 we just covered her so she fell asleep then took off the balnkets so she wouldn't get twisted up in them....Good Luck!

Erin, we had similar, but not exact problems with our two, almost 3 yr old, son. It turned out to be enlarged adenoides. Call an ENT in your insurance network. Or I can highly recommend Dr. Jim Schroeder at Children's Memorial in Chicago (also takes appts out in Westchester). I won't go into details about adenoides and the havoc they can wreck on sleep, but either google it or look in Dr. Weissbluth's book which has a chapter about it.
Our son, had his removed about 3 and half weeks ago and the changes have been wonderful. He had trouble getting sufficient air because of his enlarged adenoides and this can cause sleep trouble. About 30% of children have this problem. It is quite common.

you may want to try switching which blanket he is sleeping with, but if that doesn't work then eliminate milk products for 2 weeks and see if that solves the problem. There was a study done in 2002 that children with frequent night wakings actually had a hidden milk allergy and once milk was eliminated the problem was solved. This is what finally worked for my older daughter, but unfortunately I didn't figure that out till she was a week shy of 4 years old!

I would suggest giving the baby Liquid Catnip and Fennel extract. You could mix a few drops into the baby’s formula or juice and it should provide some relief. You may also wish to try rubbing some peppermint oil on the bottom of the baby’s feet. (The soles of the feet are very absorbent and this is a good delivery system for the beneficial effects of the oil.) It's all natural it will not harm the baby.

Hope this helps,
