2 Yr Old Daughter Not Eating After Being Sick

My daughter was sick over the weekend...throwing up Saturday & Sunday, then diarreah Mon & Tues. She is definitely feeling better and getting back to her old self, but she is not eating. She asks for food and then won't eat it. She will eat a little bit during the day, but NOTHING for dinner. This is the first time she has been sick like this, so I am just wondering if this is normal. Will her appetite just come back gradually? Should we not push it? She was a somewhat picky eater before she got sick, so I just want to make sure she is not working us to her advantage (ha ha!) Any advice is appreciated!!! Thank you!

What can I do next?

I think it's common for kids to ease back into eating after they are sick. Make sure she's getting fluids. The rule in our house is when you're sick you get to eat whatever you want--popsicles for breakfast even! LOL

Does the pediatrician know about this? My girl threw up so much too and she had food poisoning. The ped said it could be stomach virus that entails vomitting, diarrhea, and will take about 5 days to get out of system. She recommended to start with sips of pedialyte, moving on to liquid diet (jello, chicken broth, juice), and some safer solids that calms GI tract like crackers, toast, etc. No milk or "heavier" things for a few days until she is much better. Given your daughter has finished the bouts by Tues, maybe she is telling u she is not really ready to fully eat yet? She eats a little bit during the day but when the GI tract is still upset, perhaps by dinner she still feels full? I would not push it since she is at least eating during the day. Watch for her energy level. If she is usual self, and just less appetite at night, I think it is ok. But if it is prolonged then I would do something about it.

Aww, poor thing. It is so hard to see your baby throw up and poop out! I would stay calm (but be crying inside) when she was doing those so I can imagine how you feel.

Completely normal. As long as she is getting plenty of fluids, she will eat when she is hungry. Don't push. My son just ate a good meal for the first time in over a week due to an illness. I know exactly how you feel!

Just make sure she stays hydrated, and she should go back to normal. When my son had this sort of thing, the ped said to focus on fluids and not solids. She said anything that would keep him hydrated -- slurpees, popsicles, sonic ice chips, pedialyte, broth, etc -- were a-ok. You can survive a heck of a lot longer whithout food than you can without water. A heck of a lot longer actually. Just try and keep her full of fluids, maybe some soups? If she's not better by next week, give your ped a call to see if they have any suggestions. Good luck!

Honestly, give her anything she wants. She is prob afraid she will throw it up hence why she is not eating. Yogurt with the pro biotics, pops, etc....
