2 Yr Old Blinking... a Lot!

My daughter will be 2 the end of September. She has recently, for about three weeks now, started blinking on-and-off a lot. At first I thought it was because she was trying to wink - she is blinking a lot like she did when she tried to wink like an animal was in one of her books (most time with a pointed scrunchy face)... but now she just does it a lot of the time.

Sometimes she doesn't do it for hours. Then, all of a sudden she is doing it again. So much that my family and friends have asked me if she is okay.

I keep brushing off everyone's concerns, thinking she is just doing it because it is new and she just learned how... but with the length of time it's been now, I myself am wondering if something might be wrong... any ideas?

Thank you!

Hi N.,
Please talk to your pediatrician. My friend's daughter was also blinking a lot and they found out it was because she was having seizures. The blinking was the only obvious physical sign. I don't mean to scare or upset you, but the fact is you may save yourself and your daughter much trouble and time if you bring up the subject with the pediatrician. It took my friend a long time to figure out why her daughter was struggling at home and at school. Her daughter is doing great now with medication and is much safer now that she has been diagnosed.

Best wishes to you and your family.

A few years ago, a friend's son was doing this. He was a bit older though and my friend told me the doctor told her it was a nervous tick, probably caused by stress. His sister had been going through some major medical problems, so he may have been worried or feeling neglected about that.

Your daughter's habit may just be a habit, but if its been going on for awhile, take her to the doctor. It could be one of a number of things, or nothing at all. Good luck.

This was an issue w/ my 6 year old in the late winter, early spring. At first I thought it was habit and would go away. After a month or so of his blinking, I took him to see the pediatrician to get checked. My thinking was his eye sight or a blocked tear duct. The eye sight didn't make sense since he had been tested very recently w/ no problem. The pediatrician prescribed eye drops and said it was allergy related and he was too old to have tear duct problems, as would be the case for your daughter. Tear duct issues, as I was told by the pediatrician, occur when the child is an infant up to 6 months old. Since we've given my son the eye drops the blinking has not gone away totally, which I just think he got used to blinking, but he's not doing it nearly as much! Allergy season has been horrible this year, even for those who never had allergies this time of year. It may be the case for your daughter too. Good luck!!!

I would talk to the pediatrician...i also think it could be neourological. Does she have any headaches? She could be seeing spots or flashing lights??

My son's best friend just went thru his. It turned out for him that he has dry eyes and needs to use drops. The opthamologist suggested allergies or that it could be a tick (from something nuerological). I think it's worth talking to your ped about. It's probably not anything serious, but you'll feel better if you get some reassurance. Good luck!

It's a "nervous tick" - I did the same thing when I was a kiddo, although I think I was a little older. It's not really because she's nervous ... it just becomes a habit... like some people bounce their legs up and down when the sit at a table? or ... anyway, my mom's ped. told her it was nothing to be concerned about and to not even bring it up, it would fade on its own. And it did. Mom's not sure how long it lasted, but months, not years :)

Have you taken her to an eye doctor yet? If not, I would have her checked out to be on the safe side. My son had odd habits with his eyes and it turned out that he had really bad vision.

My 6 year old daughter was complaining of headaches this past year and also blinking alot too. Low and behold after a trip to the pediatrician, blood work and scheduling an MRI...the local eye doctor prescribed glasses because her focus muscle is weak. My mom is a pediatric nurse and by habit I always err on the side of caution with things like this! It could just be a new cute and corky thing thatyour daughter has picked up on. I do think that a phone call to your doctor could put your mind at ease. Best Wishes.

One of mine went through a phase of blinking. We'd hold things and ask if he could see them ok and ask him about his eyes hurting, but never discovered anything. We never did figure it out, but it stopped without an intervention and hasn't returned.

My sister's son used to do that when he was younger. As he got older she just made him aware of what he was doing and he would consciously try to stop. He now never does it anymore. She figured it was related to stress.

Sometimes this can be a sign of fatigue in a child but it can also be what they call a "tick". I would definitely have her checked out to try and rule different things out. It may be nothing but I wouldn't wait to find out.

Hi N.,
The same thing is happening to my daughter! She will be 2, at the end of the month. I called the Dr. office, and they said it might be tick that she has, and nothing to worry about. It may just be a phase. I take her for her 2 year checkup at the end of the month, so I will see what they say then. It sounds the same, she just started doing it a couple of weeks ago too, and is doing it more and more. It may be something that they picked up somewhere and will out grow it. Hope that helps.

You probably have a well-visit coming up soon. I'd discuss it with your pediatrician. Maybe it's nothing--or it may be a sign of allergies or maybe a blockage of her tear duct(s)? Or maybe it just a new cool thing she knows she can do!
