Hey Y'all,

My daughter had a little bump that looked like what I thought was a pimple on her head, and than it got bigger. My husband thought it was a wart. We left it alone and hoped it would go away. It does not seem to bother my daughter at all. Later it dried up and flaked off, and took a spot of hair with it in a clump, so she had a itty bitty bald spot. We figued that was the end of it, and the hair grew back in a couple of days, Now, 2 months later the whole area is flakey and scaley looking, like super dry skin, and that sore is back! it flakes off and reappears all the time! It does not bother her, and it is not noticable to anyone except me since I comb and wash her hair and know it's there. If I scratch at it, the skin peels off really easy and takes the hair with it. But the skin underneath is new and the hair grows back ialmost instantly. I don't know what it is or how to get rid of it! I tried wahing her hair with shampoo for dry scalp, and I tried using lots of conditioners and No conditioner at all. I've tried Alveeno bath soaks for kids with exzemma. It's not helping. Does anyone have any suggestions? I know I can take her to a skin specialist, but we are trying to avoid the cost if it is something we can do ourselves, and as long as it doen't bother her, we feel we have soem time to figure it out. It bugs me most of all!
Thanks moms!

I thought it sounded a bit like ringworm too. It could be that or it could just be a weird patch of dry skin. Ringworm is not a worm at all but a fungus, so that's why the antifungal cream works like a charm! It is usually round with a bit of a raised red edge and flaky in the middle. It is pretty contagious and can spready easily so just be careful!

It sounds like psoriasis. My daughter had it at 4 years. It is rare to get ringworm on the scalp. Usually it is a hand or something as you can get ringworm from cats so it shows up where you touch the animal at. You can take her to a regular doctor first and get his recommendation. My daughter is now 14. She uses a tar shampoo (which smells exactly what it sounds like). Neutragena has a nice one.

Psoriasis you can look up online - especially in the scalp and in children to see if the scales (the name for what you are seeing) are the same. It really does not bother them and if it is psoriasis you may also see it on her elbows, knees, eyelids in the future. The medications that are out there for psoriasis are very strong and most are given only to adults.

One of the treatments is making sure to get enough UV rays. But this will be something that is lifelong, unfortunately, not something that goes away and it is not harmful, not contagious, winter months are usually the worse as she will be inside more. You are welcome to contact me offline.

I'm guessing it's a form of psoriasis or excema. It might just clear up-sometimes those things get worse at different times of the year.

You could try a product called SCALPICIN-look for it near the Head and Shoulders type shampoos. You just put it directly on the spot. Or try tea tree oil-that helps psorias too. I'd start there and unless it spreads or bothers her I would just watch it for now.

My 3 year old little boy got that this year. Like you said-it would flake off and take the hair with it but didn't seem to bother him. Anyway here is how I solved it.
I quit using shampoo and conditioner all together. I instead use a mix of baking soda and water to make a paste and use this to cleanse and exfoliate the scalp. Then you rinse with Apple Cider vinegar. This is fun for them because it will "fizzle" and foam up. Then you rinse thouroughly with water. I only use this about 1-2 times per week. The rest of the time I just rinse and rub with water. This will completely clear it up in a week or so not to mention she will have gorgeous shiny hair. I also use this method on my hair from time to time to remove any residue from hair products. It will make is really shiny. I know several families who only use the baking soda and never buy shampoo. Definitely cheaper than a skin specialist!
I also use a few drops of tea tree oil and/or lavender oil to the paste. Tea tree will clear up any skin condition and lavender is very soothing.

I second the tar shampoo. My son had one spot like that one year and we did tar shampoo for a year or so and never had it again. Good luck!

It might be a fungal/parasitic infection. I'd go to her regular pediatrician first.

I don't know about the sore, but my 7 year-old had an area on his scalp a couple of months ago that was EXTREMELY scaly, dry and flaky. I had never seen anything like it, but used Selsum Blue (not sure I spelled that right) one time, and it was gone! I was amazed that it worked in one application. It does say, however that it can be reapplied I think once or twice weekly. I don't know if it has anything in it that would irritate the sore spot on your little girl's scalp, but you could ask a pharmacist, and if not, it would definitely be worth a try. Good luck!!

My son has had continued problems with his scalp that sound similar. I tried head & shoulders shampoo & selsum blue and washed his hair everyday with them. Neither one was working and the hair stylist said it was most likely plugged oil ducts and to try to keep it clean or he could get bald spots that don't grow back. I switched him to my shampoo, Biolage, Normalizing Shampoo, which is for Normal to Oily hair and good for the scalp and it cleared up, I scrubbed his head pretty good with my fingernails this first couple of times, like I had been doing with the dandruff shampoos but now it is all cleared up and I can go 3-4 days without washing his hair sometimes, and it still stays cleared up. He is almost 6 years old but had had the problem off & on for a couple of years, I had asked drs & hair stylist, then I thought to try oily hair shampoo on him and it worked. It is worth a shot to try an oily hair shampoo to see if it helps. I hope it helps, good luck!

Obviously, I have no idea what your child has, but my son had psoriasis (and it sounds similiar). He outgrew the worst of it as he got older, but really he still has it. When he turned 2, I gave him a buzz haircut and that helped a LOT. Generally, he keeps the buzz cut except in deep winter. But this year, he really started having trouble with his scalp again at the beginning of December, so I gave him the option of having a buzz cut in the winter and he wanted it (which means the scalp was really bothering him). Unfortunately, you can't really do that with a girl. Anyway, the doctor told me to use Selsom Blue. I also talked to several docs about it and they said to NOT use any of the medications because they have steriods in them and they don't know what the long term impact is on putting steroids on a child's head (I'm talking about the scalpcion..(SP?) medicine).

Good luck!

Try tea tree oil. If it is a fungus it will clear it up.
