2 Yo and Taming "Bedhead"

My two year old has very fine wavy hair. The hair every girl wants- long and hangs in beautiful ringlets. She looks like a princess when she goes to bed at night. However, every morning single morning she wakes up with the biggest bird's nest on the back of her head. Just one big ball of tangle. What an awful mess to try and comb through on a sleepy toddler each day before preschool- not to mention the fact that she HATES anyone messing with her hair. I wash it about 2-3 times a week with Burt's Bees shampoo, and follow up with California Baby conditioner, which helps very little. I've tried detangler. I trimmed the ends up a little. Nothing helps! Suggestions? Tricks? I don't wake up with a head of hair like this. She must just thrash her head around all night!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I'll try the satin pillow with her. And I'll definitely look at getting a detangling brush. I have tried leave-in conditioner, but her hair is so fine, it looks almost greasy when it's dry. She won't let me put anything in her hair- any bands or clips are pulled out immediately. All this gorgeous hair, and I don't even get to doll her up. :(

I'd say keep a spray bottle of water with a few drops of Tea Tree Oil on the table in reach of the brush. I use this each morning to get the kids ready for school. The water allows the hair to comb easily and look tidier and the Tea Tree Oil makes the hair less appetizing to head lice and it also coats the hair the tiniest bit to make it less fly away.

I use a 6oz or 8oz bottle and change it out every other day so it won't grow mold or mildew inside.

I heard that silk pillow cases can help. Perhaps braiding her hair?

Two suggestions, first, get satin sheets, or just satin pillowcase, the hair slides on it and tangles less. Also for brushing, they sell special brushes for detangling that make it much easier on you, and her. Try googling it, the no tangle brushes, there was a commercial for one on tv the other day.

Use a leave in hair conditioner or shine serum.
I like the "Garnier Fructis" brand.
So does my daughter.

Or, put her hair in a pony tail, before bed.
My daughter sleeps with a pony tail, it prevents her hair from tangling during sleep.

Also use a de-tangler brush or comb.
My daughter's detandling brush, is from Sephora. Look online. It is WORTH the price.

Get her a satin pillowcase. That helps prevent tangles. And, you could braid her hair every night.

My boys' hair looked liked that when they woke up. I bought a spray bottle of "Bedhead" and used it on them. That worked, but their hair was short. If I were you, I'd try the other ideas.

Braid it before she goes to be. Works like a charm.

Oh I can't wait til I have this problem...my 2yo is still pretty bald (but it's finally coming in!). I rocked a perm when I was little (80s child!) and my mom would usually braid my hair before bed. If she won't sit still long enough for a french braid, even just a low pony braid would work well.
Otherwise a good detangler and a wide toothed comb.

We use Aveda's smoothing fluid.... my 2yo DD has fine, thin, DRY, nordic like hair that balls up in a rat's nest on the back of her head if you look at it twice - in the carseat, laying down, etc etc. We put this stuff on in the morning and it makes it SO MUCH EASIER to comb out (no tears!). Also, at night when I know she's mouth breathing and will be drying out and is prone to create those things on the back of her head. I also use a baby shampoo from FairyTales that seems to help too. I do plan to braid her hair at night as soon as its long enough. Good luck!

At 2 years she might be a little young for pillows as such - but if you can find a satin mattress cover or even satin pillow it may help. Also - try braiding the hair loosely in just 2 braids. My kid spins around all night in her sleep - so her hair comes up looking crazy ! It's always much nicer when I braid it down for the night.

Satin pillow cases and spray-on detangler or mousse or gel or water in the morning before combing, something that won't weigh it down, read labels. Fine, wavy hair needs a lot of tricks. My guy is almost 4 and has the most beautiful hair, but there's no way I can comb it dry in the morning. Spray or apply whatever you're using, (mousse or gel in your hands to rub it around and warm it first) comb through, then scrunch her hair to bring out the ringlets, I did this for years with one of my granddaughters. As she gets older you'll want to use shampoos, conditioners and treatments that specifically add volume and try braiding her hair at night before bed.

When she fusses tell her she's a princess (the satin cases) and that you're doing her "princess" hairdo. Or whatever she relates to. My guy has been into Jake and the Never Land Pirates about a year now, if he wants to bolt before his hair is done I tell him his "pirate" hair isn't done and he settles right down ;)
