My oldest daughter, Riley, turned 2 in february. My parents had us keep her on baby food way too long and now she just expects to swallow everything. We have been trying to get her on regular food but its hard because we are limited to things that wont choke her if she doesnt chew them well like scrambled eggs. I really want to feed her things like grilled cheese but the one time we tried that she got choked because she kept trying to swallow it whole. I have been trying to tell her "Chew" and make chewing like motions with my mouth and sometimes she will chew but rarely. I dont know what to do. anyone else have this issue?

What can I do next?

Maybe try giving her graduates food... Like puffs or stuff like that. They dissolve, so she won't actually choke on it... but she can practice on more solid things. You might also try making her some chunky applesauce, or softer fruits that CAN be swallowed whole, but are big enough to encourage chewing.

That said... My DD is 11 months old, and has been on solid table foods for the last 3 months. She chews very well. She has had a few 'choking' incidents, but she took care of them on her own. I only intervene if she can't gag it up on her first or second try. (Pediatrician told me it is important to allow them to try to clear the obstruction on her own, but NOT to let her actually get to the scary choking point...)

There should be an early childhood program in your area. They will do a free eval. If she qualifies for feeding therapy, that should be free also up until she is 3 years old. But they may be able to just give you tips to solve the problem.

I would introduce her to finger foods meant for younger kids. My 2 yr old chews, but likes to shove a lot in her mouth, so we cut things up small and give her small portions.

It might not hurt, too, to consult a food therapist. She may have an aversion to textures and if you don't get it resolved, she could have a lot of issues going forward. You also need to find out, IMO, if it was just the baby food or if she has other issues (maybe a physical jaw or tongue problem) that also needs to be resolved.

She will learn to chew by having the negative experience of choking on food. Give her the food that needs to be chewed so that she will learn to chew.

Choking is not dangerous because you are there to raise her arms or pat her back when she can't clear it herself. Her throat is mature enough to manage the choking on her own most of the time.

my son was on baby food until he turned one, but i was so afraid of the same thing (him choking w table food) but before i gave him table food, when he was around six months, i started giving him gerber puffs or gerber cookies (the soft ones that almost melt in your mouth) i believe that has helped him to learn how to move the food with his tongue. Now at 17 months he will bite on food and move it around and chew like he's suppose to, but i still watch him bc sometimes he takes really big bites. Maybe you can give your daughter some gerber puffs, just an idea. it won't hurt her

Sugar free chewing gum. We had this problem and he wanted to chew gum like mommy and big sisters so we would bite of little bitty pieces and tell him if he chewed it and did not swallow he could have more and talked about how he had to chew his food like the gum so it would not get stuck and it worked.
