2 Year Old Playing in His Stools

My son who is 22 months old likes to take off his diaper even when it is a little bit wet. But two times now he has taken his diaper off during/after a bm and then smearing it on the walls and carpet. What should I do? Is it time to start potty training him? I never had this problem with my first son.

What can I do next?

For my son HE was the canvas not so much the walls and such, what stopped it, an it equally sucked for both but it was the only thing that stopped it ,was a COLD shower to clean him off with. I started with a decent temp but that did noting after the second cold shower he never touched his poop again.

My friend put duct tape on his diaper tabs so he couldn't get it off.

I sent a question out just a few months ago about the same thing! My son played with his trucks in it!! It is a PHASE and he will stop when the novelty wears off. I bought onesies at Babies r Us that fit him and he wasn't able to get his diaper off. But, I did proceed to potty train him during this time. He did great! Good luck and try to be patient!

Icky, icky, but totally normal. I remember one time it being smeared down every railing in the crib, and on the wall. It was really hard to clean the poop out of their little fingernails after such a piece of artwork.

I LOVE the cold shower idea from Kristina M and wish I this site would have been around for me back then.

NOT TOTALLY NORMAL. I had a daycare little boy that would do that, and his parents refused to potty train him. I had to terminate him from my daycare cause he did it 4 times here, two or three times at home no discipline whats so ever. Children have died from ingesting other child's bm, he was in the play pen when he did it here I had to bleech it out every time and then it was ruined, he got bm on the carpet, I had crawling babies. NOT ACCEPTIBLE. I had 3 children and they never played in their poop, of course by 22 months they were already potty trained, and in 13 1/2 years of doing daycare, i only had one child do this. So normal? I don't think so. J.

um......i'd watch him more closely and when you catch him in the act, slap his hand or something...that can be dangerous to him if he puts his hand in his mouth and to the family if the bacteria from bm gets in the air which it probably does

My son did this once and he was 22 months old. He learned how to unzip his pj's and take off his diaper. My other two boys did not do this and one was trained at 2.5 yrs and the other was trained at 3 yrs. So, I don't think it is a signal to start potty training. I just think it is a signal that they know how to undress themselves. When it happened, I researched the Mamapedia site and found a GREAT solution: Cut off the feet of the pj's and put the pj's on backwards. I put him in a foot-less blanket sleeper for nap and overnight and I have not had any further bm exploration problems.

Also, don't stress over whether or not this normal or abnormal behavior. Every child is different and offers a different set of challenges to their parents. If you do not have a poop exploring baby, then great...but you may have a child that has another difficulty which puts you at your wits end. Keep everything in perspective and smile through the good times and breath through the bad.

Go buy some blanket sleepers, cut the feet off and put them on backwards. Good luck!

my kids didn't do this. but i've heard of many that have
i would think... a need to be creative. give him play dough and paint.
and a need for control? put a potty in the living room and leave it up to him if he wants to use it. i guess then you have your answer : )

honestly ever 2 yr old i have ever known has done this. including both of my boys. i actually asked the doctor about it and she said it is very gross but he will out grow it. he stopped by the time he was around 2.5 or 3. just wash his hands good and if he eats it (gross) brush his teeth REALLY good.
