Vicks on his feet covered in socks and a cool mist humidifier. That's what we do at my house and it works.
Good luck!
By the way, my husband is a stay at home dad too!
My son, whose 2, has been coughing at night for the last few weeks. I think it could be allergy/sinus related. We took him to the doctor and there's nothing wrong with him. Other than giving him honey at night, is there something else out there that would help? He's seems really tired in the mornings because of him coughing at night. Thanks.
Thank you to everyone who has responded with suggestions. I tried the vicks on his feet last night and he didn't cough once last night. I'm so happy that he slept through the night. Thanks again.

My 4 year old has been coughing at night for the past few days too. I put a little mentholatum (sp?) ointment (i.e., Vicks Vapor Rub) on his chest and neck and the coughing almost stops instantaneously. Read the label for age restrictions 'cause I'm not sure if there are any or not. But that works really well for us.
Good luck!
Try putting vicks on his feet and put socks on him. I tried that with my little girl and it worked. Hope this helps!
Hello H.,
Here are a few things you can try:
1) try putting a pillow under his mattress so his head will be elevated and help w/ any drainage.
2) Essential oils are very effective:
on a tissue put:
5 drops peppermint oil
2 drops rosemary oil
1 drop basil oil
put that tissue in his room (on a glass or metalic plate) and where he CANNOT reach it. (make sure you get rid of it within 24 hours because it doesn't smell good after a day or two) just make a new tissue.
You can get the oils at sprouts, whole foods, etc.
wash his bedsheets and pjs w/ dreft. no softener, no bleach, etc.
for the next couple days try the following:
don't burn candles, no air fresheners
bathe him in the morning instead of at bed time.
no milk at night (builds phlem and can make him cough)
Good luck! ~C.~
I don't know how bad it is, so here is our regimen when it is seriously interfering with sleep:
Children's Musinex: my 30lb 3 year old takes 1/2 teaspoon every four hours throughout day
Children's Benadryl: also 1/2 teaspoon only at night
Vicks on the feet with socks
My daughter has something like Reactive Airway Disorder that flares up with the temperature/barometric pressure changes in the weather and she has asthmatic type coughing that occurs. This requires three breathing treatments of Xopenex for about 3-5 days to give her relief. If your child has been coughing for 'weeks' something is going on. If it is allergy related, I would be sterilizing his room: curtains, bedding, carpets to see if it is in his room....
I know how frustrating this is; I would seek a doctor that will help you find out what is causing this...if you need a pedi referral, I love mine.
Ditto. VIcks rub with socks on. For some reason this works at night and not much help during the day if some one if coughing all the time.
Hi H.-
My 2 yr old son has the same problem with allergies/sinus problems. His doctor put him on Singular but he still gets a cough every now & then so the doctor told me to give him Pediatric Robitussin at night. My son weighs about 30lbs. so his dr. said to give him a 1/2 teaspoon. It usually takes a couple of days for it to get better but it does. The triaminic didn't help him at all. Good Luck & I hope your son gets better soon.
Try a humidifier. Also, ask you're pedi for dosage on a good cough medicine. He isn't too young for it as long as you get the ok from his doctor.
Run the humidifier at night too. If you don't want to do or can't the Vick's on the feet - my son refuses to sleep with socks or footie pjs, get one of those plug ins from the kids medicine aisle. Both will help loosen it up also make sure he's getting plenty of water during the day it helps things stay a little looser.
