2 Year Old Birthday - Smash Cake or Just Regular?

For our little guy's first, we did a smash cake and then I ordered a "regular" cake for the guests. This year, I am debating on ordering just one big cake and just giving him a piece, or doing another smash cake just for him. What did you do for your little one's second?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Great, thanks moms! I guess I never thought about the "manners" thing, simply bc none of my kids every dug in and smashed their cake anyway! They just picked a little at it and ate a little later like "normal". Made for boring videos/pics =) And I believe we did regular cake for the older two, but I cannot for the life of me remember.

Our family only does a smash cake at 1. It's just not as cute at 2 and as the previus poster stated they start learning manners by 2.

No smash cake after 1. They're old enough to start learning manners at 2 and you don't want to start an unhealthy tradition.

Wow, never even heard the term "smash cake" though it was easy to figure out. I would not do it. By two he should be learning how to eat properly. And two is an age where if you make an exception -- clapping and cheering for the act of smashing up food "just this once for fun" -- he is not going to understand that the approval was one-time-only; he would be very confused when, at the next meal after you cheered him for smashing a cake, you're saying, "No, we don't put our hands into our food."

I guess from the postings on here that the "smash cake" is some kind of tradition for some folks but I had never seen it or heard anyone refer to it. Glad my kid is way past that age!

I'd give him the first piece but not his own cake.

It's cute for a 1 year old to enjoy playing with their cake but any older than that looks tacky.

For my daughter's second bday, we did cupcakes. I've found that kids that age don't really eat a whole piece of cake anyway and it's less waste and more fun for them to have their own little cupcake. Especially if you're inviting other young children to the party. That way, moms don't have to sit there and feed their kids cake. Just sit them down with a cupcake and let them enjoy it.

Happy birthday to your little man! (and happy Halloween!)

At age 2, isn't your child a little old to be smashing cake? Just order one cake for all. We had a Tinkerbelle sheet cake for birthday #2.
