2 Potty Training Questions

My 2 1/2 year old son isn't really into potty training yet, which is fine for now, but I was wondering about these 2 things:

Do/did you use a 'training potty" or just the regular toilet with a potty cover? I just didn't want to clean another potty, so I have him using the regular toilet, which is what they use at his school (of course they have shorter toilets, not sure where they got those!)

And

Do/did you train your boy to stand and pee or sit and pee? I've started with the sit and pee, just to save my walls, but is it easier to train with the'stand and pee' method? Sometimes he's there forever sitting until something happens (on the few rare occasions I get him on the potty)

Thanks for your help!

What can I do next?

I have a 4 yr old that was trained with our toilet and a seat to go on top. Originally I taught sitting down and with time he wanted stand like his dad. My 2 yr old went right to standing from the get go since he see's both his dad and bro do that. My suggestion is when the time comes to feel him out what he feels comfortable doing. He will let you know. Good luck!

I would train him to sit first...I like the seats that sit on top of the regular potty seat...it's easier(in my opinion as a mother of 5 little boys, 4 of which are trained)to teach them to sit at first...that way you don't have issues with # 2...also try to stay away from public potties that flush automatically until your son is feeling really confident-the automatic flushing has been known to cause "trama" when mommy who is holding said child moves the wrong way and the thing flushes while he's on it...myself as well as a friend of mine figured that one out the hard way! Also,I would figure out your sons schedule...you probably know when you change most of his diapers...so a little before then put him on the potty...if you know when he usually goes(I have one that pees @1030 without fail) then you can eliminate the long sitting time...definitely first thing in the morning...when you want to teach him to stand you can throw cherrio's in the potty for him to aim at...and I would when the weather gets warmer put him in shorts with underwear...once it runs down his leg once or twice he'll start getting interested(I recomend this for outside time...save the furniture). GOODLUCK!

C.,
I also have a 2 1/2 year old boy (arent they wonderful!)
He is also not potty trained yet but he has used the potty before (like you, provided i get him at the right time which is starting to be a rare occasion)
He has his own potty because i found a really great one for boys from baby bjorn and I just feel that is what will work well for my son
He is being trained to pee sitting for now and since the potty has a built in painfree splash guard I never had a mess with that. when he is fully trained (one day) and older then I'll have hubby show him how to pee standing up.
Good luck

After my daughter gave us a hard time transitioning from the potty seat to the big potty I threw them out because I didn't want to have to go through more trining for the big potty.

So my son was trained on the big potty. We just had a stool there at all times. We did the sit & pee first. It just made sense to me as a women and my hubby had no real hand in the training - unforunately! So I just instructed my son to "point the 'dude' into the pot" and it worked well. When he was almost 4 we tried to get him to stand as he could now reach without a stool. He didn't want to until he accidently walked in on his friend peeing while standing so he wanted to do it. And he did. Yeah, his aim isn't the best, but it isn't on the walls, just the rim, so i can deal with that. HTH!

I have 2 boys; I always left it up to them if they wanted the toilet or the potty. My 1st wanted nothing to do with the potty but the 2nd likes it. I again leave it up to them, how ever they are the most comfortable just as long as they go on the pot and not in pants. My first sat my second goes back and forth between the 2.

Dr Phil’s potty training method really works.
