2 Month Vaccinations - Change in Daytime Sleep Patterns

With my daughter I saw no issues with vaccinations, so now that I have my son who just had his 2 mos vaccinations I am curious if anyone else has seen this. Today (vaccinations were yesterday around 10am) he did not sleep much at all. When he did sleep it was for no more than 45 mins at a time, and prior to vaccinations he would sleep a couple hours in the morning and up to 4 in the afternoon. Just curious if anyone else has seen this and how long it may go on.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all so much for your great responses! I really appreciate it. This morning he already seems to be going back to normal. I guess mom paranoia got the best of me! It is crazy how two children from the same parents can be SO different. I guess it just proves that just because you did it once doesn't mean you really know what you are doing! Thanks again!

I don't personally think that sounds normal, even if it is considered a "normal" reaction to vaccines. I would consider spacing them too at very least, I've gotten good information on vaccines and diseases at www.thedoctorwithin.com

If you are seeing any kind of reaction at all, you might want to consider spacing out the next vaccinations and only doing one at a time. That way you can have clear information about which vaccinations (if any) he is reacting to.

Keep excellent records of what you observe. Write them down. Kids do recover from most vaccine reactions. If things are steadily improving, don't worry. My son recovered just fine from a mild reaction to the tetanus vaccine. We delayed the next shots significantly, worked on strengthening his system, and had no further problems.

yes, this happened when my daughter was about 7 yo, that night after her shot, she woke up at about 10:30, came out of her room all spacy and weird. She did that for a month or more straight. I have not gotten either her or my son further shots since. And I'll mention that she is now almost 12 and has had perfect attendence from kindergarten to the last month of 4th grade so she is rarely sick and has not even thrown up since she was a baby.

Please don't leap to any assumption that this is some negative reaction to the vaccine itself. He is only two months old and was poked with something sharp. Of course he's disturbed. But be aware, his sleep patterns will change and change and change agaiin from now until....he's an adult. Many mamas are way too quick to attribute every tiny alteration to the most recent vaccine and that makes them question or even abandon vaccines. Babies switch up their sleep if they have a tiny fever from a shot, if they have gas, if they are too hot, if they are too cold, if they were startled by a loud noise just before naptime....He only had the shot yesterday. Of course it'll affect him. But it will change, just maybe not back to that ideal long, long napping--and that won't be because of a shot. Expect lots of changes, some of them temporarily attributable to a shot, or an exam that made him cry, or a bad feeding where he had too much gas, or....many things. If you're worried ask the pediatrician.

Think about how a tiny paper cut can be so painful to an adult. Now think about your little baby having a needle poke him, a needle that is MASSIVE to a tiny baby. He will probably be sore for a few days. I know that I don't sleep well when I am in pain.

I do seem to recall naps being shorter after vaccinations, and my babies being fussier for a couple of days. My youngest is 3 now, so it's been a little while since I had a 2 mo. I would think tomorrow or the day after, he'll start to nap like he used to.

I did see this in my little guy, but not until he was 6 months so i was really surprised as he'd done so well the previous times. He seemed restless and unable to sleep well for about 3 days, but didn't seem to be in pain or run any fever. I checked the information sheet my pediatrician gave me and it was one of the possible side effects. I hope your son will be back to his usual sleeping schedule soon : )

Babies/Children can behave differently after vaccinations. Because your baby's behavior was different the very next day after his vaccine, that seems typical to me. If his abnormal sleep patterns continue, then I would get worried. Good luck!

He may have a fever. Sometimes babies can get fevers from their 2 month vaccines. My 2 month old just had her's the 19th of May. She woke up crying a few times and we had to give her medicine for her fever. The nurse told us it is a specific one in the 2 month vacs that cause the fever in a select few. I would suggest going to your local walgreens or pharmacy and ask them what they recommend for fever for a 2 month old. Good luck!
