2 Month Old Boy Always Hungry

I am formula feeding my 2 month old son, and he seems to have a HUGE appetite. He was almost 9 lbs at birth and is growing fast (he is already about 12 lbs). He is a big boy but does not look like he is chubby or overweight. At his 1 month check-up, the doctor told me to feed him 3 oz every 3 hours but that didn't work for long. I am already feeding him 5 oz every 3 hours. He won't go longer than 3 hours during the day, and a 4 hour (sometimes 5 hour) stretch at night before waking because he's hungry. I know he's hungry because nothing else will stop the crying except to feed him. When I do feed him, he gulps it down like he is starving and ALWAYS finishes the bottle! Books say to feed as much as babies will eat from the bottle, but I'm scared he'd keep eating and eating then spit it all up. I don't want to overfeed him. Is 5 oz every 3 hours too much? Should I go ahead and allow him to eat as much as he wants no matter how many oz it is? What about adding cereal to the formula (what some older moms have recommended)???

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for responding! Took my son to the ped for his 2 month check-up, and he is doing great! He is in the 75th percentile for his height and weight and the ped says this is fine. I'm thinking he must have been going thru a growth spurt because he seems to have calmed down on the hunger front. I did ask the ped about cereal and he said that 2 months is still too young, and to wait until he is 4 months at a minimum. So I'm going to hold off on the cereal for now and see how things go.

Hello My son was also a 9 pound baby. I would give him a little bit of baby cereal to help him being hungry all the time. a little baby cereal would go a long way and then he wouldn't spit up any more because he would have something else on his stomach instead of just liquid. I also did it with my daughter. My children were happier and sleep better. My mother gave us cereal when we were babies too. I hoped that helped.

Try some rice cereal in his bottle. When my children were both a month or two old my mom suggested that. It worked, and it will help him be fuller and you get some rest. I started out just giving it to them in their bottle before bed. It made a big difference.

I experienced that with my son his first few months also. It was recommended by my pediatrician when he was about 8 wks old to add rice cereal to his bottle--he suggested starting with a teaspoon per ounce, up to three teaspoons per ounce. My son always seemed to have tummy issues, and part of it was hunger! I hope it helps...I also used the babies oatmeal versus the rice--the oatmeal at bedtime seemed to help him sleep longer. I also have a 2 month old with a HUGE appetite. The dr. says not to give him more than 4 oz every 4 hours b/c his stomach is to small for more than that.

HA - He screams and screams in hunger. SSSOOOOOOO, I just started giving him cereal in his bottle. I use powder formula. This is what I do. I put 3 scoops of formula, 1 1/2 scoops (same scooper as the formula) of rice cereal and mix it with 6 oz boiling hot water. This melts the rice cereal just enough that it does not get clogged in the nipple. I mix it up before he needs it (every morning) and give it a chance to cool. With powder formula it is 2 oz of water to one scoop of formula. I just add half the amount of rice cereal to the powder. I mix it in larger batches for the day.

He is crying less, sleeping more and growing like a weed. I have had other babies where the dr. had me add the rice cereal to their bottle to weight the formula down so they would not spit up so much. That has worked too.

Good luck. Some pediatricians tell you not to give them cereal this early. I have always started mine on rice cereal at around 6 weeks, veges from the table (pureed in the food processor) at 3-4 months. I don't start on fruit b/c it is so sweet then they only want sweet stuff. My kids (even my 1 and 2 yr olds) will all eat their green veges first over potatos or something else. It is all they know.

Good luck.

If he's hungry, feed him. We added cereal to our daughter's bottles to help fill her a little more. We had to add quite a bit and get the larger nipple hole to fill her up.

My friend just had her baby boy and he's constantly hungry, more than her daugher ever was. Her pediatrian said boys are much bigger eaters.

You'll know if you over feed him... try to plug him full and sit him up after eating so the spit-up is reduced. Good luck! You'll be fine. Don't worry about the oz's.

I am an "older" mom. My son will be 30 this october. He was born 10lbs5ozs and drank 8 ozs from day 4 of birth at each feeding. At 4 weeks he was eating cereal. I believe you cannot feed too much. If they are hungry, feed them. My son was very healthy all of his childhood. He was a rolly polly though until he started walking and then it came off and stayed off. Don't worry so much. Just feed your child. Every child is different and some need more and some need less. You cannot always go by the book. Do what is best for you and your child.....

I have two daughters that are grown now, but I remember them being hungry all the time like that. My parents wanted me to give them cereal but like some of the mothers on here already said don't do it, I wouldn't do it, he is a bit young. Now if he were 4 months old, I would say yes give him the cereal. Ask the advice of your doctor.

Hi J., congratulations on your baby. I had the same issue with my son. My son was 9lbs as well and had (has) a big appetite. Ask your Pediatrician first but our Pediatrician gave us the green light on feeding my son rice cereal with his formula. Giving him rice cereal with the formula made a big difference. Baby food was also introduce to my son before his 1st yr.

Good luck,

J.,

Call your dr. At this age ALWAYS check in with them. That's what they are there for. Do not add cereal to the formula. Thier little digestive systems aren't ready for that. I know people say it can help but it actually can cause stomach issues. Belive me I was told a ton to do that and several medically trained people explained why that isn't good. People use to put whisky on soar gums......

You might want to try a differant formula but he's probably in a growth spurt. You will find sometimes they don't eat much and then sometimes they eat a ton.

Don't worry. You are doing the right thing. Trust yourself.

Hi there, I had that same problem with my daughter when she was that age...I finally called the nurse hotline..and they told me that I was feeding her too much and as a result, it was hurting her little tummy. The reason that your baby will stop crying is because the sucking action is soothing for babies. Which is why you will see them sucking w/out anything in their mouths. When your son first wakes up, before feeding him try to give him a pacifier until its time to eat again. It might take a few feedings to make the full adjustment, but it certainly worked for me. Good Luck and Congrats on your new baby!!!

I don't recommend starting food early, because gastric reflux can be induced and is a real pain. However, there is a safe way to introduce your baby to food. Start with small amounts of the flaky boxed cereal. Start with 1 tablespoon and slowly work your way up. Use the same brand and flavor two weeks at a time. This way, if he develops an allergy, you'll know, okay...he's allergic to bananas or bananas make him constipated or apple-base makes him go...Please do not put jar food in the formula! Once you start the cereal, you can't take him off. He'll crave it EVERY meal. It will increase as he grows. Hope this helps!

My little boy is a big boy too. Not fat at all but just a big boy. I just feed him a little more frequently so that he gets plenty to eat in the daytime and will sleep well at night. He is now ten months but since he was tiny I would feed him in 2 1/2 hours instead of 3. This was really helpful for me and he liked it. I still do that at night before bed, sometimes I will feed him 2 hours apart if he is hungry. I never wake him up at night to feed and he has been sleeping through since about 8 weeks or so. Hope that is helpful, and congratulations on your new little one!!!

One question, when baby was in the stomach did you hold yourself from eating when ever you wanted to eat and the amount you wanted to eat?
Not tryig to be mean but baby has that same appetite baby will let you know when they want no more and yes sometimes they need something else to fill them up but don't feed them extra like cereal until they are at least 3 months you want to make sure you know if they are alergic to thing as they are eating them, like the formula, Example, my oldest daughter could not drink formula milk when she was an infant.
Believe me baby will eat until they are satisfied like what we supose to do when we are hungry.

Hi J.. I happened to be one of those older moms that believes in cereal! When I took my son (my first baby)home from the hospital they told me to feed him every 4 hours. Well I quickly found out that it wasn't enough for him. I breast fed and supplemented with formula and fed him when he was hungry which was about every 2 hours and sometimes even more often than that! After receiving a tip from experienced older moms, I began feeding him a small amount of cereal at night before bed mixed with some formula. I gradually added a little more cereal (you have to give their digestive systems time to adjust)and before I knew it he was sleeping all night! He is now 20 years old, tall, thin, healthy and just finished his sophomore year in college. I did the same thing with my daughter who is now 16 and is finishing up her sophomore year in high school as a straight A student! I shared that with you so you can know that you don't have to go by the book to have a healthy child. I've said it before and I'll say it again, NO ONE knows your child like you do. Pray about it and do what you think is best for your precious little gift! Those older moms saved my sanity back then, I hope I am able to do that for someone too. God bless!

J.-
I would not add cereal to it yet - all the current recommendations say no "food" until at least 4 months, and 6 if you can put them off that long (my son wouldn't have waited!).

My now 11month old son was the same way - off the charts as far as weight, and always at least 95th percentile height. He would nurse for an hour at a time until he was about 2 months old, with only 2-3 hours break between. Some babies are just HUNGRY - just look at how fast they're growing as a percentage of their tiny size. Even between 2 months and 4 months he would want to eat at exactly 3 hour intervals. Starting cereal bought me an extra hour, but until about 7 months, he still wanted to eat and/or nurse every 4 hours.

Another way to think about the quantity is this: if you were nursing, you'd have no idea how much milk he was drinking, but you wouldn't pull him off the breast before he was done. So don't worry so much about the quantity, just make sure that when you're feeding him, he is hungry, and when you stop, he is ready to stop.

Congratulations on your baby!

I have three, all of them were big boys that were breast and bottle fed. All of them ate more often than 3 hours.

My suggestions:
~Add an extra ounce (my 4 month old was at 4 oz at 2 months)
or feed him more often. Listen to what he is saying to you :) He wants more food....

Also, before bed and before nap FEED HIM UNTIL HE STOPS eating! He will sleep more soundly which is important to his development and your sanity.

As far as some of the other advice:
Bottle babies can be over fed
2 months is too little for rice cereal (I started at 4)
Don't give him sugar or water.
Call your ped if you are unsure-- it is their job and they are used to these questions

Good luck!

Hello J., I think that you should feed baby when he wants and as much as he wants. My daughter was 10 pounds at birth and I Breastfeed her. She is now 8 months and 21 pounds. I dont' follow a schedule when feeding her I never have. Now that she is getting a little bigger and eating solid foods (stage 3) we are down to about 3-4 feedings during the day and 2 feedings during the night. You just have to do what ever you feel is good and so long as baby is happy you will be fine. I however do not recommend putting cereal in a bottle. Cereal is used to get babies used to EATING... moving it around in their mouth and swallowing. It is not really suppose to be used as a filler... My daughter won't take a bottle but my son did and My grandma was always trying to tell me "put a little cereal, it will help him sleep better, Put a little cereal to fill him up!" I never did, and eventually once he started eating solids he bottle feeding balanced out.
Hope that helps!! Good Luck!!

If he is truly hungry than feed him. He'll even out eventually. Does he burp well? One of my other children would eat and eat. My Doctor told me to burp him more frequently. Sometimes babies will eat to soothe a pain and bubbles cause pain. Once I started burping him more frequently, the amount of food and frequency slowed down. So did the spitting up. I have a 2 month old too and she loves to eat to sooth her reflux. But, If I feed her too much it exacerbates the reflux problem. She's eating 4 oz every 3 hours now and she'll do more if I let her but I don't and I will feed her another 1-2 oz 30 minutes to and hour later if she still seems hungry. If he is happy I wouldn't worry about how much he is eating.

my son was a month premature, 7 lbs 3 ozs. at 2 months old, 15 lbs, he was eating 8 ozs every 3 hrs. he was also sitting supported, sleeping through the night and holding his head. i thought i was over feeding him. my dr suggested starting cereal early. for a preemie, he was ahead of the game, and is now 6 months, 21 lbs, 29 inches and off all the growth charts. don't do the cereal in a bottle. keep going with his flow. if he finishes 5, go to 6 or 7. he may last longer between feeding this way, but if not, try cereal with a spoon if he has good head control. when you do this the first time, if he pushes all it out of his mouth, his tongue reflex has not diminished enough yet to do solids, and try again in a week or so.
if you look at your babie's weight gain, 3 lbs in 2 month is NOT too much, and i doubt you are over feeding. feed on demand, more at bedtime, and he may sleep through.

editing here: alot of ppl are saying add cereal to the bottle, and while it does work, i think spoon-feeding now will be good practice for later. putting cereal in a bottle sounds like a good idea to some (even me 6 yrs ago) but now i think the practice for later is more important. just start with a runny teaspoon, and follow up with a bottle. i also gave my 6 month old a spoon to hold before and between feeding. it is now his favorite teether, and he can put it in his mouth on his own, the right way, bowl up. to me, that is worth skippping the cereal in a bottle, because he is practicing to start trying to feed himself leter.

I am the baby of my family, and I lost my mother as a young child, but my father tells a story of my older brother describing much of your same problem. He was always hungry and wouldn't stop crying. Finally, they took him to a baby specialist (This was in the 1950's) who told them to go ahead and feed him food. That solved the problem. My parents fed my sister and me soft food from the time we were brought home from the hospital, and all three of us are healthy, happy adults today. I don't down the medical profession, and they certainly know more than me, but there are times that even they don't know what they're talking about. Given what I've just told you, I believe that digestive systems develope different just like everything else. Some babies are ready for food faster than others. Go with your instincts.

Dear J., take comfort in knowing that you are a good mom. You recognize your baby's needs and are doing your best to provide for him. I suggest continuing on the 3 hr schedule with a bit of cereal mixed into the 5oz formula. Feed him Before he starts to cry and get worked up to gulping. Talk to him in a soothing way and tell him to calm down that you are taking good care of him and want him to be satisfied. Overfeeding him will make him uncomfortable, cry and spit up. His tummy is still little and though he would like to eat and eat, he doesn't know that he'll be miserable. Are you using a pacifier? Maybe he just has strong sucking needs and giving the passy when he has finished his bottle will allow him to continue sucking without overfilling his tummy. HTH, C.

I don't think you need to worry about how much he is eating now. Let him eat what he feels he needs (without adding cereal). If you are concerned about him eating too fast and spitting it up, make him take a 2 minute break once or twice during the meal. If he's normally taking 5 ounces, then mix up that amount of formula and them when he finishes it, mix up the next batch(es) in 2 ounce amounts.
When my daughter was 2 months old (she just turned 5 months) she was taking in 100-250mL (3.38 - 8.45 ounces) when my husband gave her a bottle. She very rarely went more than 2-1/2 hours during the day and at that age she wasn't going more than 5 hours at night.
Don't expect your boy to sleep through the night until 4 months of age (he's not mature enough until then). And even then a lot of babies don't sleep through the night. I got lucky - my daughter has been consistently going 10-12 hours at night - but then she nurses every 1-2 hours during the day!
I think one thing that helped was beginning a routine for bedtime early on and sticking to it. She's always in her crib by 7pm an I do the same thing every night (apply Aquaphor for her eczema, change her diaper, dress her in jammies, nurse her, sing two songs and read a short story, then turn on her mobile).

Good luck!

talk with the doctor. I started cereal to my middle daughters diet when she was around 2 months because she never felt full (she had to be on dry milk). It didnt hurt her but your little man might be different or the doctor may not want you to do that. you may try at night to give him water, not the milk. (I use to give my son milk at night and in the long run it messed up his teeth he now has 4 fillers in.) What you do will effect him for the rest of his life so the best thing to do is go see your doctor and let the doctor know what is going on and ask him what is best for your little man.

Hi J.,

It sounds like you have a healthy baby boy with a healthy appetite! Don't worry about feeding him a certain amount, just give him as much as he wants to eat. Babies will not over eat. Just make sure you're not trying to get him to have the last couple of ounces when he indicates he is full, but that doesn't seem to be an issue for him right now!

My oldest used to nurse every two hours until he was five months or so. He also grew rapidly and has always been a little tall for his age. He also has an insane metabolism, and at five years old, still eats constantly! My second son went longer between feedings, so every child is different.

Your son is just fine. He is growing fast and he may have a high metabolism. Just make sure you're burping him to reduce the spit up. Feed him a few ounces, burp him, and let him have some more.

Take care and enjoy your precious baby!

If he's not breastfeeding, then it may be the sucking sensation that he truly wants, not the food. When a baby breastfeeds he can continue to suck for awhile but not get much milk as the breast has been emptied. With a bottle, you can overfeed. They want to continue sucking, it comforts them, but they keep getting milk. You might try a little water at times. Train him to take a pacifier. It is possible he's not really hungry. I know I did overfeed my first child because I felt it was the only thing that would calm her down, therefore she must be hungry. I learned that she wasn't hungry, it was just the easiest way for me to calm her down. Hang in there!

Hello,
My name is Patricia and I to had the same problem with my son when he was three months old. He weighed 8lbs.15oz when he was born. I started feeding him the dry cereal the day I brought him home because the bottle was not enough,it just wasn't satisfing him. I spoke with his doctor who by the way was a doctor who believed in feeding a baby more than just milk (thank the Lord). So he told me that if I gave him the polyvisol vitamins once a day in one of his bottles then I could try regular milk (whole d milk). I did that at 3 months and he loved it and could tolerate it so that is what he drank and was satisfied. Another thing I did, and I know this may sound crazy to a lot of people but it seemed that he just couldn't ever get enough to eat, so one day my grandmother ask me what I craved when I was pregnant with him and I told her hamburgers so she had my husband go and get a happy meal and brought it back and put it in the blender with a little milk. blended it up like baby food and fed it to him, to my suprise he loved it and then seemed to be satisfied after that with food. I hope that made sense to you. My son is now 19 and is a very healthy wonderful young man. Good luck and remember that your baby gets hungry just like you do and liquids don't always fill you up so why would it always fill your baby up. I will be praying for you, and don't get discouraged, you will find what works for you and your baby, just don't be afraid to feed him food.

Be blessed.

Do not add cereal to the formula unless he has reflux problems. Babies are not ready for cereal till 4-6 months. I suggest you quit listening to what the doctors say and do what you feel is right for your baby. Definately don't over feed him, like an 8oz bottle or something, but start with 4oz, and give him a good burp, if he still seems to be rooting offer another 1-2 oz. I thinking trying to feed a newborn on a schedule is a lost cause. Feed on demand and he'll be happier for it. Not to mention at 2 months, he is probably hitting a growth spurt, and his eating habits should regulate themselves in a few days.
Good luck.

hi!

My son was breastfed, and I seem to remember him feeding about every 20 minutes during the day for the first month or so. Because breasfeeding is easier (you don't have to prepare anything, I didn't think much about how much he was eating, even later when he let up a bit. But I don't think he went three hours wihtout eating ever, until he started eating solids at about 10 m., unless he was taking a long nap! And he's always been on the skinny side.
The three hour limit is an artificial one, made up for the convenience of the mother. If he is hungry before the end of three hours, it's because he needs to eat. I understand it must be a pain to prepare the formula every time, but if it is hard for him to keep down a lot at one feeding, it seems he might need more, smaller feedings.

good luck!
G.
My son is now a healthy 3 year old who is a pretty good eater and can go several hours without eating.

I have a 3 month old girl who went through the same thing. Turns out she has acid reflux and was eating non-stop to try to stop the pain from the formula and acid coming back up. Before she was diagnosed, she was spitting up a lot and was coughing and choking sometimes. The doctor put her on acid reflux formula and prevacid. She's only been on the regimen a couple of weeks, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. If yours has been spitting up a lot, arching his back, coughing, choking or gagging on clear, slimy stuff, then he might have it as well. Good luck!

Hello J.,
When my son got to a point where a bottle didn't seem to be enough I did add a little rice cereal to his bottle. I don't remember how old he was but I started with adding it to his "Dinner" bottle/right before he went to bed and pretty watered down and almost immediately he began sleeping through the night. I was always told to feed the baby until they were full. At this age they only know that they need to satify their needs and will usually stop when they are satisfied. I would still ask your pediatrician about it to make sure because what is good for one baby may not be good for another. If he's still hungry after your doing what the doctor has said then he needs to come up with another suggestion. Your son may be growing and in that case he does need more food. Children go through stages where they eat a lot during a growth spurt and then when that growth spurt stops then their food intake will go down and you'll be wandering if they are eating enough. Good Luck!

Call the pediatrician and schedule an appointment for when you'll know your baby is hungry and let him see for himself. Whatever you do, do NOT start him with cereal without your pediatrician's permission!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The rise in food allergies in children today is directly associated with the early introduction of solids (including rice cereal).

Hey J.,

I too recently had an eater. He was 10.5lbs at birth and was on formula, he is also my fourth baby in five years, so I've done this a lot recently. If he is still hungry then feed him. Eating every three hours is normal, just make sure you get him on a schedule. Sounds like he is a perfectly healthy little guy. Eating that often at night is fine too. He is only two months old. They pretty much eat around the clock at that age.
Don't worry about the amount either. My little guy was eating around 6 ozs around then. If he does spit up, then lessen the amount next time. Don't add cereal, he is too young! You sound like a good mommy, keep up the good work!

My son was the same way. So his doctor told us that if he finishes the 4oz no problem then move him up to 6ozs. So at 2 months he was eating between 5 & 6ozs ever 3 hours. So i wouldn't worry too much about over feeding him, he'll let you know when he doesn't want anymore.

Hi J. - it does sound like a lot but each baby is different. If he's spitting up after each feeding then maybe you could look at feeding a little, then burping, then feeding again. The feeding time might take longer but it might get his tummy to feel fuller if you feed slower. But of course, you should check with your doctor. If you want an easy way to keep track of how much you are feeding him over time, you can try our software at http://www.babblesoft.com for free. This will help you see his patterns and amounts of feeding all summed up nicely in a report.

Good luck!

Hello,
My oldest son Mark weighed 9lbs at birth and I experienced what you are going through. I started mixing baby cereal in with his bottle and he was satisfied for longer periods. With Mark being satisfied he slept longer during the night. At 6 mo. I started feeding him table food and soon he was off the bottle.
Mark is now 30 years old, tall and thin.
Good luck and much happiness with your new baby.
Thankyou,
V. Cram

3 hours is VERY normal :) Both of my babies ate a lot. They CAN overeat out of boredom and a love of the comfort of it, in which case, you'll know by them spitting up large amounts of milk. But keep in mind that it will pass.
Hang in there--you're doing a great job! :)

As I understand it, the American Academy of Pediatrics recently changed its recommendation of starting solids at 4-6 months to waiting until 6 months because the digestive system is not ready for solids before 6 months. I wouldn't think that a 2 month old's system could be ready for cereal.

I'd suggest calling your doctor for advice. You could talk to a nurse instead, but some things I'd rather get directly from the doc. You needn't feel like you have to save up your questions for well checks.

Good luck!

I raised 5 children and if the formula is not satisfying him add cereal to the formula. Start out with RICE only first. This is normal during the first year. He is a growing boy!!! Are you giving him any water? If not and he fusses add a little sugar or caroe syrup to the bottle to give it a little taste.

His stomach is small so make sure you are buping him every few ounces because then the milk will come up. I wouldn't give him cereal yet until the doctor tells you. Many food produce allergies or their digestive system might not be ready. So giving cereal might solve the hunger issue, but it could possible cause another later. Try giving him a little water before his real bottle or after. As with adults, it takes the stomach a few minutes to send the signal to the brain that it is full. Good luck, hope this helps.

I remember feeding my now 11 month old every 2-3 hrs even every hour sometimes, at that age. He ate all the time(I breastfed), until I started him on solids at about 5 1/2 months then that would hold him over for longer periods. He was super chubby, which I thought was great, at 4 month check up he weighed 20 lbs. The doctor was not worried one bit and told me as long as he was happy and healthy thats what mattered, and that he would start to thin out once he started moving. He weighs about 23 lbs now, food is now not that much fun since he can do other things.

I had a son that was always hungry as well and when he ate the same thing you could tell that he was really hungry. Our doctor continues to tell us to feed him as much as he will eat and ours is 5 months old and still is not over weight but is growing very quickly like yours. My son was 7lbs 7 oz when he was born and at 2 months he was 12 as well. I would add a tablespoon of rice cereal to the bottle as well. I am not sure if that really helped but he would spit up and that made a difference on him. Just keep feeding him for your own sanity. Now my son is finally going longer than 3 hours and does not always finish his bottle but when they are growing they need tons of formula.

I would always suggest listening to the ped, but from experience with 6 babies, 6-8 oz per feeding has always been fine unless there are medical problems or something. My 8 mth old's ped suggested cereal at 3 mths because of reflux and that worked fine also. I would just burp him every 2-3 ozs so he won;t spit up!

I must say, I think you are doing a great job. You are ready your sons cues, which is great. I would up the bottle amount by an ounce and see what happens. My daughter was a preemie, so feeding for us was never easy. But I know my husband was a big eater and was taking 8 oz every 3-4 hours at 3 months old. If you notice your baby spitting up, then back off a little. You might try the pacifier, but if all your son wants is to suckle, then he would not be gulping down the formula. And really try to avoid giving water. This can be very detrimental to your sons growth as it will give a full sensation, but with no calories etc.

Good Luck!

I say let the boy eat!!! You will find that there will be times that they eat you out of house and home and then other times that they will not be interested. He's a growing boy and needs his building blocks, so let him eat. My son was the same way, almost 9 lbs and just nursed night and day and was bottle fed too. I would nurse 6oz from each side and then every now and then start a bottle for him. Today he is 10 years old and the smallest in his class and not much of an eater. He is VERY active, so he just burns more than he takes in. Trust me, your boy is just storing for thost soon to come active months:) Enjoy!!!

At 2 months I beleivfe he may be going through a growing spurt. Really you should feed him as much as he wants and or add the cereal. The Dr. give you a guideline that you may use and work around... If he is pulliung his knees into his chest while he is fussing it could be colic and you will not want to feed him more. Spitting up is a natural thing to do so you may not want that to be a concern on wether or not you allow him to eat more

Let that baby eat! :) My son (now 4 months) still eats every 3 hours, but he's breastfed. Babies know when they are full, and they'll stop eating. As long as he's growing I wouldn't worry about it. Babies develop differently. My nephew is 5 weeks older than my son and my son already weighs more. (both are breastfed babies, and my son was born 1lb less than my nephew.)
I've also heard boys eat more than girls, so don't worry..your baby boy is fine!

sounds pretty normal - my 7lb 10 oz girl is 5 weeks old, and now weighs 12 lbs, she feeds every 1.5 - 2 hours during the day, and will sleep about 5 hours at night.
just feed him on demand - his little system is not ready for cereals yet - really every 2-3 hours is normal - he wont overeat, he will stop when he is full, my baby is breast fed so i cant see how many oz she is getting - she regulates herself which is what your son will do also

Is your baby having trouble with colic and gas? That could be the problem.
I think you should add rice cereal to his bottle. It won't hurt them. Good Luck.

I certainly wouldn't recommend over feeding him, perhaps feeding him more often - like 3 oz every 2 hrs. Adding cereal to the formula is especially the WRONG thing to do. Babies should not have solids before 4 months because their digestive systems are not developed enough. Early introduction of solids usually leads to gastrointestinal problems and diabetes in the future.

Congrats on your son!! Your son is completely normal and I would feed him as much as he wants. Our daughter ate 8 oz every 4 hours from a few weeks of age (the dr. thought we were exaggerating, but we most definitely weren't). She was quite the chubby baby, but worked it all off when she started crawling and walking. She is now 2 and is perfectly healthy
