My 2 1/2 yr old loves going pee pee on the potty, lover her underwear and her Arial pull ups.She loves being cheered on for a good job. She however wont poop on the potty and that seems to be where were stuck at. She will pee on the potty (of course not all the time she is still learning)but the moment she has to poop she runs away and hides. Does anyone have advice on the pooping part of the traing? My 6 yr old son was potty trained at 2 with out this type of problem.

What can I do next?

I had the same problem with my son. I don't know if this will work for you but I told my son if he started pooping on the potty, we would go buy the toy he had been asking for over the last several weeks. It worked and only cost me a $15 toy. Much cheaper than having to keep buying pull-ups! He didn't keep asking for more toys either, which was a fear. Worth a try. Good luck.

Hi L.-

I am a mom of three children:6, 4 and 2. When your daughter runs off to hide and poop. Tell her it's okay. Say something like " oh you have to poop, let mom know when your done, I will change you. Or oh are you pooping? This will signal to her that she is having a bowel movement. She will I promise, she will eventually move to the bathroom when she wants to make a bowel movement. If you push too hard she may take longer to potty train. It is really common for kids to hide and have a bowel movement. She is learning how to control those muscles, so it's not that she is being picky about it , she is just realizing what that sensation is. So a verbal que from you will also help her put two and two together. Then you can say "oh I see you are pooping let me know when you want to put that on the potty, I have a specail surprise for you. That could be anything from a sucker to a dollar store toy. She will come along.... they all do? hOpe this help and good luck. Remember this is her journey you are just along as a tour guide.

My daughter had the same situation and what we did was tell her that she had four pull-ups left, then three, then two . . . until she had no more left. She held it for three days and finally pooped in the potty. I talked to the nurse at her doctor's office since I was worried about her holding it for so long and she said not to worry - when she had to go she would go. She kept asking for a pullup, but I told her we had no more and then she eventually went in the potty. Also, my friend who was a preschool teacher for many years, told me that a child will usually pee on the potty first and then it takes anywhere from 6-8 months for them to poop on the potty after they learn to pee, which is exactly the time frame it took for my daughter to go. Good luck - I know how stressful it can be. :-)

Hi L., I have a boy who will be three the end of October and we were having the same problem. He loves batman, so what we told him was, that if he did poop in the toilet Batman was going to call him to let him know how proud we were of him. I told them that story today and the next day he pooped in the toilet.

I had a friend of mine, someone he does not know, call him and as if he was batman & told him how proud we were of him and such, and he has been pooping in the toilet since then, no accidents.
You should stop using the pull ups because my little one was getting confused with them, he was waiting for us to changed him into them for the night to do his business. Good luck!

That happened to my son and is VERY common. It took him 8 mo's to poop on the potty until we learned of this trick. Someone suggested to trick him with a piece of chocolate and it worked! When he attempted to go poop on the potty, my husband secretly slipped in a mini candy bar into the potty and my son actually thought he did it. He was so excited and proud of himself. Once he overcame the fear, he was fine. It was poop in the potty ever since.

We never had this issue with #2 , my daughter. Some kids just need a little help.

Good Luck!

This situation comes up all the time. My advice is only as a last resort. Tell her she has two weeks to learn to go poo on the potty, because after 2 weeks you will no longer change her poopy underwear or Ariel pull ups, she will have to do it herself. Then follow through. I mean, let her take off the pants, wipe herself and get a new underwear and put her clothes back on. She won't want to deal with that and will start to run for the potty.
