whenever my 2 1/2 year old wakes up from her nap in the afternoon she is so gassy that she just cries for like 15-20 minutes sometimes longer! This has gone on for a while, but I'm just noticing it more, but this is the ONLY time that this ever happens, then once it's over it's over. I asked her yesterday if her tummy hurt and she told me it did so I'm not sure. It's not as if she eats anything that would cause tons of gas before a nap or anything a basic lunch consists of peanut butter and jelly on wheat and maybe some cheez-its and a little milk but she dosen't nap right after she eats. and I know this sound terrible but if I give her a popsicle the crying stops immediatley. but she not crying for one! she dosen't say one word about it or even think about it I offer it just because she will wail forever! I know it's horrible and wrong but I figure she gets one a days as a treat anyhow because she eats her lunch really good so it wouldn't hurt if it quiet her down too :) help!

What can I do next?

I have a 2 yr old and she is really gassy too, I think the milk has something to do with it but I have come to the conclusion that while they are sleeping it's harder for them to release the gas because of the horizontal position and lack of movement. During the day their running and playing and it's easier to work itself out. I think I would probably try giving her Mommy's Bliss Gripe Water before she takes a nap, I love that stuff works great on my kids and it all natural!

Both Wheat and Milk can cause gas problems.

Try cutting out one or the other for a couple of weeks and see how she does (contrary to what we've been told no one "needs" milk, we can get the calcium we need from other sources)

have you tried gas drops??and maybe when she wakes up going for a short walk,it will keep her mind off it hopefully and also give her a little exercise which will help with digesting food

I agree with the other moms about the milk and wheat. My girlfriend just looks at a milk container and cramps up. I just got this new soy milk from Meijer and it was vanilla flavor and it was fantasic and my son loved it. My son isn't the biggest wheat fan so I started to buy the kids white bread with all the grains in it and he doesn't even know he is eating healthy. Good luck!

She could be lacto-intolerant. Try Lacto or Soy Milk. My daughter drinks both with problems

Good Luck!

I am wondering if she gets milk at other times of the day. Personally I am reluctant to get rid of milk and wheat, but these are very common causes. However, if it's that, it seems unlikely that a popsicle would fix it. How long after she eats does she take her nap, kids eat about every 3 hours (with meals and snacks) and that's good and normal.... Maybe she is just hungry when she wakes up.

I second the soy milk idea. My son will only drink Silk brand, though.. the others have a slightly grainy texture he doesn't like. It won't hurt your daughter any to switch for a week or two to check it out and see if thats part of the problem.

Has she always been gassy/cranky after naptime or when waking in the morning? It could be something about how she's breathing while she sleeps, gulping in too much air, or snoring causing her to swallow air.
