2 1/2 Year Old Daughter Has Recurring Fevers.

Hi, my youngest daughter has been having on and off fevers all day. When I say on and off, I mean she will literally have a fever one minute and the next minute she won't. Almost like she never had the fever and will play like she normally does. Her fevers are around 99.3-100.5. I have 2 older children, and I know for a fact that they never went through anything like this before. I asked my mom about it and she was just as baffled as I was. I tried looking it up on the Internet, and have come up empty handed. Have any of you other mommies had the similar problem with any of your children? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

My daughter would get those low grade fevers a lot. They did not seem to really bother her and the doctor was not so worried since it was so low as to almost not be considered a fever. She grew out of them around the age of 3.

I think you need to relax and give your doctor a call on Monday. 100.5 is barely a fever (a high temperature is considered a fever at 100.2 degrees) and if she is not having any other worrisome symptoms, just wait it out.
Small children spike a temperature for the smallest viral infections - sometimes they don't even seem sick... my pediatrician does not even want to see us until my daughter's fever it as least 104 and not responding to tylenol or going on for more than 3 days.
Good luck.

I'm a bit late in responding, but wanted to mention that if she's been playing ouside in the grass at all, there's always a chance of (don't panic!) Lyme Disease. Sometimes there will be rash, but not always. Pay attention to any signs of achiness or joint pain, or other flu-like symptoms. Perhaps ask your physician about that possibility...or it could be a mild summer virus. Hard to know. Best wishes.

It is summer time and viruses(sp) run rampant. She probably just has
one of those and will be fine within 24 hours. Kids like to keep us
guessing.

I called my doctor a few weeks ago because both my son and daughter had fevers. My son 103.3 and daughter 102. It was the week before my sons 1st birthday and I was having a big party that week. The doctor said that 100.3 is considered normal till they are 4. So i should not worry if his fever was 100.3. Sounds like your daughter is getting over heated while playing. It has been very hot out lately. Have her drink lots of water.

Since it's low grade, I wouldn't worry about it. Just keep her hydrated and give her rest.

I agree to ask the doctor on Monday, as long as she's playing and eating like normal until then.

I have to beg to differ with the mothers saying not to worry until it is above 100.4, though. Every child is different, and one child may not be sick at all at 100.4 and one may be fighting off an infection at 99.6, and need medical care.

My daughter's temperature is usually on the low side, so when I noticed her not feeling well, I took her temp. It was 99.2. I didn't do anything at first, and then when I noticed that she was still not feeling well the next day (fussy, not eating, throwing up, loose stools), I took her temp again. It was 99.6. I'm used to seeing 97-98 range at the most. I called her doctor, and they said it's nothing until it's 100.4 or above. So, I let this go on for three weeks, because her doctor would not do anything about it. Finally, I called her urology specialist, and he ordered a urine culture. She had a UTI for 3 weeks, I'm sure of it. Her temperature never went above 99.6.

When my son was that age he'd sometimes spike a temp (103) and it would be gone a half hour later with out any medication. He'd play like nothing was wrong and he would be eating just fine. We never found a reason for it.

Hi. that's not considered a fever yet. above 100.4 is considered a fever.. Sounds like it just may be her normal, fluctuating body temperature.. I agree with someone else who said to have her drink lots as it has been hot lately... Nothing to worry about!

I would relax about this. She does not have a high fever - anything not above 100.4 is a low grade fever and no action needs to be taken. Why would you take her temperature a minute apart? I think it's best to lay off the thermometer and if your child is sick, get her in to see the doctor tomorrow. With such a low grade fever, knowing what the temp is does not accomplish anything so leave her be and make sure she's staying hydrated.
