A very special friend of my daughter (and the whole family, really) is having her 1st Communion on May 8th. I am not Catholic, so I am not familiar with this special time for them.

Any ideas on a special gift we can get for her?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We chose a nice cross necklace that matches my daughter's that she got for Christmas. It seemed like a great idea, since we are moving in a week and they will be 12 hours away, but will have the matching necklaces to remember each other.

My son will have his first communion on May 7th. I ordered him a rosary and an engraved pewter bookmark (he loves to read)

Our son is celebrating his First Communion this weekend. We got him a Rosary. Perhaps you could get a nice box for the girl to put hers in. That would be a great gift.

What a wonderful gift of friendship you are giving to your daughter's friend!!

A cross necklace or a first bible is nice. Of course you can't go wrong with money either.

Quite candidly... money is a traditional gift for religious events. Most children have a savings account started with the money they receive at their Baptism and add to it with each Sacrament.

You could do a check (or cash) and add to it a picture frame for her to frame a picture of her and your daughter together all dressed up in front of the church. She will likely receive quite a few medals, crosses and other religious items from those who share her faith. Because your family is not Catholic, you can think "outside the box" a little bit.

Other ideas...
- tickets to an event that she could attend with your daughter
- gift certficate for movies
- depending on how the mother feels, you could arrange to have her hair done on the morning of the First Communion (with your daughter)... my mother's best friend did this for mine and it was so much fun! Or have her nails done the day before-

Money is appropriate and maybe have your daughter pick out just a small fun gift for her.

A small medallion necklace would be good.

money... my parents made me bank all my 1st communion money and then bank 1/2 of all other gift money. When I needed a car, I had the money to purchase a used one.
