Hello Mama's!
I am looking for a good recipe to make my son's 1st birthday cake. I don't want it to be overloaded with sugar. I will be buying a bigger cake for everyone else but I want something special for him. Any suggestions on the icing? Lower sugar if possible. I have been making all of his food since he turned 6 moths and he nevers gets junk of any kind. This will be fun for him!
Thank you!

Hi A.,
I agree with Susan, my daughter wasn't really into cake when she was a year old. She only ate a few bites; she didn't like the feeling of the frosting on her fingers. She never asked for a bite of the leftover cake we brought home from her birthday party. My mother-in-law works at Sam's Club, so we bought my daughter one of the smaller "smash" cakes for her to mush around. She's only recently become aware (at 19 months) that cake and candy exist.

If you really want to make his cake, here's a recipe I saw the other day. I haven't tried it (and I'm not a chocolate cake fan), so I can't give you my opinion on it.

Also, I think my local grocery store carries small sugar-free cakes in the refigerated section near the bakery.

How about just getting him a cupcake?
It can be something you make, maybe a carrot cake cupcake, and just use Splenda in the recipe for the icing... instead of sugar.

Or, look online for a sugar free type of icing.

At 1 years old, they don't often eat cake things, at least mine didn't. It's mostly for taking pictures and everyone else, as having a cake is customary for a birthday.

You don't "have to" give him sugar/junk if you don't want to...

Or, a banana cake/banana bread loaf is great too.... it's naturally sweet and you don't have to necessarily put icing on it... just a candle with some words written on it with icing...

Good luck,
Susan

I vote carrot cake - it is the standard birthday cake in our family. You can make it as sweet as you want or not.

you can find low sugar cake ideas on line. for my daughters 2 bday we paid a friend to make a low sugar allergy friendly cupcake cake (2 kids had food allergies). a cream cheese frosting should be good esspecaily on carrot cake.

Hi A.,

Check out wholesomebabyfood.com, they have a few great healthy cake recipes. Also check out this link from green parenting, http://www.grizzlybird.net/2007/01/babys-1st-birthday-cak... and there are even more great recipes. My son's 1st birthday is in July and I'm trying to narrow down one of these recipes for his birthday too. Good luck!
