18 Month Old Refuses to Drink Milk Out of a Cup

My daughter will NOT drink anything but juice and occasionally water out of her sippy cups. She'll only drink milk out of the bottle. I've even tried leaving it in the cup as long as possible w/o her getting overly hungry and she just won't do it. I'd love to discontinue the bottle but she has something against sippies; she only likes certain ones.

I took my son off the bottle at 24 months and i have to tell you that the longer you wait the tougher it is. It was a long 2 weeks but well worth it. I took him to the store and let him pick out a few cups that he wanted. Seemed to allow him to feel that he was in control over part of what was going on. If your daughter goes for a few days or even a few weeks without milk while she adjusts she will be fine. For the first week after the bottle was gone my son refused to drink milk but after he realized that the bottle was NOT coming back he gave in and now asks for milk all the time in a cup.

Some say, you don't have to stop the bottle right now, she is young and will grow out of it.

Some say, just throw the bottles away, and make a ritual of it with your daughter... and then that's it. Cold turkey. She may not drink milk for a few days... but she just has to get used to it. Then reward her for it or give her an incentive/prize.

Some say, don't give her anything else, besides milk, in sippies during the day, until she gives in. And leave the sippy cups out and around so she can drink at will.

or, you only offer her milk in a bottle at certain times. Gradually lessening, over time, the frequency of it. Or just letting her have a bottle at HOME... not outside the home. Thus, "weaning" her.

MANY kids/babies will only drink milk from a bottle, because it is a natural instinct... because "milk" comes from a "nipple" be it from Mommy's breasts or a bottle "nipple." So, weaning from it, is much like weaning from a breast.

Maybe also, try different sippy cups since they all have different spouts on them (hard or soft), or try straw cups.
But maybe, she is just not ready to transition yet.

All the best,
Susan

I've heard about gradually cutting the tip of the nipple more and more so that the milk comes out faster, more like a cup. However, I personally haven't had this issue with my kids so I haven't tried it myself.

If the issue concerns you, address it asap, because I have a friend whose son is almost 4 and still has to have have his milk in a bottle! They came to our house for a playdate, I offered the kids milk with dinner, and I was shocked when my friend refused, because her kids only take milk from the bottle.

Well try using those certain sippies... other than that you could try a regular (plastic) cup or they have some that have a straw coming out of them.. maybe that could be an option.
