So What Happened?

He does pull himself up.. Does crawl.. but he also didnt sit up unattended till about 12 months old! he will walk hesitantely while holding his hands.. He's my youngest of 4, but I do now try to 'Make him" walk while holding his hands from the car to the house, store etc.... He has stood in the middle of the floor for about 10 seconds then drops once he realizes it.. lol

I don't think it's a big concern.
Girls mature way faster than boys in this arena.
Sounds like your other boy started early. If you are concerned, make an appointment w/your ped to rule out anything major.
Otherwise, I think he is probably just the norm and will start w/in the next few months.

My neice was at least that old. Her pedi gave her the 18 month mark. If she wasn't walking by then she was gonna send her to a specialist for evaluation. She never crawled though. She scooted on her butt to get everywhere. I've never seen a kid do that till her! Ask your pedi and see what she says. Your lil man may need some help getting started and there's nothing wrong with that!

Is he crawling? Pulling himself up on stuff? Do you carry him all the time, or does he have adequate time to roam around? Can he walk if you're holding his hand?

ETA: Just saw your update, thanks :) If he's dropping as soon as he realizes he's not holding into anything, that seems okay. He's just the little lion from the Wizard of Oz and needs to find his own courage :)

Just to be sure, when he goes in for his 18 month check up, have them check his ears and make sure everything's okay with his inner ear and equilibrium. If he was a little slower than his sisters, that's okay, boys develop most motor skills a little slower. Don't compare kids, you'll create a nightmare for yourself ;) Check with the doc, but I'm pretty sure if you continue to encourage him, it will 'click' and he'll be running around in no time :)

I have four kids.
Three are between the ages of 5 -11.
One is 6 months old.

My three oldest all started to walk at about 12 months old.

I'm sure that he will walk when he is ready but just to be sure I would take your little one in to be seen by his Dr.

Take care.

My son kind of started with a step or two around 15, but didn't really walk till 17 1/2 months. Ped said most times if they cruise well, there is no need to worry till 18 months. At that point, check with your county for an Early Intervention evaluation. You may not need it by the time it's scheduled! :) Good luck.
Btw, tall children sometimes are late walkers if they feel they might lose balance more easily than the shorties.

My daughter was at the same place last spring and finally walked at 17.5 months. I was told by several people that 18 months is when a child gets services from Early Intervention. I was just about to call when my daughter got it.

Having him walk holding your hand is good practice. So is a push toy. My friend who is a PT assistant put yarn in he wheels of a push toy at first so it wasn't too "fast" for a new walker. We also used the push toy on grass so it was slower moving. I had her using the push toy almost every day from about 15 or 16 months until she was walking (about 2-3 months). Eventually we took the yarn out when she was walking bit on her own.

Everyone in your home has to stop carrying him, getting things for him and make him get moving!! He CAN do it, he just doesn't need to.

We had a couple late walkers in our moms group. They were all checked out and the pediatrician's said they were fine. I think for the mom's it was more a matter of being ashamed than anything. They are both 2 & they both walked around 18/19 months.
One mom was able to get free occupational therapy sessions from the state. They can 2x a week. Might explore that?

I believe 17 - 18 months is outside the "ideal" range for walking, but just barely. I'm sure he's probably fine. Sounds from your update like he's going to start any day now. Still, do mention it to your ped. So many times when kids are on the late age of a milestone, they are doing just fine! Sometimes that's not the case and there's something else going on. Better safe than sorry, so I would definitely say something at the 18 month checkup. That way your ped can ask questions just to make sure, and you will feel so much better.

Hi,

My son was 17 1/2 months last summer when he started walking. The ped was not concerned because all the pre walking skills were in place. Once he started he took off and really ran from there. He really would not let go until he was 100% sure of himself. check with your ped but if all the other stuff is in place, I would expect any day now he will take off- 18 months is the cut off of the typical range.
