16 Month Old Son Not Sleeping!

Help! My son is 16 months and started out a great sleeper. He began sleeping through the night when he was 4 months old and when he turned a year everything changed! We have graduated to the point of getting him down at night with minimal tears, but he still gets up in the night screaming/crying and wants out of his crib. These past 4 months have been crazy, sleepless nights! And nap times have become unbearable. We have tried EVERYTHING! Someone recently told me about the book, 'The No-Cry Sleep Solution.' I am willing to read it and try it out, but they have a book for babies and one for toddlers/preschoolers. Which one should I get for a 16 month old? And I am open to any other suggestions you may have! Thanks for your help!

I can't recommend "Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child" by Marc Weissbluth enough. It takes you through each stage of development and sleep issues you might face (even into high school). I practically memorized it the first 6 months of my son's life, and now just refer to it when I think we might be heading off track (he's now 22 months). Just a warning, the first half of the book is mostly theory, so head to the back half for some practical tips at this developmental stage right away. Good luck!

Healthy Sleep Habits; Happy Child is a great resource. I referred to it on several occasions and all the stages.

My son hated his crib. He hated being closed in, it showed in other ways too though. If I put up one of those gates in the house, like if I just mopped the kitchen, even if I was on the same side of the gate that he was, he would just go to the gate and cry. He didn't like the fenced in feeling. We ended up putting him on a mattress (twin sized) on the floor in his room when he was a year. The threat of us closing the door was usually enough to keep him in his own bed. He's five now and having the door closed to his room is still a major punishment for him. So if he shows other signs of that than just the crib you might try the mattress. The book I like for sleep solutions is called Healthy Sleep Habits; Happy Child. It has a no cry method in it.

Hi A.,

If you're open to reading, the book Secrets of The Baby Whisperer is great. There's one for infants and toddlers and she covers all issues you can think of from sleeping and eating to behavior with toddlers etc. Good luck.

Best,
Jen

my son is 19 months old and we were in your shoes not too long ago. to be honest, i turned to this book called "toddler 411". after my husband and i read the chapter on sleeping, i made a list of guidelines for us to stick to, posted it by the kitchen sink, and it took no more than three days for things to turn around. i'm not saying he sleeps perfectly every night, but i feel much more capable when dealing with him when we does wake up in the night--or at 5am. we also had him quit the bottle cold turkey during this, too. that was something i was terrified of, but we stopped giving it to him and he never flinched. so, anyhow, if your interested in the book, i'm sure it's at the library, but also we live in romoeville and your more than welcome to just borrowing it. good luck~
