Hello Ladies! My 16 month old son has a buckle fracture in his left wrist and got a cast yesterday. He has a fractured his ulna and radius and with his age they had to cast his whole arm. They could not provide him with the new casting material that can get wet (this had to do with his age too). So, we can't get the cast wet. For meals we put him in a raincoat and leave his arm inside and zip it up- seems to work well. BUT...He loves to walk around with his drinks and I'm so afraid he's going to spill something on his cast(those sippy cups as you know are NEVER leak proof!!) I also don't want to put a plastic baggie on his arm all day!! I have never dealt with casts before (i'm thinking this is the first of many). Has anyone tangled with this issue? Any arm cast advice or helpful hints would be wonderful! He's also left sided, top heavy with the cast and just started walking a few months ago- will he get used to this?

What can I do next?

Don't worry. He will get used to the cast. You might try wrapping Saran Wrap around the cast. Also, there are sippy cups tht will NOT leak. I bought some for my grandkids at WalMart. (A Dora one and also Spiderman.) They have little inserts in them tha prevents the leaks!! Good luck.

My middle daughter, who is 6, just recently had her first cast. She took it off herself 6 days early. The one thing thy did tell me when they put it on us that if something was to happen to it, they could take it off and put a new one on. I know that we don't want to be replacing it all the time. A little wet on the outside won't really hurt it. Just keep an eye on it for weak Spots. My daughter actually went swimming with a plastic Walmart n ah over her arm. Good luck with this experience. And may God bless you.

My mom suggested Press & Seal (plastic wrap that sticks). Press it all over the cast & tuck it into the cast. My oldest son had a cast on both legs & 1/2 of his torso after hip surgery, so I have never delt with an arm cast. I hope someone can help!
God bless!

M.,
Poor baby! My little one (well not so little now, he's five years old) got a cast on his leg when he was 11 months old. A Toddler's Fracture is what they called it. I felt awful because I had fallen down the stairs while carrying him and so his little leg ended up in between my back and the stairs.
Anyhow, he had a cast for a month and we just had to make sure we kept it dry as well. I would wrap it in plastic when we gave him a bath or during feeding, but all the precautions I took, life happens and the cast got dirty and gross. By the end, when they took the cast off, his leg smelled terrible. Only after repeated bathing did the smell go away, but it was after a week. During the time I would put powder down the opening and clean it with cotton swabs of alcohol. I think it's inevitable for the skin underneath it to be the way it was because of it being enclosed for so long so just prepare yourself for the arm to be somewhat flaky and, obviously, lighter in color and a bit smaller in size.

Good luck!

Yesterday, I saw children's plastic cast covers at Walgreen's. This was after I had read your request but by the time I got home I forgot to write. They weren't to expensive and were with all the canes and other disabled products. If Walgreen's has them others might too. Let your fingers do the walking. Or use the Internet.

I might go to a Goodwill or someplace like that and buy some coats that are a water resistant then cut off the arms to make a cover for the cast that can be changed and washed. You would probably go bigger with the size so it covers it and you would have to sew something for the top to keep it up, maybe just tucking it in would do. Good luck

Relax; I had an 18 month old in a cast. It only slowed her down about 3 hrs. we bagged it for bathes and kept her out of the pool. other than that, nothing special. In three wks it was wearing badly at the wrist and the doctor x-rayed and decided it could come off. Little ones are very resilient and by the way; if the plaster does get wet it will air dry just be careful it isn't mis-shaped. God Bless. By the way she did have about 7 cracked wrists before puberty when she quit needing casts or braces.

G'Morning Marine, I think ( if i remember right) they make cast covers that are water proof. You might check medical supply places or ask your pharmacist.

Poor little guy, what a way to start his toddler time.

God Bless you

A couple of things. What kind of sippy cups are you using? My son uses Playtex cups and they never leak. He loves to carry them around all day. Also think about taking walks in the stroller. Prop a pillow under his arm. You could go to the zoo. Is there a children's museum near you? What about a going to story time at the library? Good luck with your little man.
