16 Month Old & Extended Fevers

Hi Mama's-

My 16 month old has been sick for the last 3 weeks. It started as a cough, then escalated to fevers, diarrhea, throwing up, loss of appetite, and drinking water like crazy (which is a good thing) about two weeks ago. We took her to the doctor twice and were told it was a virus and that she would just have to wait it out. We were advised to ease the pain by rounds of generic tylenol and ibuprofin, rotated and every 3 hours.

She seemed to finally break the fever last Monday, was fine for a few days, then on Friday night she got the fever again. I thought it might be teething, but yesterday, she threw up twice and was the most miserable I have seen her. She slept fine through the night (about 12 hours), but woke up this morning and literally slept for another 3 hours, snuggled next to me.

I am wondering if anyone has experienced this? We feel if we take her to the doctor, we will be told the same thing, because her chest, ears and throat seem fine.

I am trying to rule out any other illnesses and one thought that comes to mind is that we do have an older cat who recently had diarrhea. I am wondering if there could be a connection there.

Thanks,

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hello- I wanted to let everyone know I appreciate your feedback. FINALLY, we went to a doctor that ordered some additional testing and as it turns out she does have a UTI that we are now treating with antibiotics. They are sending the sample to the labs and will have more results tomorrow which will determine what other courses of action may be needed. It is quite frustrating, but I learned my lesson in that I need to be more 'aggressivel' when it comes to my baby's health. Although she will be on antibiotics for 10 days, she was herself this morning and was requesting to eat, so I see that as a good sign. Thanks again for your feedback.

My son recently had a high fever for 10 days... and we went to the doctor throughout the week... where they eventually did a blood test (to rule out bacterial infection) and a chest x-ray (to see if the virus had settled in his lungs)... and they finally found it in his lungs and saw that he had a viral pneumonia!... which has now been resolved with antibiotics. We're all finally getting rest again.

You should definitely insist on further testing or get a new doctor... although a cold and/or cough can last up to a few weeks, I was told that a fever should not last more than just a few days!...

Good luck... I hope she feels better soon!

Go back to the Dr. & demand blood work be done ASAP. If your Dr. is not concerned that your child has been sick for 3 weeks than you need a new Dr.

Oh my... this sounds like something i'd see on the show "mystery illness". A child should not be sick for 3 weeks, and don't take "it is a virus" for an answer! Keep going to different doctors until you find one that is willing to run a battery of tests to rule out the "less common" possibilities... the ones that most doctors avoid as not to "run expensive tests" and cut costs. But when it is your child, you want answers. Dehydration and fatigue are serious concerns, and 3 weeks is a really long time to have a virus. Take her to a different doctor today-- and let us know how it turns out!

I agree with the other moms here - three weeks is way too long to be dealing with this. Most viruses clear up in 3-7 days so this is obviously something more than that. Definitely go back to your pediatrician and request that blood tests and urine tests be done to rule out other possibilities. You know your daughter better than they do and you know this is not normal so be as forceful as you need to be. It's not easy but you are your daughter's advocate and you are looking out for her health.

Have ur child a CBC bloodtest... She might be bitten by a mosquito whose carrying a virus which they called it "dengue". Have her platelet count check coz all the symptoms you mentioned were related to the dengue virus.
