Ok, I have a good question for y'all. My 16 mo boy is grinding his teeth now at night (can't stand that sound ugh) is this normal and what should I do about it if it isn't/is. Is there some sort of baby mouth guard? Anyway, happy to get your advice.

What can I do next?

My daughter also does this. The dentist said it is very normal for children, it will not cause any harm and there is nothing you can do about it.

keep an eye on it. At 16 months it could be normal due to teething but my son is a grinder and he ground his baby teeth down to nubs and is now working on his lower adult teeth (he is 13 and with sensory issues so he wont wear a guard while he sleeps). Just something to think about.

My 21 month old son just started grinding his teeth. Except he does it during the day to annoy my sister because she can't stand the noise it makes. I think its pretty normal, and maybe she is doing it because she learned that she can make noise with her teeth. I have been grinding my teeth since I was about 2 and havent had any real damage done to my teeth yet. Im pretty sure mouth guards are not available til at least preschool age.

My 4yr old does this!! Sometimes it sounds like he is chewing on rocks it's so loud! He has done it since we can remember and it has worn the enamel off the back of his upper front teeth, thinned his teeth at the bottom so they chip easily too. His dentist said the only thing to do is pull them but we are going to leave them in for as long as possible. Either till they get cavities, cracks or wears them down too far to the gum line. I was hoping they could put caps on them to help protect them but they can't. So really there is nothing we can do except to get him to stop when he does it.

Good luck

I wonder if it could be due to teething discomfort? My 11 month old grandson has been grinding his teeth and my daughter has found that a dose of infant Motrin is the secret to giving him some relief. I would just mention this to your pediatric dentist the next time you are in the office so that they can be aware of it and have it on your sons file. He is too young to be expected to wear a bite guard at this age but all three of my adult daughters and myself all wear bite guards at night....so if this continues to be a problem, of course the guard could help in the future.

Hi B.
Another angle is to check fr worms which are normal in children but need to be treated.
Teeth grinding is one of the symptoms of having worms.
