$150+ For 5 Year Old Bday Party ?

I am trying to find somewhere to have my dd's 5th bday party in a few weeks. last year we did a park and the kids had to wear mittens and hats, so I want somewhere inside. One of the things I thought would be fun is a local gymnastics center. it's $150 for 1.5 hours (for 10 kids). We could make it be 2 hours for an additional $20. They provide plates, utinsels, hats. I will still have to provide the food and cake.

We mostly still do family at this point, and maybe one or two other friends. So her cousins would have a blast, but I am wondering is this too much to spend on a party? Or is this normal? How much do you spend on parties at this age?

Is 1.5 hours enough? or would you do the extra half hour for $20?

Thanks Moms!

Thats a great price my sons 4th bday last year I spent well over 700$ Yikes! It was at a bounce house place with 22 kids. I also hired a batman character for the 3 hr party...yea a little much for a birthday but my sons face when batman brought in his cake was well worth every penny!

That's pretty cheap. Around here people love to spend upwards of 300 bucks on a little kid's party. I think 150 is reasonable.

It depends on your budget if that's too much. That is about the cost of having a party at most indoor places that we've used. I would go with the extra $20 so you aren't rushed.

If you're spending the $150, you might as well do $20 more for the extra half hour. We're spending $200 for a party at a gymnastics place for my son's 4th b-day in two weeks. It's VERY worth it to me to not have two dozen kiddos and their parents in my little house and yard (and Murphy's Law would have it rain, of course), plus the cleaning before and after. This is actually the 3rd year in a row we're having it at the same place.

I would make it 2 hours. The children get a great workout by playing on the equipment and I don't think you can have a party like that around here for less than $250.

My daughter is 16 now and when she was 5 we rented out a farm area, catered it with BBQ and there were hay mazes, pony rides, pet farm and everyone had a blast. She was really in to Jesse from Toy Story at the time and it fit in perfectly for a theme. We had at least 15 guests plus parents and fed them all.

I say go for it! UNLESS, your budget cannot handle it right now.. Don't go into debt for a party.

I spent about $300 on my 3 year olds party. Only you can decide what is too much to spend on a party. I would definately do the extra half hour. We went to a bday party at a gymnastics center and it was soooooo much fun! None of the kids wanted to stop playing, especially on the trampolines! Have fun!

That totally depends on your personal budget. We did a gymnastics center birthday too-same price, but luckily, I merged it with 2 other kids with close birthdays in my daughter's class, so we split it three ways and it was super cheap with tons of kids. I probably wouldn't have sprung for it alone for less kids-the center was huge, but people do it! The kids will have fun!

I couldn't believe it, but even with all the kids and activities (structured games by staff, then free play, then cake/presents), the 2 hour party still got a bit long and could have been shorter.

That's a very affordable price, for that kind of party. I looked into a gymnastics place for my son, and it would have cost us several hundred dollars for an hour. Personally, I would spend the extra $20. By the time you do cake and gifts, there isn't a great amount of time to play.

that's a good price. Where I am, I am excited if I get out of the birthday party for under 250.

That's pretty cheap for what most places charge actually. Most parties we go to do an hour of play an thirty minutes for drinks and cake. The kids have a blast. Sometimes they have pizza other times they don't, and I don't think badly at all if they don't provide food. If it were me I would pay the extra 20 since you have that option.
I just noticed the 10 kids part. At our local gymnastics place they charge more but its for up to 25 kids, so I am not sure if it's such a great deal. We typically try to spend around one hundred for parties, my kids are young though so it's just a few of their pre school/ playgroup friends.

I think the price is normal and I would make it 2 hours. You may be better off just doing it at home though if you are only going to have 3 kids. I would go there or a bounce house if I had a bigger group of kids. I agree it sounds fun.

We went to a party like that a few months ago. It was really fun, even for my son who was only about 18 months at the time. They basically sat all the kids down, explained the rules, and let them play. There were a couple of girls there that could help the kids on the different equipment. They played for an hour, then they had a room set up where we had pizza delivered and had cake. They went a little overtime in the play area, and we were supposed to have 45 min in the little room, but by the time we all served and ate pizza, then sang Happy Birthday and did cake, there was hardly any time for the little girl to open her presents. If you plan to do everything at the venue, I would get the extra half hour, just so you don't feel rushed. I don't think it sounds too expensive, especially since you won't have to decorate or spend time setting up and cleaning up.

that seems about right to me. For my daughters 6th birthday we did it at a gymnastics center and I'm pretty sure it was also $150 and they got a 1 hour class and 30 minutes for cake. Then we just came back to the house (only family) and had dinner. It was great because I didn't have to clean up or really do anything there.

That's cheap!!!! My son is turning 5 as well in a couple weeks. the last couple years we did it at an indoor kids place and spent about 500-600 for about 15-18 kids for 2 hours... Hearing 150 sounds like a steal!!!

it's a good price, but I prefer simple-at-home parties. With 9 years between our sons, we learned our lessons early! Kids can have just as much fun at home.....+ + we live in a small town with zero venues.....so we just stopped traveling anywhere other than the park for parties! The size of the party, the time of the year....all dictated the location of the party. Peace!

Personally, if I didn't have at least 10 kids, I wouldn't pay for a venue like this for the 3.5 hours for $170. I would if it was 10-12 kids.
Depends on what you want and what you can afford....
If it's 3-5 kids, why not go somewhere less expensive? Then, even if it's $12/kid somewhere else it would be cheaper.

I can't tell you what's too much. Your budget and finances are different than mine.

For my son's 5th birthday? It was at Chuck E. Cheese and we had 10 kids - I think we spent about $500 for food, beer, tokens...did we INTEND to spend that much? heck no.

Nicky's 9th birthday party was $150 - we did Laser Tag.

If you think everyone will have fun and it something you can afford - then do it. if you can't afford it - then find something else to do that doesn't cost as much.

I know some say hold it at your house - but I figured by the time you buy the food, decorations, etc. you are probably going to spend $150 there anyway...

You need to do what your budget can afford...not what someone else THINKS you should do...

GOOD LUCK!!

We have rented the gym on 2 occasions, ours is $100 for 2 hours. That gives 1-1 1/2 hours of instruction with the owner and 30 minutes to 1 hour for cake, foods, and opening gifts.

I find that all the little stuff adds up very quickly. Plates, cups, napkins, hats, all that stuff isn't free so the gym providing it is good. He sets up the tables, put the table clothes on, decorates a bit with the same colors if he has the right ones, takes down, cleans up the tables, and mops up the spills, etc...that is worth a lot in my book.

I think for a fun party that is something different than just getting together for cake and ice cream at the park this is the way to go. I don't provide any other food than cake and perhaps ice cream. It's a birthday party not a meal. I don't do goody bags either, I refuse to give kids a present for coming to a party.

Last year I was shocked at how much we spent trying to keep a budget for our child's 5th at home. So expensive! If weather allows maybe you can do a cook-out party at a local park. Kids can play on the playground and you can do some low-budget organized games. Get an artsy friend to do face painting, blow bubbles, 3-legged races, invite pets.. I mean 5 year olds go for just about anything, its about how you sell it! Maybe even a theme dress up party? Wear all your favorite color or just anything to make it fun.
Oh, actually I didn't read your question well. I am sorry. You live up north. Its still hot as hell down here in Texas. I would trade you.... ;)

This is not an excessive price for a birthday party, at a venue $15 a head is a good and typical price, and I would add on the other half hour if all it costs is $20.

Wow -that's a deal! Take it! It costs about $250-$500 to have a "location" party here in Atlanta depending on if it's a jumpy place, children's museum, aquarium or zoo. I I even think our Y charges $100 to members for a 1.5 hour pool party and you don't get any supplies. We did our 5 year old's at a bouncy place in March that cost $250 plus the food, cake and if we wanted themed plates, etc. (we did -it was a Batman party). I would do it and pay the $20 for the extra half hour!
