My family and I recently moved out of state. I am staying with family and a stomach virus has been moving through the house..great timing..I thought my 15 month old was over it after an afternoon of vomitting, but its been over a week since then and she still has loose, and VERY frequent bowels. She doesn't act sick at all besides sleeping alot, but I haven't even been able to make it through a bath without her pooping for several nights! I am wondering if I should try some binding foods? She is eating and drinking plenty. Any suggestions would be appreciated since I am in between doctors!

Hi. So my son, who is now 17 months old had a similar problems in jan/feb. He had a stomach virus then and it seemed the diarrhea never really totally went away. Then we tried transitioning him to whole milk and it came back full force. I took him to the doctor and he had said that some children become temporarily lactose intolerant after a bout of the stomach virus. I confirmed this with my sons GI doc too. It's because from all the vomiting and diarrhea, the part of the stomach that secretes the lactase enzyme is sloughed off. Unfortuneately in my sons case he remained lactose intolerant and is also gluten intolerant (and a picky eater)! But I would try her on either soy or rice milk (soy is cheaper) for a little while and see if she improves. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions and I am unfortuneately knowledgeable on the subject.

Rice or bananas are good binding foods, don't over do it by giving her too much. Otherwise she will be constipated. Continue to give her fluids to drink. The virius went through my household too. This is what the DR. told me to do.

J., you all need a probiotic, which should clear up your symptoms within 2-4 hours. Garden of Life makes a great one for adults and Jarrows makes an excellent one for children. You can buy these products at your local health food store, like whole foods. Here is a link:

Hi J.! What a nightmare! Hang in there! My little one just went through a stomach virus, so I feel your pain, especially the pooping in the bathtub thing...let's just say we have all new bath toys! Besides giving her plain yogurt with breakfast and lunch to replace the good bacteria lost in the stool, I also gave her mashed up bananas, applesauce, and baby oatmeal. I also made sure she drank plenty of water. If getting her to drink water is a problem, mix in a little white grape juice- my friend told me this helped her to get her son to drink more fluids when he was sick! Good luck!

We went through this last spring and I learned a couple of things from our doctor-
1. After an extended bout with a stomach virus many children loose the ability to process dairy for a short period of time. The body literally eliminates everything in the stomach, including the "good bacteria". We switched to all soy-based products for 2-3 weeks and it really helped.
2. Binding foods like bananas and rice work, but in moderation. Our doctor suggested adding one item to each meal to bind.
3. The "average" flu for an infant/toddler lasts a 7-10 days. It takes them longer to get better.

Good luck and keep washing your hands!

My daughter at 12 months caught a stomach bug and she got better but had intestinal problems for a long time after the whole thing. My neighbor works at day care and told me that after one of her students gets over a stomach bug it takes weeks for their digestive track to get back to normal. She was right... after 3 weeks she started to go more normally again. I would give your child bland foods in the mean time and if doesn't clear up soon I would get their stool checked.

Definitley have your child eat binding foods to help her retain some nutrients. Pediasure is what my pedi. reccomends when my don has stomach issues. Also bananas, applesauce, and I even feed him happybellies cereal with probiotics which helps alot!
