yes, thats just how she learns. Everything must be tasted to see what it is. This is totally normal...

Its totally normal! My baby (11-mo) licks everything!! When my first son (16 yo) was little he took it a little farther and started licking soap...I mentioned it to my doc and he tested him and found out he was anemic. But that is the exception to the rule...

It is normal. My almost 3 year old will still occasionllay like random things. I'm thinking he will grow out of it soon.

My 10 month old licks everything too! And by everything, I mean, his high chair, the carpet, the floors, the fridge, the walls, the side of his playpen...It doesn't make me so crazy when he does it at home, but I'm trying to get him to stop so that he doesn't do it outside of home. I keep thinking he'll outgrow it but I keep having flashbacks of a boy in my 1st grade class who used to eat crayons and lick the bottom of his shoe! That could be my son! ha! I guess, my response isn't really helpful except to tell you that you're not alone! Hope your baby is doing better now?

I have heard that excessive licking is a precursor to autism

Oh my, I remember my daughter putting everything and I mean everything in her mouth at that age, UGH! The summer she was that age she licked sand almost every other day and it didn't faze her at all.
It will pass eventually...but it feesl like an eternity!

VERY! It drives parents nuts but it is naturally how babies develop and something they need to do. Try gentle redirection to toys that you know are clean and watch her like crazy. I've seen a diagram that shows the receptors that connect to the brain. For babies most of them are in their mouths.

Call your pediatrician and go in for an indepth disucssion. You really need to add up all the things that you have been writing here that are worrying you about your baby, the failure to point, the difficulty in crowded places, the social aversion, and now this sensory issue, and get an evaluation done pronto. You need a referal to a Developmental Pediatrician, you have way too many flags to wait. The earlier you get your baby into some kind of intervention, the better off she will be. This is not typical, not the way you describe it. Children put things in their mouths, but this sound sensory seeking in a different way than exloritory and should be the last flag you need for evaluation.

Also, call ECI in your state, and have a free evaluation in your home. This is not, by a long shot, a replacement for a private medically based Developmental Evaluation, but it may happen more quickly, and can give your daughter some base therapies while she waits for the appointment with the developmentalist.

Never, never, never wait on Development. Evaluation is a win win. You either walk out the door knowing that nothing is wrong, or you find out what you need to do to help. The sooner you get that answer from someone who has spend many days, and many hours evaluating your child, the better.

Yep, common especially when teething. If you can redirect her to a clean chewy toy so much the better. If not she will probably be building up immunities that way.
