I need some help with my 15 mo. old daughter's diet. She has had very hard stools for the last couple weeks. She does poop daily but they are hard and mostly small "balls." I reduced her milk and cheese intake. She won't drink juice so I've tried giving her more water but she just sips it. What are the right foods to give her and the wrong foods? I want to help her before she starts really straining to poop. Thanks!

I found that peaches and pears helped my son, dried apricots too (never tried fresh but they might work too), and grapes. His problem was that it was hard to go and hard small balls and then he would hold it in making it even worse. His pediatrician also recommended lots of greens and he would eat spinach, a lot, if I wrapped a canteloupe ball in it and gave it to him with a toothpick. I think he just liked eating with the toothpick and his fingers though:-) Good luck.

You are correct to limit the dairy. It is safe to stop the dairy for a while. Increase the fruit and vegetables, as well as grains and beans. Use flaxseed oil in salads. Any animal products will make stools hard and increase constipation.
Keep increasing her water.
Good luck.

Reducing her milk you may have reduced her total liquid intake. Let her drink whatever she wants (not junk!) and don't let a power struggle develop over drinking water or juice if she doesn't like it. Too much undiluted juice is not that great for kids (too much sugar). Other ways to increase fluid intake is with lots of frozen popcicles -- mix half fruit juice and half water, and freeze on a stick, or get plastic molds. Also, some kids like to suck on crushed ice. Besides beverages, have lots of fruit for snackes during the day. And avoid foods that soak up internal water, like crackers, cereal, or anything dry.

Good luck!

Hi my daughter is 14 months and is the same way, her stool is very hard and she actually pushes so hard, so I have been giving her prune juice through a straw and it helps. give her a cup a day and you will see the difference. It works. Good Luck Lena
