14 Month Old with Hands in His Diaper

Help! My 14 month old is now putting his hands in his diaper constantly. He pulls and tugs on it and always sticks his hand in through the leg hole while eating or drinking a bottle. During naps and nighttime, it's a big issue because he pulls off his diaper while still wearing his clothes and throws his diaper on the ground. He then urinates all over. It's a really big issue when he has a poopy diaper! I've tried different diapers, fastening them tight, and putting layers on him. Any other ideas, tricks, advice?

What can I do next?

One piece rompers with crotch snaps. That's all my son wore at that age. Also, he needs to be taught that it's bad to mess around with this diaper. He's way too young to potty train, in my opinion. However, my kids love to go bare bottom outside in the summer. We have a fenced in back yard.

My daughter did the same thing. We took it that she was reading for underwear. We put her in underwear and everything was fine. She never had an accident and we stopped all liquids before 7:30 to make sure there were no accidents during sleep. Good Luck and try to stay patient.:-)

My daughter did the same thing. She would use her poopy diapers to finger paint if she was in her crib while I took a shower. I was washing her linen atleast every day if not twice a day. I thought she might be ready to potty train so I got all of the stuff and she was not interested. I ended up duct taping her diaper around her waste (if I did it from hip to hip she would just undo the tape and still take her diaper off). I only did it for a few days but once she got it in her head that she couldn't take her diaper off the rest just stopped. Good luck with whatever you try. It's a frustrating situation!

Try the Little Keeper Sleeper to solve this problem of taking off their diaper and clothes. I'm glad I did because this sleeper works GREAT. Their locking system and non-stretchable made sure my little Houdini could not get out and the long zipper in the back made changing a snap. This sleeper is a sanity saver. I got it from their website www.littlekeepersleeper.com

We used cloth diapers with snaps so it took us a while longer to get to the taking the diaper off stage. But my MIL had to duct tape my husbands diapers one when he was little :)

as for the touching...it is an age thing..he is at the age of noticing his body more. My 13 mo little girl is beginning the same thing. As for the pulling off of diapers...i don't know what to tell you.Maybe you should think about potty training already or duct tape the diaper on at naptime :)

hi. this may be a sign that he could be ready to start potty training. when u see him start to put his hand in his diaper, ask him if he needs to go potty. that is exactly what my daughter started doin, she will be two next month and she is almost potty trained now. my daughter used to always pull at her diaper, especially when she had a poopy diaper, and she would always end up taking the diaper off and have a mess all over the place. then i tried the potty subject. just give it a try and see how it works out. ansd good luck with everything.

I have a girl that has been disrobing from the time she was about 12 months old (she is now 2-1/2). The diaper issue is frustrating. I tape her diaper on (use duct tape, wrap it a couple times around her - she can get it off if it's only wrapped once). Now the diaper stays put. My pediatrician recommened that and it works as advertised.

As for touching himself - that is something all kids do. They are exploring and find it especially interesting because that area of the body is always under wraps (ha). Good luck!

My son was older when he started taking off his diaper and peeing in the floor, but I used that as an excuse to start potty-training. I think parents used to p-t their kids at around 18 m/o, so that's not too young. I chose spanking as the punishment for him peeing in the floor, but you may want to use a different method. If I were in your shoes and didn't think he was ready for p-t, I'd punish him for taking off his diaper. I can't think of any good tricks to keep a determined child from being able to remove his diaper; just train him that it's not acceptable.

I would say it is time to start potty training. Dont add layers, take them off. He is obviously not comfortable in his diaper any more. My Mom always said, if they are old enough to walk, they are old enough to potty train. Walk them to the bathroom!! If they have teeth, feed them real food! We, and all of my neices, nephews and cousins were raised with that thouht, and we are all VERY healthy!!! Good luck and God bless!

Try switching to pull ups and see if that helps.

Yes.. start the potty training! That's what we've done. We are about half and half now. You really have to stay on it, though. Good luck!

A friend of mine had twins that both took their diapers off and she started taping them on, it worked really well for her. She didn't tape them to the child just around the diaper. Just a thought.

Hey K.,

I've heard that you can turn the diaper around backwards so the tab is in the back. Some kids find that much harder to undo. My son went through that stage of thinking it was funny to take off his diaper...still does sometimes (hes 26 months). Honestly, I don't think it is a potty training sign. Like I said, my son went through that stage big time, but it had nothing to do with the potty for him. He was then and still is - scared to death to pee in the potty.

I absolutely agree with the onesies. That really helped us keep his diaper on. But as far as keeping his hands out of his diaper...good luck. Haha! We gave birth to boys...and they will for the rest of their life have something to explore! HAHA!
